It is always a treat to witness the first rays of the morning sun kiss the mountain peaks at Glacier National Park.

After heading to the local park in search of the Great White Egret, I came across this fella. While not as large as their cousins, this Green Heron was actually one of beefiest I've see for a long while. With the help of some cattails, I was able to get pretty close while he was busy preening himself. It's amazing how much they can extend themselves as usually they just look like a football when sitting still. What a beautiful bird, enjoy!

Shortly after sunrise I spotted this Coyote patrolling a prairie dog town. Prairie dogs are notoriously late risers, and on cold winter days they remain in a state of torpidity, deep underground in their dens. But the days are warming. This morning it was -5C when I left home, but warmed to +9C by early afternoon. Very little snow remains, not that we had much this winter.

Coyote knew that eventually there would be rodent action, and therefore found a shady spot to curl up, take a nap, and wait inconspicuously for a chance at a meal. The prairie dogs would be up in due time, hungry, foraging for something to eat (nothing is growing yet, but they will dig up various plant roots). It's always about a meal. Coyote looked healthy; he has been eating regularly.

I had some homemade crackers, a bag of mixed nuts, and a bottle of water in my car; no hunger, no worries. I drove on to see what else might be happening in the park, now that winter's on the run.

I spent a couple of days in Miami espcially to photograph these colorful lifeguard towers along Miami Beach. Each one is different in color and shape. Photos available for purchase at Wits End Photography. Follow my blog Traveling at Wits End for ways to create travel adventures everyday.

Happy Sliders Sunday to all flickr friends, HSS

I walk along the glassy water, my breath fogging around me.

Seasons are changing, just as my life is changing.

Wisps of the night’s chill still clinging to the banks, like memories of the day before.

Suddenly, it happens; the world seems to stop.

Everything’s calm, and clear, and beautiful.

The rosy touch of a fresh, new day is dawning, and with it, new beginnings.

Grebe chick just hatched and sees the light of day !

So fortunate to watch a grebe chick hatch from the first egg crack and see the nervous parents' celebratory activities was really cute too.

Made my day '-)

Note; double zoom to see it's wet face !

Sunrises have been epic lately. Having an early morning job helps makes it easier to wake up at 2:45am and be on time for first light.

.-.-.-.-.

I leave Cantal for a photo, taken on the heights of the village of Najac, in Aveyron, an hour's drive from Albi, to wish you a beautiful year 2025 filled with photos, colors and emotions.

This photo is maybe not exceptional but in my eyes it is for having shared this moment with my mother.

The intensity of the fiery sun as it peers above the horizon brings welcome warmth on a brisk Spring morning.

The day first begins on the continental United States in Maine, not too far up the coast, but there are very few places where it is more spectacular and moving than here, at Maine's oldest lighthouse, Portland Head.

Some history of this special mountain paradise:

"In 1960, Democratic Senator Frank Church of Idaho introduced legislation for a feasibility study to survey the area for national park status. While Church allowed the 1960 feasibility study legislation to die, he introduced a bill in 1963 to create Sawtooth Wilderness National Park, which would primarily encompass the existing Sawtooth Primitive Area. Although the 1963 bill also was not voted on, Church admitted that it was not designed to pass but rather to encourage thorough feasibility studies by both the Forest Service and National Park Service. A 1965 joint report by the two agencies recommended either a national park administered by the National Park Service or a national recreation area managed by the Forest Service. In April 1966, Church introduced two bills, one to establish Sawtooth National Park and another to establish the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). The SNRA bill was cosponsored by Republican Senator Len Jordan, a former governor and sheep rancher, because it preserved the area while also permitting traditional uses such as logging, hunting, and grazing. In March 1971, Idaho's congressional delegation, which included senators Church and Jordan and Republican representatives Jim McClure and Orval Hansen, was finally united and introduced legislation to create the SNRA. On August 22, 1972, Public Law 22-400 establishing the SNRA, covering 756,019 acres (1,181 sq mi; 3,060 km2), and banning mining passed both the House and Senate and was signed into law by Republican President Richard Nixon. This legislation included the nearby White Cloud and Boulder Mountains as part of the SNRA." Wiki

Thank goodness they preserved this magnificent area. Idaho is known as the "Gem of the Mountains", and the Sawtooths are the finest gem in Idaho.

Tassagh viaduct on the Callan River near Keady, County Armagh. I was hoping for a sunburst but the cloud just kept rolling in and covering the sun. Only 1 celsius but still lovely weather for October. Lots of dippers and grey herrons around on the river in the morning.

On scales of 10 this sunrise over Wellington Harbour, NZ, is a 10. A real beauty.

This was originally called ‘Pine of the Times,’ on account of my not so intimate knowledge of trees. Reliably informed, by a very good source ( a huge sign saying Poplars outside it,) that these are actually Poplars, not Pines.

I've driven/rode past this plantation hundreds of times and it looked inaccessible from the main road.

Early morning exercise found me nearby and I decided to explore the back lanes around it. I found a suitable place to lock the bike up and crossed a small field to discover the most uneven ground I think I've ever walked on.

Must admit my thoughts did turn to how easy it would be to twist an ankle here so I was extra careful.

I don't know what I was expecting but I didn't think there would be a decent size pond in the middle of it. I took a few photos with the backdrop of the pines (poplars) and they looked great on the back of the camera, but not so great after I'd got them on the computer.

I thought it'd be easy to find a decent composition but other than the obvious one ( this one ), I struggled. The closeness of the trees which I thought would make the shot easy, actually made it way tougher.

I made my way around the pond and noticed a pair of Canada Geese nesting and sitting at the far end of the pond so left them in peace and made a mental note to come back and try again in a few months.

I'm truly amazed at what I'm finding on the doorstep or within a few miles of home.
