A Cuban brown male anole is showing his orange-red dewlap…a common feature of lizards and anoles which is used for several reasons…
1) to make itself look bigger and warn off predators.
2) to impress the ladies during the mating season.
seen here in the grounds of The Melia Jardines Del Rey Hotel, Cayo Coco, Cuba.
These jewels of the garden sometimes move with the sweet eloquence of a prima ballerina as they flit around the feeder extending the fluid movements of their wings. I have to liken the feisty movement of the Rufous, however, to a flash dancer as they skip in, then put on a dazzling acrobatic show to disrupt the attempts of the others to feed.
Series of test shots with some different flash techniques. Subject is a wooden drawing model back lit with halogen desk lamp mounted under my desk's hutch. All shots were white balanced for Flash. Flash had a 4 inch snoot for directional control.
Row 1: All in Program mode. First shot - no flash. Second shot - P-TTL, AF-540FGZ flash mounted on camera. Third shot - P-TTL, AF-540FGZ flash mounted on light stand camera right.
Row 2: All with camera and flash in Manual mode. Strobe is the main light. Set camera to max sync speed. Set flash to fractional power. First shot - aperture adjusted to properly light subject. Second shot - shutter speed is adjusted until the proper exposure value for the ambient light is reached. Third shot - over-exposed ambient light, but the subject remains the same except for some bleeding.
Row 3. All with camera and flash in Manual mode. Ambient light is the main light. Set camera flash sync speed. Set aperture for ambient light's exposure value. Adjust the flash output to properly light subject. First shot - no flash. Second shot - flash fired at lowest setting but too much light on subject. Third shot - flash repositioned farther away.
In China the New Year is not calculated as the shortest day as in the Western Calendar. The Chinese calendar works on the lunar cycle. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between the 21st of January and 20th of February. In 2018, the first day of the Lunar New Year was on Friday, 16 February, initiating the year of the Dog.

This is how far & how bright my flash extends into the night. And it forms a perfect gradient, if you squint at it.
not the best shot in the world as it was getting dusky, but I wanted you all to see how good little Flash looks after this hard winter:-) it's so good to see the deer coming home ...
He's still at it, I think I'll have to relocate him in the morning before he demolishes all the flowers.

DIY Home-made ring flash.
There are many instructions to make one of these to be found on the internet and on flickr.
I sugest you google " DIY ring flash" and look at all the ideas.
I decided to make one - I think my idea to use a plastic bowl gives a quick and neat end product.
This is still a work in progress - I must still buy the TTL cable and make the bracket to hold the camera/bowl/flash together as a unit. Finished product will follow.
1X 20cm(8") translucent plastic tupperware-type bowl cost R17.00 ($2.50) (includes lid)
1X piece 1mm ductile aluminium for cone
1X piece 100mm (4") plastic drainage pipe
1X roll aluminium tape cost R24.00 ($3.00) (any automotive shop)
1X idea on how to make cone
1. Cut bowl and lid to suit pipe used ( I used a pair of dividers - worked like a dream)
2. Make cone to suit pipe and bowl size
3. Trace paper template for head of flash.
4. Hold flash against bowl, decide where the hole for head will be and stick template onto bowl with craft glue.
5. Cut out hole for flash (I used the small blade on a swiss-army knife and trimmed and cleaned up the fit with a soldering iron).
6.Cover inside of bowl, pipe and cone with aluminium tape . . work slowly, small piece at a time.

the successor of Franke & Heidecke, has announced an update of the Rolleiflex Hy6 for Photokina 2012. The new Rolleiflex Hy6 Mod2 appears to have a new grip, reinforced tripod plate, and a redesigned "transmission" to reduce the impact of mirror movement. There will also be new firmware, with autofocus adjustment for more lenses.

showing to utility of a high flash sync to overpower daylight. The exposure is done for the outside, 1/250s+f/16, upper left. With the same exposure, a SB-600 at full power on camera with give the lower left result.
With a lower sync speed, 1/125 and corresponding f/22 aperture to keep the same exterior exposure, you get the lower right photo. With a higher 1/1000s sync and f/8, you get the upper right photo.
