as you can see, Flash has grown into a lovely young lady ... I'm sure all the bucks will be after her this fall ... so next year I may be taking photos of her fawn ... which means I may never get to move from here ... *sigh*
DIY Twin flash setup
The brolley mount bottom is holding a brolley mount sideways at top. I was using this setup with 2x 580EXIIs at full power to give me f/16 at about 2.5m.
This setup through the 42" brolley gave fairly nice even lighting for a couple against a midday sky.
Flashes were triggering with an ST-E2 on camera... which was working surprisingly well (camera was behind the flashes and the signal was still getting through).
I used this as a test until my proper double/triple flash mount came from elv000 :)

This is how far & how bright my flash extends into the night. And it forms a perfect gradient, if you squint at it.

What we have here is your basic Vivitar 285HV flash, connected with a Vivitar to 1/8'' cable, connected to a 1/8'' to USB mini cable, connected to your basic Motorola SLVR L7 cell phone (hanging from the flash by an extra Pocket Wizard lanyard).
Think of the range you get with this thing, people! Providing you have a good long distance plan, you can fire the 285HV from anywhere on the planet :)
Technical--though it's just a joke:
Vivitar 285HV set to 1/16, fired through a 33'' umbrella behind me and to my left.
Canon EOS-1D, Tokina 10-17mm fisheye @ 12mm, f/4, 1/10th second exposure, ISO 320.

SB600 Flash with Omni-Bounce
Great design by Lindberg & Sons.
Always tricky shooting reflective materials while using flash. The flash here is on-camera bounce flash set to manual and 1/8 of full power. Exposure compensation set to -1.
The Nitro Flash is a JDA weapon designed to have a ridiculous rate of fire and look all badass and have no recoil and hey, it's fucking gold.
--Special thanks to Durruti, looking at his various gold guns inspired me to make my second gold gun. (MNC TAS .50 was first) .06 gold TAKIN' OVER!
I just kinda came up w/ this last minute, and it worked pretty well, so long as the umbrella stand wasn't getting knocked over by wind :P
If you use pocketwizards, but don't have enough, you can put the PW on only one flash, and put the other in SU-4 mode, and you'll still get both to fire!
Used for these set ups:
I took part in the Manchester Weekender 2012 presents All in a Flash - a one day photography exhibition on the 14th october 2012.
Under the guidance of Len Grant, we tried to capture the characters of the Manchester Northern Quarter.
My theme was people at work within the Northern Quarter.
After taking photographs for a couple of hours, we each had a single shot printed out and took part in an exhibition flashmob - best described as a guerilla gallery.
Unfortunately only one shot was printed, so this gallery is an opportunity to say thank you to some of the other people that were kind enough to let me take their photograph.
** October 2010: This rig is very outdated but remains to show the progression of my setups through my Camera Gear set. You can view my most current and often-used setup here.**
Flash on, next picture is flash off.
Flash diffuser mounted (with tape, for now...I spent a long time making an elaborate wire support, and it didn't work out. Oh well.) Looks rough, works great. I actually have to diffuse it further with paper for many subjects, it is so bright.
Can also see my rig with the kit lens (18-55) mounted in reverse in front of my 60mm macro with a 62-52mm step-down ring and a 52mm male-male reversing ring. I have to hold the aperture on the front lens open manually; ten staples happen to be the perfect size to do so (older SLR lenses had a ring, which made it much easier).
It's a crappy shot, just uploaded for the tech aspect. Sorry for the poor quality, taken with old point-and-shoot.
While trying to come up with an idea for the Nikon D80 Challenge for Image Overlay I was drawing a blank until I decided to give this a try.
The actual photo of me I used my D80 mounted on a tripod and a camera mounted SB600 Speedlight bounced off the ceiling. The photo of the monitor was also taken using my tripod and a 10 second exposure at f10.
I combined the two separate RAW images in my D80 using the Image Overlay feature to create this one image. I used Photoshop CS3 Extended to clean it up and come up with the finished product.
For a first time attempt, I wasn't too disappointed with the result. I had to start somewhere.
For what it's worth...it made it to Explore.

For this weeks Never Professional group challenge 'Graffiti'.
I finally managed to get out and take some new pictures for a challenge!
I've taken pictures of graffiti before and so this time I wanted to do something different which led me to have a go with some off camera flash.
I wanted to add some urban grit style as well as bring out the textures. I'm really pleased with how these first attempts came out, shot without flash the scene looked nothing like this.
It's not the best example of artistic graffiti, unfortunately the bridge I was heading for had been painted over!
