Aerial sunrise at the beach with colourful high cloud at Umina Point, Umina Beach on the Central Coast, NSW, Australia.

This is a 16x9 crop of the previous image (on the right) of Mount Katahdin in northern Maine. It was taken from Abol Bridge during sunrise on March 25. This appears to be a good crop for this image. (image M1A7737-16x9) Please also visit: acadiamagic.com.

On some mornings the first light does turn the mountains a purple shade for a few brief seconds...and I was fortunate to be there when it happened last month.

The absolutely best advice I've ever read about photography was fairly succinct:

"If you want to get better at photography, stand in front of better things"

I've never forgotten that tidbit.

And now you now why I return to Jackson Hole year after year.

Boulders and forest reflected in the quiet water of a Yosemite National Park backcountry lake.

This photograph takes me back to 2014, when a group of us spent a week in the Yosemite backcountry. We first visited this lovely lake set in a forested bowl not far from the edge of a big canyon, in an area with lots of beautiful granite slabs, a nearby overlook, and early autumn meadows. We left this spot after a few days and set up another base camp halfway back to our trailhead.

The lake is not a large one, and almost every morning or evening wander along its banks ended up being a circumnavigation. One shoreline was mostly forested, another was dotted with granite boulders, and a smaller area near the outlet stream was more open and flat. I photographed this scene one early morning just before the light of the rising sun managed to angle down to the shoreline.

Expected longingly, the sun brings back warmth and friendliness after a bivouac night out in the mountains...

Llynnau Mymbyr in a shroud of mist being burnt off by the sun with the early signs of Autumn colour.

Woke up this morning and made my way down to Llynnau Mymbyr for sunrise. Very cold start at just 1 degree but the sun soon rose high enough to begin burning the mist off.

I'd missed it the day before trying to get a shot of the rowing boats at Llyn Nantle which must've been the only lake that wasn't covered in mist. The farmer has put a new sign on the gate and some freshly installed barb wire.

I was just about to leave when a young girl said there is a hole in the wall further up and to follow her. Turns out she was actually 23 and worked as a stroke nurse at Bangor Hospital. On her days off she jumps in her car and goes off exploring, parks up and just walks, often covering 20+ miles each day and wild camps. Her rucksack was bigger than her and I made us a coffee and put the world to rights for an hour or so.

Topics covered included social media and mental health and the pressures of displaying a person who isn't really who you are, Instagram especially and the toxic cesspit of Twitter, the snowflake generation, Covid in the community, cultural differences of various ethnic groups, how we can't function until the first coffee of the day and whether Joe Root is too nice to be England cricket captain. The BBC, the right to roam and whether Jetboils are over priced for what the are.

I usually avoid speaking to anyone when out and about but of late I've found the company a pleasant distraction. If she is what the snowflake generation are like we are in safe hands.

Another season incoming!

Life is not waiting for you anywhere, now is happening.

Not in the future as you have a goal to reach, is here and now, at this very moment, in your breathing, your blood circulation in the beating of your heart.

Whatever you are is your life and if you start looking elsewhere meaning you will miss.

Looking across Malham at sunrise. It had just stopped raining and there was lots of mist at low level.

Looking through my archives I realized we've been to this spot three times and never posted a shot....so here's my take on the iconic Turret Arch seen through South Window in Arches National Park.

The glorious dawn was greeted by the rapturous choir of birdsong, hundreds of avian voices filling the morning air.

First Light In The Glen

Glen Coe again and our trip last week with stunning conditions to work with.

This is just after sunrise with the light hitting Stob Mhic Mhartuin to the right. I was actually waiting for the light to hit the tip of Buachaille Etive Mor, but I couldn't resist making this image too.

Thought I wasn't going to get a sunrise this morning, but one did peep through the clouds.

This is a lot like an earlier post but actually is a slightly different composition. It was taken after the first snow storm of the season while next to Lake Wassookeag in Central Maine. (image M1A6461) Please also visit: acadiamagic.com.

This was taken at 6:47 this morning, it was a real shock to see it only half way across the sky.

First light in Iqaluit is a threshold — a spectrum of beginnings refracted across horizon and memory. Each dawn bends possibility into choice, reminding us that resilience is not singular but renewed daily, a ritual of orientation at the edge of the Arctic.

Scattered offshore clouds on the horizon and at altitude punctuate the impending sunrise captured from the surf club rocks.

Vorig jaar één van de weinige echte winterse ochtenden. Maar dit jaar lijkt het vooralsnog helemáál nergens op. Hopelijk brengt februari nog iets moois...

Last year this was one out of a few good winter mornings. But this year, so far, we had absolutely none! I hope February will bring some cold winter weather...

Thanks for having a look! All faves and comments are highly appreciated!

First light as the morning sun sweeps down onto our beautiful town. Wirksworth awash with swirling smoking chimney tops, what an absolutely amazing place to live.

Doing Cityscape photography during Christmas Days is both a blessing and a curse. The good: You find a lot of beautiful Christmas decorations that give a lovely and unique touch to the images. The bad: Big town squares are often inaccessible due to temporary Christmas markets. Both had been the case at the Old City Hall in Leipzig.

My favorite "sunrise in paradise" location on Key West. These palms are featured on Jimmy Buffett's A1A album, and the back cover is about 50 yards north of here. While he lived here this was a favorite spot of his and he wrote a few songs here. Have been attempting to get the best shot of these palms for many years. I'M STILL TRYING!

Two little fox siblings play with a piece of... something... at one of the entrances to their den. All three kits were present when we arrived just before 5:30 a.m., while mama fox kept an eye on us from tall grasses in the middle of a field.

Once again the rolling red Toyota blind proved its worth, as the foxes paid scant attention while I shot stills from the front seat and George rolled video from the back. We kept our visit brief; my RAW data confirms that we stayed only five minutes. During that interval I shot 200 frames; meanwhile the light changed from soft to contrasty as the sun rose.
