In 1911, Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500 race in his Marmon Wasp. Or did he? Another drive may have lost first place due to primitive technology and a chaotic crash. There were several crashes and three fatalities at the first Indy. One of those crashes may have robbed a man of his place in the history books.

Steering his Lozier racecar into the final miles of the International Sweepstakes 500-Mile Race on May 30, 1911, Ralph K. Mulford believed he had “a clear lead over everyone else,” he wrote in Automobile Quarterly in 1969.

Yet when he arrived in the winner’s circle after taking three extra “insurance” laps, race officials were already congratulating Ray Harroun as the race’s first winner. Protests were filed immediately, but after a full night of review, Harroun remained the winner and Mulford the runner-up.

So what happened? A crash that sent a car into the judging stands, as well as the malfunction of the new-fangled mechanical timing system, may have robbed Mulford of the first-place title.

Lozier protested the results, stating the Mulford's time was for 502.5 miles which meant they were the winners.

Race officials tried to verify this claim but without having appropriate records or timing, they could not determine the validity of the claim. Instead, the hometown car and driver were declared the official winners.

First time I’ve had any issue with either Nikon camera...all shots taken yesterday, including this, have a strong blue cast which when opened shows “colour temperature” away to the left at 2200 and “tint” at -3. I can change from “As Shot” to another setting to get something close to normal but highlights are still wildly overexposed meaning no detail at all in white areas. This is as good as I can get from a dozen images tried...my solution, get my D7000 and set the D610 as its older sibling is set and hope for the best.

First bus and new contract - Metroline VMH2465 (LK18AMO) on route 30 at Oxford Street/Marble Arch on 23/06/2018

Seen arriving on the first journey from Hackney Wick on route 30 is VMH2465, a Volvo B5LH/MCV EvoSeti, which has been taken over by Metroline from King's Cross garage, marking the return to double decker operation to Kings Cross garage since the old site closed in July 2010 and the 390 moved to Holloway.

This is the first order of the type for Metroline and this is also the first journey of a Metroline Evoseti in service as well.

The rest of the order are for route 274 and 43 from Holloway, although the latter are a sort of 'stop gap' until new electric double deckers arrive next year.

a fitting image for my 1,000th posting on flickr!

I received this camera from my parents on my 9th birthday (1961). Unfortunately I don't have any of the photos I took with this thing...

This is a "string" foundation pieced quilt super easy and fun to do. It is the first quilt I made. Perhaps its a bit bright. This is also a great way to use up scraps. This was made for my sweet Lilliana who helped with the construction.

An eastern Sierra Nevada aspen grove with first signs of autumn color.

One of the risks of starting my annual Eastern Sierra fall aspen color hunt a bit early is that I just might arrive too early for the color! That was mostly the case this year, when I made my first aspen-focused trip right at the beginning of October. The timing of the color transition can vary a bit from year to year, but I usually bet on the start of widespread color coming near the end of the first week of the month. Last year it came earlier — I photographed large groves of small trees at a location near the Sierra near the end of September, and I found good color close to the start of the month. That experience led me to start early this year.

There was some color when I arrived on October 2, but it was not widespread. Some of the higher elevation "scrub aspen" growing on rocky soil were changing to yellow, but most of the larger trees were still green. There were a few notable exceptions where groves had changed. More common were sights like this one — mostly green trees, leaning toward the lighter "lime green" color that comes before the transition, plus a few actual yellow leaves. This particular grove presented me with a special lighting situation. The trees were in the shaded bottom of a deep canyon, but across the canyon and beyond my camera position there was a large open slope that lay in direct sunlight. This rocky terrain reflected the warmer-colored light directly into the grove, giving a bit more light to the trees along its edge.

In addition to the Blue Ribbon, they told me I won $15 -- which I waived back to the Fair (which needs every dime). At the end of the Fair, the onion will go to the local Food Bank. Heck, I don't even like onions all that much ;-)

An unexpected sight! It ran up to the top and I got another shot silhouetted against the background, but it's a small insect and this is my clearest shot. Not a close-up, but there will be plenty of time for those in summer. Who expects insects and frost in the same photo?! I think this is a midge.
