Experimenting with a bright flashlight to do light painting this morning using the new Canon 6D, before sunrise, at home, at the Golden Gate, and the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, USA. I'm not impressed, could've taken these easily with a cheaper camera. I used the flashlight on the rocks in the foreground, I don't know why came out electric blue.
After a misty rain all day, I decided to take a a few late night pics of my sodden, drippy deck flowers.
After a misty rain all day, I decided to take a a few late night pics of my sodden, drippy deck flowers.
Setup:
(1) 500 watt work light left of the subject diffused through shower curtain.
(1) piece of white posterboard on the right of the subject to provide fill. Also reflected some of the red light from the light source listed below.
(1) flashlight with red filter behind and to the left of flashlight to create red accent on left side. No diffusion.
(1) flashlight behind and to the rightof flashlight to create blue accent on right side. No diffusion.
(1) black curtain to serve as background.

Thought I'd try something different. Instead of lighting the background to create separation, all of the light was placed on the subject. I'm not entirely satisfied with the result. I tried shining a third flashlight, diffused, down onto the subject to create highlights on the end of the handle, but the extra light dirtied up the foreground. When I try this setup again, I'll rig some type of reflector to do this.
It's midnight, you've done some star trails, you are waiting for the other camera to do a dark frame, why not test out that new LED light.
Bob walked in front of the camera to do some creative light painting....Who says you can't have some fun while waiting.....
3 minutes @ f4, did some extra sharpening and contrast to bring out the skies for this one. Full moon and Cleveland on the horizon made for a brilliant evening....

My third entry to the ABS Builder Challenge:

Looks like someone lost their flashlight.
The seed part is that red bucket.
The #MacroMondays theme for 5/12 is #stripes and this is the textured gripper part of the barrel of a small flashlight. And of course it’s blue and colorful!
(This one may be difficult to get a size verification on because of the curved barrel— oh, I really do need to get one of those third hand clamp gizmos!!)
I love getting rolls of film developed, when you've forgotten what might be on there. I shot this long exposure from a jetty, whilst at a party in Margate, looking out over the sea and back to the beach, and Dreamland.. Oh, and a very happy new year, when you get to it. Here's to lots of good shots in 2016, eh?!

Bangor City Forest parking area. I walked the trail to the bog's boardwalk in the dark, which was easy enough given the amount of light reflected by the snow. The flashlight was unnecessary. Upon reaching the boardwalk, where I really wanted to shoot the snowy bog landscape, I found it guarded by several gates and signs claiming recording. Unfortunate, but even the parking area yielded a few nice, moody photos.
"The Bangor City Forest, also known as the Rolland F. Perry City Forest, is a large recreation area in Bangor, Maine. The park consists of approximately 650 acres (2.6 km2) and features close to 10 miles (16 km) of hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing trails. The trail system is well maintained and most trails are packed gravel. Although primarily a recreational area, it is technically a "working forest."
The park has a large parking and picnic area located at the end of Tripp Drive. Additional parking is available at the end of Kittredge Road.
The entrance to the Orono Bog Boardwalk, a one-mile (1.6 km) boardwalk over the Orono Bog, is located on East Trail approximately 0.25 miles (0.4 km) from the parking area. The boardwalk is handicapped accessible." (Wikipedia)

This antique Eveready flashlight was among my parents' effects when they died a number of years ago. Our son kept it as a memento. He recently researched it and discovered this model (#2602) was first manufactured in 1925. A folding ring at the back end indicates the model may have been discontinued in 1929. The curved lens is quite distinct. Fitted with "C" batteries, it still works. (I included my modern watch to give an idea of scale.)
On a related note, we still have my mother's Hamilton Beach "Mixette" hand mixer which was one of my parents' wedding gifts nearly 80 years ago. It still works too. They don't make things like they used to.
Day 216 [8-3-2016]
A successful video shoot. After work, The gang got together to continue filming of our new short film. We decided to take advantage of the lights that I got for christmas last year and wow did they turn out great! With the power of the gels from ALPS, those lights gave us the perfect lighting for the shots we wanted to get! They also made for some beautiful photos. Something about the blue and orange combination makes me very happy.
I can't wait to see what the next day brings!
We started the morning on the north side of Lassen Volcanic National Park in Old Station. After a huge bowl of oatmeal at JJ's Cafe, we headed to Subway Cave nearby--a lava tube that is open to the public. Make sure you bring a flashlight and a jacket as its pitch dark and 46 degrees inside! Getting there early ensured that we had the place entirely to ourselves.
From there, we drove around the backside of the park, stopping in Westwood before we headed to the Drakesbad Guest Ranch, from where we were scheduled to go on a horseback ride. Though the original plan was to go to Terminal Geyser (a 3 hour ride), some of the guests arrived late necessitating a change in plans. Instead, we went out to Devil's Kitchen, the park's second largest display of geothermal features and only a 2 hour ride.
After the ride and the short hike down into Devil's Kitchen, we soaked in the hot springs at the Guest Ranch while hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail stocked up on their supplies.
The day ended with a fabulous pizza at Tantardino's Pizzeria in Lake Almanor Peninsula.
