Thanks to some extra DVC points from my sister's in-laws I was able to stay in Bay Lake Tower with a view of the Magic Kingdom two years ago. Since we were traveling with my not-quite 8-month old nephew it meant I was in the hotel room earlier than usual on a couple nights, which meant that I got to see Wishes from a different point of view. It also meant setting a two different cameras on tripods and shooting the show from different perspectives. For this scene, near the end of the show, I like this view.

One of my favorite parts of the Global Countdown at EPOCT are the miniature fireworks shows that occur behind each World Showcase Pavilion. Beyond being something you never see anytime else, these shows are set to music from the original IllumiNations show. If you've never seen fireworks set to Ride of the Valkyries, my suggestion is to run, don't walk.
This is a six-shot composite, as each show is approximately 30 seconds long, and required an ND3 to properly expose, except for Italy because my aperture was off and I botched it.
A throwback photo back from 2013 during an amazing full week of 4th of July fireworks all around the Walt Disney Resort as part of the Limited Time Magic year. What a week for photographing fireworks. Nothing like that ever since. Noting beats watching perimeter fireworks from Seven Seas… except watching perimeter fireworks on Main Street!
My original intention was to use my ultra-wide here, but due to weather conditions, I kept it in the bag. Still, I got a shot I really liked, and I can't wait to try it again when weather is better!
I'll be the first to admit that I'm NOT a fireworks photographer. BUT, being in Disney and constantly being around some of the best displays I've ever seen, I figured I'd adapt and give my go at capturing them!
This shot was at Epcot standing atop the restaurant at the Japan pavilion. I stole a page from Cory Disbrow's book and used this location as my "introductory trial" into Illuminations Of Earth fireworks.
All in all, I think it turned out good! I'm personally a fan of how each country's (that's pictured) shell is exploding towards the center of the lagoon, while the fireworks in the center are aimed upwards as if there's a dancing display of light and fire.
How'd I do?
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth fireworks, captured from Italy pavilion in World Showcase at Epcot.
As always, Magic Kingdom held it's test show for Fantasy in the Sky at 11:50PM on December 30th. It was a little bit of a smokey show, but I'll always show up and be thankful for 360 degree perimeter bursts and a mirrored launch site!
Some people ask why I wait so long for fireworks on New Year's Eve. It's because I get not one but two shows, I can see a show that is only shown once a year, and I get to see the last Peace on Earth tag. Finally, IllumiNations goes off SO early that it's still light out (not blue hour) when the first burst hits.
I forgot I had some pictures from one of the last Flagpole Down Days. Here we have the Sorcerer Mickey scene, complete with fan!
Here is one from the bridge to the Odyssey during Illuminations last month.
Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!
I haven't done very well posting photos lately, but I've been off capturing new images, so now is time to start sharing again. #FireworksFriday is a perfect time to do that!
Here's a view of Wishes that I don't see many photos of, but one I've come to appreciate. I cut things a little too close last week while trying to get in one more Jungle Cruise and didn't have time to make it back to Main Street in time for Wishes, but I enjoyed watching the show from this location and was glad to have at least one reasonable image.
When photographing fireworks from this location the bursts near Cinderella's Castle provide a nice "fill light" for the area. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
On Friday the 27th, I joined Charlotte, Terry, Patti & Dan for Mickey's Halloween Party. On the top of my list was Halloween Screams. I know, it's a boring castle shot, but Halloween Screams is a very castle-centric show. Lots of castle flares and castle bursts (as you see here). My hope was to get a front row seat for a nice, low perspective, but we didn't get there early enough. We did, however, manage to grab the first row of standing seats for an unobstructed view.
If you plan on shooting Halloween Screams, I recommend using an ND filter and/or watching the show on youtube so you get a feel for the timing on the ridiculously bright castle flares and the unexpected bursts of FIRE. I don't have an ND filter for the lens I used, so I had to stop WAY down and I still had a ton of blown out shots.
I'd love to go back and see this show again, but unfortunately Disney is only offering Halloween Screams during Mickey's Halloween Party. Maybe next year...
Nothing all that special about this photo, other than seeing Wishes from Main Street USA. I like the buildings framing the fireworks through most of the show. I guess I'll have to take my last few chances to capture this scene during the spring.
This fantastic fan from Fantasy in the Sky reminds me so much of Yoda, even though no music during the show is a Yoda cue. Oh well, have a great weekend!
You don't realize how big Wishes truly is until you step back a bit, and really take in the height and width.
Have a great 4th of July, folks, whether you take it in from Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or your local fireworks!
Here's a bit of a throwback shot back in 2013 when Norm Lanier and I shot around the world and settled at the Japan pavilion for some fireworks. This is my most frequented location to shoot Illuminations for many reasons... mainly because the beautiful view and fewer crowds!
I love watching Wishes from Fantasyland. It's so much less crowded than on Main Street and the fireworks are so much closer to you, which I personally like. Yes, the best view is of course Main Street and nothing beats watching them there. But, for the comfort factor alone, Fantasyland is a great spot too.
I keep adjusting my workflow lately, and have again experimented with some different layering techniques for this fireworks shot. I did a post-fireworks bracket shot of the foreground scene, and then layered in different fireworks shots into the sky. I like how it turned out, but let me know what you think too!
Whatâs your favorite spot to watch the fireworks from?
Holiday Wishes - Celebrate the Spirit of the Season, during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom
Have a fantastic weekend! I had a great time last week shooting fireworks from some unusual locations in EPCOT!
I truly never get tired of taking this shot. I just try to fit more and more fireworks sequences into it.
Another shot of IllumiNations from an angle I'd never shot from before. During this night shoot, I actually shot from three different locations fairly close to each other, for three different angles. This isn't something I usually do, so I was happy to see that all came out rather well.
The holiday tag during Illuminations in no joke one of the craziest fireworks shows outside of a 4th of July or New Year's Eve show in Orlando. The sheer volume of fireworks set off during the finale is intense, to say the least. Even at ISO50 and f/22, holding the shutter longer than a couple seconds, and your exposure will look like a white blob.
When I went through my shots, this was a distinctive rated 5 stars in Aperture. It looked this good on the camera, too; all I did was lighten up the castle a big and saturate the fireworks colors.
HalloWishes, as I've said, was absolutely incredible. And thanks to the Pixelmania crew, I had an awesome spot.
Wishes Fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. Photo was taken from the Ferry Boat Dock at the Ticket and Transportation Center. The only problem with this spot is the boats keep going back and forth during the fireworks so they tend to screw up a lot of shots. Fireworks is all about the timing, but at the boat dock it seems to be Timing X 2.
PS Happy Fireworks Friday.
A little three for one today: little bit of Monorail Monday, some Fireworks Friday, and everybody like lasers, right?!
It's been a bit of an EPCOT week, but that's what happens when I have a really good night of shooting. I'll end with Peace on Earth from inside China. I think we could all use a little hope and peace right now.
