Another from my walk around the farmers fields just outside Much Wenlock on New Years day. I think that this is my current favorite of the recent uploads. Lots of work in photoshop to lighten the scene and bring out the lines in the crop field as well as the removal of a tree which I felt spoilt the overall scene. Back to an almost monochromatic feel too.

This morning, here are five observations from yesterday's walk in the park. I walked down the bank of the lake to get a better view of this tree. Luckily, a young man was there fishing. I thought he completed the scene.

The burger place had not opened yet for the day: it is still in business. The strip joint had one of the most notorious neons in Montreal, but also one of the best. I was there to photograph the Super Sexe neon which was dark because the club had failed after a 50 year run.

I posted the unlit neon sign previously, so today a link (below) to Lisa T.'s lit neon shows it in all its glory . I hope that the sign is saved for a neon museum if the place does not reopen.

I photographed this neat little Chevrolet five-window pickup truck parked at a residence just off of Highway 13 on the north side of Wisconsin Rapids during a September 2024 visit to the area. –

I had also seen it in previous years, but for whatever reason didn’t have a chance to get a decent shot then, but glad I did this time because you never know when these vintage gems will disappear, and eventually they all do. –

After having the same basic styling on their pickups from 1948 through 1953, Chevrolet made only subtle external changes for 1954, mainly the one-piece windshield and a restyled grille. –

One interesting bit of trivia when it comes to Chevy pickups of the 1950s is that this 1954 style had to be extended for a few months into the 1955 model year (then referred to as “First Series”) until the anticipated and completely re-designed 1955s were finally introduced in March of that year (and referred to as “Second Series”), so first series 55s are comparatively rare. –

I can’t tell for sure from this photo if this is a 54’ or a First Series 55’ – but of course the odds are that it is the more common 1954 Chevy, which would have rolled off of the GM assembly line in much larger numbers. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

A delicious taco. A nice moist tortilla, some wonderful al pastor, a nice sprinkling of cilantro. A good coating of habanero sauce.

Now to set it on the table, and...

OOPS!

Pick it up quick!

The floor is clean. I just washed it last week. It should still be good...

Good thing I have enough to make another one.

Gelsenkirchen

The Ruhr area ('Ruhrgebiet') is named after the river that borders it to the south and is the largest urban area in Germany with over five million people. It is mostly known as a densely-populated industrial area. By 1850 there were almost 300 coal mines in operation in the Ruhr area. The coal was exported or processed in coking ovens into coke, used in blast furnaces, producing iron and steel. Because of the industrial significance, it had been a target from the start of the war, yet "the organized defences and the large amount of industrial pollutants produced a semi-permanent smog or industrial haze that hampered accurate bombing". During World War II, the industry and cities in the Ruhr area were heavily bombed. The combination of the lack of historic city centres, which were burned to ashes, and (air) pollution has given the area and the cities a bad reputation. Especially because it is so close to the Netherlands, I thought it would be an interesting area to visit for a little trip. I have spent three nights at a campsite on the Ruhr and visited six cities.

Gelsenkirchen is the 25th largest city in Germany and the fourth largest in the Ruhr region with a population of 260,000. Gelsenkirchen remained a small settlement until the nineteenth century, when the industrial revolution led to a rapid population increase. It became an independent city in 1896. The city used to have many torches due to the excess of coke oven gas from the coking plants, which gave Gelsenkirchen its nickname Stadt der 1000 Feuer (City of 1000 Fires). Gelsenkirchen is primarily known for its soccer club: Schalke 04, which is named after the Gelsenkirchener district Schalke.

Gelsenkirchen suffers from problems including high unemployment due to its former reliance on the coal and steel industry, high crime rates and a large amount of vacant houses caused by population decline. The population reached an all-time high in 1959 with 391,745 inhabitants; the forecast for 2025 lies at only 226,100 inhabitants, making it one of the fastest shrinking cities in Germany. Gelsenkirchen now tries to turn around things by expanding its service sector and positioning itself as a hub for solar technology.

Even though 75% of the city was destroyed during World War II, there are still plenty of remains of the architectural past.

We still have about 100 American White Pelicans hanging around our city's lakeshore, to the delight of everyone.

City residents are 'flocking' to Lakeshore Drive, parking, and taking in the beauty of these big birds. Here's hoping they stay all summer!

I was in the middle of installing a dryer vent in the rain, when the sun suddenly appeared. My first thought: Rainbow! Sure enough, there was a huge one. But my neighborhood isn't really good composition with a rainbow, so I hopped in the car and raced downtown.

The rainbow disappeared just as I was parking. :(

So I shot this instead. I kind of feel like I'm in that HDR hole:

Processing:

18 photos total (6 positions, 3 exposures each). Imported into Lightroom to remove vignette and lens distortion. Exported to Photomatix for HDR processing (Painterly preset with natural light). Merged all the HDRs in Photoshop into the panorama and added a high pass filter (with hard light blending) for a little sharpness. Imported back into LR3 and added vignette.

'Take Five' is a term, used often in the entertainment industry, to tell someone to stop working and relax for a short period of time. This photo was taken during a 'take five' break at an outdoor jazz session in Filoli Gardens, Woodside, California. During the break, a slight breeze had blown the sheet music off its stand.

I've used 'selective color' in this photograph. Its a post-processing technique where most of the photo is converted to black and white, but one object is left in color. This is achieved by using layers and masks in photo editing software like Adobe's 'Photoshop". Black and white photography can give very powerful meaning to a photo, but sometimes a bit of color makes it outstanding. The selective color technique emphasizes parts of the photo and draws more attention to the subject....the subject in this case being 'taking a break'.....and, represented by the colored towel.

Y'all remember Anna?

This is 6 images shot at f/1.2. The focal point is Anna's Face. I took the surrounding shots of Anna before I focused on her expression/form. With that process, I was able to pick the best shot of Anna and insert her into the frame. Bingo Bango Bongo. Check it out larger here.
