Over my half-dozen trips to Alviso this spring it has been interesting to watch the flat just north of the Alviso. This depression fills with runoff from the winter rains and then slowly dries out as we head toward summer. The shots in this set were taken right at sunset as I walked back from the weep.

This picture is of an awkward encounter with a perfectly flat dog carcass. i had a hard time believing it was real at first, but the broken ribs, teeth along with the amount of stray dogs we saw were convincing enough. Taken in Holguin, Cuba in May 2009

The salt flats have been, and continue to be, used to record land speed records. The current record stands at a little over 622 mph.

While a slight haze starts to mask the distant Santa Monica mountains, a low low tide of -0.5 feet exposes some of the rocks and tide pools in Bluff Cove.

These rocks enable a thick forest of giant kelp gain a footing just off shore. I found several small kelp with their holdfasts attached to rocks in the intertidal zone. This west facing cove isn't quite in the lee of Catalina Island so it gets more of a pounding than the coves that are a bit farther south. The Redondo submarine canyon is just a little ways north of this cove and it traps the southward migration of sand keeping this beach in a rocky condition. I found anemone, sea hares, and chitons but none of the sea urchins or sea stars that can be found in abundance just a couple of miles south.

Flat wrack has no bladders or serrations, and is one of the wrack's which are quite tricky to identify. The fronds twist and is a useful clue. I do find them fascinating.
