Badly flaking paint on an external wall. So much paint has flaked off that the remaining flakes look like brown butterflies about to lift off from the surface.

We had a heavy frost in early December -- many of the leaves were still hanging around which made for some nice subjects. I probably spent too much time on too many leaves instead of focusing on the really cool ones, but this was one of my favorites...it was a beautiful morning.

We happened to be out walking along Paradise Pond when the earliest snow flakes from Saturday's Winter storm began to fly. Temperatures were down in the 20s so the snowflakes were compact little balls of ice. These are delicate little clematis vine seeds, on the botanic garden fence, with some of those first, tiny flakes on them.

Big wet flakes were falling this morning, but by late afternoon it was gone. Now it's all rain (again).

A few feathery flakes are scattered widely through the air, and hover downward with uncertain flight, now almost alighting on the earth, now whirled again aloft into remote regions of the atmosphere. (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1804 - 1864. American novelist, Dark Romantic, and short story writer).

Good luck to everyone in the southern US getting hit with snow and ice. When you don't have the warm clothes or snow clearing equipment or snow tires, snow does not always hold such beauty for you. we are having another snow day here in Halifax..third one on a Wednesday (which is my day off anyway...darn )
