These jewels of the garden sometimes move with the sweet eloquence of a prima ballerina as they flit around the feeder extending the fluid movements of their wings. I have to liken the feisty movement of the Rufous, however, to a flash dancer as they skip in, then put on a dazzling acrobatic show to disrupt the attempts of the others to feed.

Series of test shots with some different flash techniques. Subject is a wooden drawing model back lit with halogen desk lamp mounted under my desk's hutch. All shots were white balanced for Flash. Flash had a 4 inch snoot for directional control.
Row 1: All in Program mode. First shot - no flash. Second shot - P-TTL, AF-540FGZ flash mounted on camera. Third shot - P-TTL, AF-540FGZ flash mounted on light stand camera right.
Row 2: All with camera and flash in Manual mode. Strobe is the main light. Set camera to max sync speed. Set flash to fractional power. First shot - aperture adjusted to properly light subject. Second shot - shutter speed is adjusted until the proper exposure value for the ambient light is reached. Third shot - over-exposed ambient light, but the subject remains the same except for some bleeding.
Row 3. All with camera and flash in Manual mode. Ambient light is the main light. Set camera flash sync speed. Set aperture for ambient light's exposure value. Adjust the flash output to properly light subject. First shot - no flash. Second shot - flash fired at lowest setting but too much light on subject. Third shot - flash repositioned farther away.
DIY Twin flash setup
The brolley mount bottom is holding a brolley mount sideways at top. I was using this setup with 2x 580EXIIs at full power to give me f/16 at about 2.5m.
This setup through the 42" brolley gave fairly nice even lighting for a couple against a midday sky.
Flashes were triggering with an ST-E2 on camera... which was working surprisingly well (camera was behind the flashes and the signal was still getting through).
I used this as a test until my proper double/triple flash mount came from elv000 :)
I'm still kind of amazed at how lucky I got shooting the urban bat colony during their evening feeding flight from the South Congress Ave bridge in Austin. They were flying in and out of focus at different speeds in the dark, but every now and then you could hear a cluster whoosh by and see something like this in the brief light of your flash.

There were several people taking pictures using flash. I just happened to catch one of flashes in this picture.
not the best shot in the world as it was getting dusky, but I wanted you all to see how good little Flash looks after this hard winter:-) it's so good to see the deer coming home ...
This is how far & how bright my flash extends into the night. And it forms a perfect gradient, if you squint at it.
as you can see, Flash has grown into a lovely young lady ... I'm sure all the bucks will be after her this fall ... so next year I may be taking photos of her fawn ... which means I may never get to move from here ... *sigh*
He's still at it, I think I'll have to relocate him in the morning before he demolishes all the flowers.
Well theres nothing flashy about this knackered silent duffer with broken tones lol but clearly the driver likes to put his reg plate on show! Unsure about that headboard too but its a bit big to edit out.
Either way it will be the last time anyone see's her doing out this weekend before withdrawal so i managed one pic of it here quietly drifting past at Townsend Fold.

What we have here is your basic Vivitar 285HV flash, connected with a Vivitar to 1/8'' cable, connected to a 1/8'' to USB mini cable, connected to your basic Motorola SLVR L7 cell phone (hanging from the flash by an extra Pocket Wizard lanyard).
Think of the range you get with this thing, people! Providing you have a good long distance plan, you can fire the 285HV from anywhere on the planet :)
Technical--though it's just a joke:
Vivitar 285HV set to 1/16, fired through a 33'' umbrella behind me and to my left.
Canon EOS-1D, Tokina 10-17mm fisheye @ 12mm, f/4, 1/10th second exposure, ISO 320.
If the Strobist.com Group people feel this is completely unfunny, please feel free to remove from the pool.
