These were wooden doors when the apartment was being previewed. After we signed the lease, it turned out the doors were covered - sloppily, too! - with 2mm steel to make them fireproof. WHY didn't they do it on the outside?! Sigh...

The fire-proof 'strong room' at the former Land Titles Office building in Queen Street, Melbourne. Constructed in 1874-1879, this building has not been used for decades. The complex is now owned by the Victoria University of Technology.

Some of the features include slate shelving and fireproof flooring.

The Mercer Tile Factory, a "working museum" where reproductions of his famous tiles are still being made today. Like his home (and only a stroll away from it), the factory is made of concrete so it would be fireproof.

Mary's Fireproof Hotel

Construction of the "fire proof" hotel began in 1922 by the House of David colony. The building is empty, abandoned, and for sale.

From this picture the appearance looks like a dull gray. Up close the surface sparkles in the sun. The special bricks used in the walls were cast of "Hematite," a special form of concrete made of 17 different minerals.

Vanderbilt insisted that The Breakers be made as fireproof as possible. Steel trusses support the masonry and exterior Indiana limestone blocks. The finished floors are of marble, tile, terrazzo, and mosaic.

--------------------------------

The home was constructed between 1893 and 1895 at a cost of more than $12 million (approximately $310 million in today's dollars).

It is the most-visited attraction in Rhode Island with approximately 300,000 visitors annually.

The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.

In 1893, Vanderbilt commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design the villa. Hunt directed an international team of craftsmen and artisans to create a 70 room Italian Renaissance- style palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Allard and Sons of Paris assisted Hunt with furnishings and fixtures, Austro-American sculptor Karl Bitter designed relief sculpture, and Boston architect Ogden Codman decorated the family quarters.

The Vanderbilts had seven children. Their youngest daughter, Gladys, who married Count Laszlo Szechenyi of Hungary, inherited the house on her mother's death in 1934. An ardent supporter of The Preservation Society of Newport County, she opened The Breakers in 1948 to raise funds for the Society. In 1972, the Preservation Society purchased the house from her heirs. Today, the house is designated a National Historic Landmark.

To this day members of the Szechenyi family use the third floor as a private residence - which is not open to the public.

Plans for a building at 112-122 W. 107th St. were filed with the New York City Dept. of Buildings in 1915 for a 2 & 9-sty brick, fireproof garage and warehouse, 100×97, by Chelsea Storage Warehouses, Inc., Louis Schramm, president / 426 West 26th St. The architects were Wortmann & Braun / 114 East 28th St. ("Manhattan NB Database 1900-1986," (10 March 2010), www.MetroHistory.com).

This building currently (March 2010) houses a Manhattan Mini Storage location. The sign still existed in 2005, which was the last time I photographed it. See www.flickr.com/photos/wgrooch/4426979849/

Current (March 2010) Hahn Bros. website is www.hahnbros.com/ They have an address in Jersey City, New Jersey, but google maps did not show an actual storage facility at this address.

The architects Wortmann & Braun designed the Royal Castle Apartments, 20-30 Gates Ave., Brooklyn (1911-12), an officially designated New York City landmark.

Established in 1930, this fireproof storage warehouse had a unique feature, a clocktower to illuminate the sky.

Surely at one time a fireproof warehouse building, dating to 1908, with brick ornamentation.

The "fireproof" Winecoff Hotel opened at Peachtree and Ellis Streets in downtown Atlanta in 1913 -- at 16 stories, it was then the tallest hotel in the city.

On December 7, 1946, it burned, killing 119 people. It's stood empty ever since.

Georgia Tech student Arnold Hardy took a famous photo of a woman jumping from the hotel; it won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, making Hardy the first amateur photographer to do so.

And the Winecoff fire was instrumental in spurring the nationwide adoption of fire codes, fire escapes, and sprinkler systems in hotels.

The Brown Palace Hotel, America’s second fireproof building, was begun in 1889 and completed in 1892. Denver architect Frank E. Edbrooke designed the building for Henry C. Brown and co-owners W. H. Bush and N. M. Tabor. Brown paid three-quarters of the total $2 million construction and furnishing costs. The hotel has long played a role as the social and cultural landmark of Denver. It has regularly hosted U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and business leaders, as well as the traveling general public.

Vancouver Schools are modern, fireproof structures

Vancouver—An Educational Centre

Vancouver is the educational centre for the British Pacific Northwest. The University of British Columbia occupies a magnificent site overlooking the entrance to Burrard Inlet and the waters of the Straits of Georgia at the extreme western part of Point Grey. Here imposing administration, lecture, assembly, and dormitory buildings are being erected under the direction of the provincial government, and the first classes will begin university work of the highest rank in October, 1913.

In addition to the university the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Church bodies maintain denominational schools for theological students, and McGill University College gives instruction in the first three years in arts and two years in science along the lines pursued at McGill University in Montreal.

There are ten private schools for boys and girls where special attention is paid to music, languages, and matriculation subjects prescribed by the leading universities of Canada, Great Britain and the United States.

The School Board of Vancouver has jurisdiction over a normal school, a model school, two high schools, five manual training schools, and twenty-seven public schools. In addition there are five public school and four manual training school buildings included in the programme of construction for 1913.

During 1912 there were enrolled 12,393 pupils in the schools of the city, exclusive of private schools and 340 teachers assisted by 67 special instructors were employed. One of the important departments of school work in Vancouver is the night school system. During 1912, 1,972 pupils and 62 instructors were in attendance in this work, and a vast number of technical and scientific subjects were included in the curriculum.

By midsummer accommodation will have been provided for class-room and teaching purposes aggregating an attendance of 20,000. The chief difficulty that has confronted the Vancouver School Board in past years has been the problem of providing adequate accommodation for the rapidly increasing enrolment of city children of school age.

Vancouver's population has been increasing at the rate of 10,000 a year for the better part of a decade, a fact to which the increasing demand for educational facilities bears striking testimony.

There are many obvious reasons for this remarkable growth. May we send you fuller particulars under separate cover? Write Department C.
