I LOVE LED flashlights. Soooo much brightness in such a tiny package.
macro monday - theme: big things in small packages
Here's a pic of my lovely soldering work. Mmm, flux rosin. Smell them brain cells melting. Note the heat shrink tubing over the splice. As you can see, the tabs, the splice, and the extra bit of wire covered by the tubing sticks out quite a bit on both sides, enough that I'm going to have to cut out some more around the square hole to allow for it. I might want to cover up the exposed wires later; epoxy or Bondo or something.
I've been thinking today of drawing with a flashlight. I did about 20 shots before I got one that looks like anything.
I put the camera on "bulb" setting and remote. Turned off all the lights and used a flashlight. This is untouched.
I'm not sure what it is. I was trying to draw a boat, but it looks more like a face or a cup of java...

Elated!
I was so surprised that this came out at all, and fantastically happy that it actaully was nice. When I finished photoshoping this I could not take my eyes off it for fear that it would disappear. That how surprised I was at this!

My first attempt at a portable LED flashlight. Twist the top to turn it on, would be waterproof if I sealed the LEDs and holders with some silicone.
Still needs some work, and I need a better way to drill the holes in the lid.
And now, we'd arrived at the start of the talus caves, which is the main thing I'd always wanted to see at Pinnacles. I first learned about this around 2010 or so, when Pinnacles was still a national monument, and we watched a local access show called Motion that was briefly broadcast nationally on one of those digital antenna channels ... 7-4 or something. The premise of the show was that an extremely fit guy named Greg would go to some natural place and demonstrate to city folk how to exist outside, and we actually learned a lot from it. The show was based in California, so all the early episodes featured California places. One of those places was Pinnacles, and the biggest part of the episode was spent exploring the talus caves, and I've wanted to see them ever since.
Tomorrow: We'll go see the talus caves!
Editor's Note: This is the 1,000th picture I've posted from California. It won't show up as a thousand pictures to you, because I have all those state trooper pictures hidden, but that's what it shows to me. I'll handle that sometime in the new year.
This is the artful hand-made box I picked up from a handicrafts sale. Cost me about Rs.145. Originally designed to hold sindhoor , it is now going to be used as a box that carries auspicious rice grains. My aunt and uncle will now hand out these vermillion colored rice grains along with the wedding invite to all relatives and friends seeking their blessings for their darling daughter's successful vivaah .
I used tamaki's flashlight technique (as discussed in flickr's technique forum) for this. Only, this time I let the tube light stay on.

Even with the slack from the batteries, I still didn't want to screw it in too far, to avoid stressing the wires any more than necessary, and because I couldn't quite tell how much clearance I had between the batteries and the lump of solder and glue on the butt of the bulb. So the cap sticks out some. You can't see it very well in the side shot, so here's a better view.
