Most days, the guys have to concentrate their efforts on bringing home the bacon doing oil changes, brakes, batteries, and making road side service calls.
One of these days, they'll get around to turning this beater back into a classic.

Just a few blocks from one of those "WE BUY UGLY HOUSES" billboards with the caveman.
It might need a roof (OK, it NEEDS a roof!) and a few interior appointments like furniture and plumbing but the landscaping is fine as-is and the location... well, the location is superb!

Fall Break 2014: "Turtles & Lava"
October 27: Big Island west side: time to look for the turtle.
Have you ever lost files? I've done it once or twice, it always sucks. this was one of about 35 images that I thought I lost. My friend Scott and I stumbled on this place before one of our Packard expeditions., had a lot of rusted out beauties.
"Lovely home, historical architecture, secluded lot, needs TLC, priced to sell....oh, don't believe those silly stories you hear about noises coming from inside the house! No one's lived here for years!"
Although now faded and weathered, this once fine house may have been a duplex or was reconfigured as one after it was built. Given the design, the fine stone work, and different materials cladding the walls, it is surely an architect designed house. The original porch is sadly missing but its loss seems more recent so perhaps older photos exist showing what it once looked like. A look at "before & after" photos of other since restored houses in the District suggest this house has promise. The challenge is to find someone willing to take on this house and bring it back to its original appearance. Preservation opportunities are abundant in Muncie with bargain prices to match for fixer-uppers.
We loved wandering Scarborough, Tobago. That's the little island north of Trinidad in the Caribbean Sea.
This tiny island is 26 miles long and 6 miles wide, so it's easy to explore in a day.
It's so rich with history; Columbus discovered it in 1498.
The island has terrific veiws, a gorgeous rainforest full of colorful birds, and lots of architectural eye-candy like this decrepit vine-overgrown building just up from the docks.
Tobago is worth a stop, and cabbies cost only $25/hour.
Group: Macro Mondays
Theme: Meaningful Holiday Ornaments
These ornaments were not obtained for their beauty, obviously. But they, to this date, represent the two homes I’ve purchased to date. Both homes were not purchased for the aesthetic beauty or curb appeal, but rather for their unseen potential.
Both my first home and current home were the most tattered, left-to-ruin homes in their respective blocks. But, at the time, both were all I could afford. So after two years of endless work, sacrificed weekends, sleepless nights, dust-filled environments and an insurmountable amount of sweat, creativity, paint and money, of course, they each came to regain their intended beauty.
So, here’s to home, and to sacrifice and promise.
(I will catch up with everyone this evening)
On my trek to Jamestown, Boulder County to carry the big camera to snag some shots, I got sidelined over at old town somehow and found this old house that was apparently too dilapidated to yuppify. Maybe it is tied up in litigation; that is one of the best preservation schemes in this country. I was on my way over to the "Elysian Park" for some reason. Maybe I thought I could capture something old; here it is. I can imagine that the upstairs is a bit drafty. If this place came on the market, it would be snapped up immediately.
I can relate that this is one fantastic spot to abide the summers and the winters. Residents claim the town is a banana boat; there is a big hill to the west. It is in the Rockies and that relieves the summers with cooling evenings. It is 10 degrees cooler than Frogmont right now. This is also a shot that was a real job to retain the sky and pull back the shadows properly. I created a mask for the sky. This was a balancing act!
James Creek has a big spot in my heart. Probably for my fly fishing "up the creek." Now those episodes will not come to light except in person! I think that because the flat spot across the stream consists of mill tailings, I would put trout back, below and above here on the river The stream will lead me to some venues on a day when t-storms were slowly building. This spot is on the hill above the creek, There is one tree remaining on the hiil, left from a recent serious fire. Jamestown was an early mountain town started just after the gold rush. I wanted to look for possible scenes I have yet to discover. I opted for this scene under the coming overcast. I hoped the sky would present possibilities later. I knew I'd have some work to try to contain the range so I extracted three layers. I wandered up the creek and took some detail shots that were available,
X = Marked for destruction.
Just one of hundreds of homes in South Shore and the East Side of Chicago: whole neighborhoods that are threatened with eradication.
I had not been out this way for more than 20 years, but today I retraced my old route home from work, when I used to work the Jets at Cabrini-Green once a week. I'd get off at 2:30 in the morning and I'd fly down Lake Shore Drive, good old LSD, all the way down.
It ceases to be the grand boulevard by the time you emerge from Jackson Park. Reduced simply to Route 41, it becomes a winding road, hugged ever tighter by the buildings on either side.
Even twenty odd years ago, South Shore and the East Side were already past their prime. The big steel mills had begun to close by the late 70's, and the smokestack industries that depended on them for steel, followed suit over the years. No steel meant no iron ore ships docking in Calumet Harbor, or, the Port of Chicago, as they used to call it.
Now, the only industry I can find with a pulse, is the Ford plant at 130th Street. Everything else is either dead or comatose. No more plants,no more jobs, so it should not come as a surprise that people are losing their homes, but the sheer magnitude of the devastation still stings.
Not all of this blight can be blamed on the changing economy, the off-shoring of jobs, Wall Street greed, or cutbacks in government programs. Some of these people packed their bags because of crime. Route 41 is but a few blocks from the epicenter of the gang wars that are ravaging large swaths of our city. Poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and an abundance of guns,it is a perfect storm that has swept through here.
The 8700 Block of Mackinaw - still part of Route 41 - is now without human habitation. Every home on this block has either been torn down, or is sitting vacant: foreclosed, condemned, abandoned, boarded up, and left to the elements.
Even squatters will pass these babies up for something better...
Built in the 1870's, fairly early for Brush Park, this house is one of the few left on Alfred Street. Recently it was used as a movie set and is now for sale:

From this angle it looks a bit clunky, from the side that is now open, it's quite beautiful.

Monrovia is a small unincorporated area located in southeastern Frederick County, Maryland. The site is along the original B&O railroad. Why would nobody live in an ghost town so close to the city of Baltimore, Washington DC ?
Another commercial addition in Sacramento on the 3000 block of J Street. This one is in a state of disrepair. Perhaps only the facade exists, with the rest of the addition at least partial dismantled, but I could not get a look inside to confirm.
As I was taking my Flickr contacts on a quick trip around the Cork Harbour area, we stopped off at the ruins of this medieval castle (Belvelly Castle - for sale!), located on the road between Cobh and Cork city.
The four walls are still standing, which I guess is a bonus after 800 years, but there's a little bit of work to be done before you could call it home!
I just had a quick look around on the web and those with a spare €200,000 and a lot of time and patience (not to mention a million or two in restoration costs), can contact the auctioneers here!

I see a structure like this and I wonder "Where did they go, the people who owned this?" Did they have a rough patch of luck and ran our of money to keep it up. Did they die? One will never know. My second inclination is to grab my tool box and bring this little cabin back to life.

This photo shows only about 2/3 of the front facade of the Fitzgerald house, a designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument built in 1903. Despite its state of disrepair, it's listed for sale for $1.9 million, no doubt partly due to its being on a triple lot.

Last weekend I found this stripped and dicarded mountain bike. I've already added items to my liking. It had no brakes or shifters and was in pretty bad shape. It looked like someone had stollen all the parts off it and left the remains. I don't know what brand it is but it does feel light, even with the steel hubs, so I'm suspecting it's a bike of some quality with chromemoly tubes.
