For us it was quite a moment because we were getting close to the finishing line of the Moray Coast Trail.
We had started in November 2022 and here we were completing it in May 2024. The total we walked over five different Saturdays was about 58 miles.

The "Five Sisters", as these beautiful old Victorian houses are known as in Syracuse, New York, were once abandoned and inhabitable.
Now, the lovely exteriors have been restored to their former glory with modernized interiors, in an extensive renovation project to help rejuvenate the Park Avenue neighborhood of Syracuse's west side.
The selling price on these spacious Victorian homes is between $180,000 to $265,000 and their new owners receive perks for buying a home in an economically depressed neighborhood, in the hopes of rebuilding and revitalizing the area.
The homes are part of the city's tax exemption program, whereby the owners have their property assessments frozen between $15,000 and $20,000 a year for seven years. Owners will also receive a $5,250 grant toward the purchase price once they have lived in the house for a year.

Another from my walk around the farmers fields just outside Much Wenlock on New Years day. I think that this is my current favorite of the recent uploads. Lots of work in photoshop to lighten the scene and bring out the lines in the crop field as well as the removal of a tree which I felt spoilt the overall scene. Back to an almost monochromatic feel too.

With the G Tug Massachusetts assisting on the point, the CSL Assiniboine squeezes through the narrow area known as the "Five Bridges". The hulk on the right is the remant of the B&O bridge that was struck by an ocean vessel in 1988.

A delicious taco. A nice moist tortilla, some wonderful al pastor, a nice sprinkling of cilantro. A good coating of habanero sauce.
Now to set it on the table, and...
OOPS!
Pick it up quick!
The floor is clean. I just washed it last week. It should still be good...
rats.
Good thing I have enough to make another one.
Gelsenkirchen
The Ruhr area ('Ruhrgebiet') is named after the river that borders it to the south and is the largest urban area in Germany with over five million people. It is mostly known as a densely-populated industrial area. By 1850 there were almost 300 coal mines in operation in the Ruhr area. The coal was exported or processed in coking ovens into coke, used in blast furnaces, producing iron and steel. Because of the industrial significance, it had been a target from the start of the war, yet "the organized defences and the large amount of industrial pollutants produced a semi-permanent smog or industrial haze that hampered accurate bombing". During World War II, the industry and cities in the Ruhr area were heavily bombed. The combination of the lack of historic city centres, which were burned to ashes, and (air) pollution has given the area and the cities a bad reputation. Especially because it is so close to the Netherlands, I thought it would be an interesting area to visit for a little trip. I have spent three nights at a campsite on the Ruhr and visited six cities.
Gelsenkirchen is the 25th largest city in Germany and the fourth largest in the Ruhr region with a population of 260,000. Gelsenkirchen remained a small settlement until the nineteenth century, when the industrial revolution led to a rapid population increase. It became an independent city in 1896. The city used to have many torches due to the excess of coke oven gas from the coking plants, which gave Gelsenkirchen its nickname Stadt der 1000 Feuer (City of 1000 Fires). Gelsenkirchen is primarily known for its soccer club: Schalke 04, which is named after the Gelsenkirchener district Schalke.
Gelsenkirchen suffers from problems including high unemployment due to its former reliance on the coal and steel industry, high crime rates and a large amount of vacant houses caused by population decline. The population reached an all-time high in 1959 with 391,745 inhabitants; the forecast for 2025 lies at only 226,100 inhabitants, making it one of the fastest shrinking cities in Germany. Gelsenkirchen now tries to turn around things by expanding its service sector and positioning itself as a hub for solar technology.
Even though 75% of the city was destroyed during World War II, there are still plenty of remains of the architectural past.

Five-Lined Skinks are common in NJ where I live. I loved the pose this adult male struck for me. The orangey head color denotes breeding time. They are easy to spook and this one seemed to be oblivious to my presence.
A sweet text yesterday from Rich.
Austin coming home and asking if I would paint with him tomorrow. They are studying the 50's and he wants us each to do a Jackson Pollock.
Seeing Courtney, Abbie's old tutor who moved back to WA but is spending part of her spring break back here.
Walking outside last night to see our home against the blue hour
Waking up to another day, although not smooth I went to bed telling Rich I would rather have a rough morning with the kids then to think of them being grown and gone.
Our oldest is having a rough time still and this was assigned for him. I told him I would join him, it will do me some good too. We have a strong faith, we have each other and I know it will be okay it's just rough seeing this amazing young man working through it. He will be stronger for it I'm sure of that.
Golden light of the setting sun...
We still have about 100 American White Pelicans hanging around our city's lakeshore, to the delight of everyone.
City residents are 'flocking' to Lakeshore Drive, parking, and taking in the beauty of these big birds. Here's hoping they stay all summer!
