Being a fireproof wood construction site, there were hundreds of wedges, these split from cedar shingles, as walls were fitted and aligned.

By rejecting drywalling as an interior cladding material we have used a minimum of 80% recycled material in both wall and insulation construction.

The effect is immediate. The air quality is high, the smell of timber immediately re-assuring and the levels of dust minimal.

Another shot of the Gridley Building. The architect was Horatio Nelson White of Syracuse. He aslo did the addition in 1875. Archimedes Russell did the interior renovation in 1899. With another interior renovation being done in 1974. It is the oldest of the three bank buildings that still flank the east side of Clinton Square. The Gridley Building was originally built as the Onondaga County Savings Bank (incorporated in 1855). Built in the Second Empire Style. The exterior was constructed of Onondaga limestone. Iron beams resting on masonry bearing partitions consitutes the construction, which was described at the time as fireproof. On the southwest corner is a 100-foot-high tower containing a four-faced public clock which the bank maintained for the city. In 1875-76 a 50-foot addition was made to the building at the east end, matching heights and exterior treatment exactly, so it cannot be detected. This portion contained offices and a passenger elevator, installed by Otis Brothers, powered by a steam engine. In 1897 Onondaga County Savings Bank moved to the new building across the street (the building in the photo that appears to be leaning but it really isn't ). Two years later, In 1899, the property was purchased by F. W. Gridley, who hired Archimedes Russell to renovate the interior. It was then that the Salina Street entrance was closed. In 1974, this became the first downtown buiding to be renovated for adaptive reuse, an effort that sparked preservation efforts. The exterior was cleaned and the windows were replaced, a difficult task considering the multitude of of sizes and shapes. Interior partitions were removed; interior brick walls, oak wainscoting, and cast-iron stairways were cleaned; the pressed tin ceilings were restored. The old bank vaults on the basement level are vestiges of the buildings former life. A small plaza with trees and benches enhances the front of the building facing Clinton Square. Various offices now populate the building. Located at 101 East Water Street, Hanover Square, Syracuse, NY. (109)

View of high-percentage, friable asbestos fireproofing on steel I-beam support members, partially shown through opening in suspended ceiling panel system. In this case, not only was there delaminated asbestos debris on top of the ceiling panels, but the interstitial space above the suspended ceiling system was used as an air plenum.

The fire-proof library of A. Piatt Andrew's 'Red Roof' house on the historic Eastern Point of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Many of the book were French which I assume he brought back from his World War I days starting the American Field Service. The house and its contents are now up for sale. I was part of a quick impromptu tour.

Vintage USG advertisement for PYROBAR building product. Ad states:

"Proved in big business for more than 50 years. PYROBAR partition tile. For low-cost, fireproof masonry partitions. In apartments, offices, schools, institutions -- big buildings of all types -- PYROBAR tile has been job-tested, job-proved during half a century. Here's why PYROBAR is the accepted material for non-load-bearing partitions -- why you'll want to specify PYROBAR for your big buildings:

Fireproof -- fire rating, from 1 to 5 hour, depending on thickness of tile and method of plastering.

Plaster Bond -- natural affinity of plaster for PYROBAR gives bond safety factor of 173.

Saves Plaster -- large size machine-moulded units lay up accurately; grounds are 1/2-inch instead of 5/8" or 3/4".

Sound Resistant -- up to 42.8 db. sound transmission loss rating (up to 57.6 db. rating with one side furred with resilient clips and metal lath).

Low Cost -- material cost is low; large units lay up fast; lightweight; fewer joints; cutting ease reduces waste.

UNITES STATES GYPSUM -- the greatest name in building.

Illustration of corrugated asbestos paper insulation, rolled sheet-form for applying onto larger surfaces of mechanical systems. Image is from a 1908 insulation product catalog by the former H.W. Johns-Manville Company and is only one of several hundred different types of asbestos materials once offered by Johns-Manville at the peak of its existence. And to think, J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.

In 1912, the Fort Worth Stock Yard Company built brick and steel fireproof buildings to replace wooden horse and mule barns destroyed by fire in 1911. The wide space between the building spawned the nickname "Mule Alley." During World War I, the Fort Worth Stock Yard Company was a major supplier of horses and mules to the war effort. The Fort Worth Stock Yard was the largest horse and mule market in the world. The former barns are contributing property in the Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Blinded by the aluminum...

Not too bad huh? That's what I thought when I saw it on Craigslist, and drove 30 miles to get it.

Cons- The original black perforated vinyl has been sprayed painted, horribly. It stinks like ten old perfumed ladies playing cards in a rotten foam factory. The wheels are bent too bad to fix, one crushed so much it teeter-totters. Uh, tons of rust. And, oh yeah, the seat foam is rock hard, foam dust rains on the floor when you move it. Also it's missing 3/4 of it's bolts and screws.

Pros- look at that aluminum propeller base... and it matches my desk...

Your eyes don’t deceive you, this image depicts an authentic BLUE asbestos textile flamethrower's suit. "Blue" asbestos, known commercially as crocidolite, is a fibrous amphibole mineral which occurs in the natural environment in various shades of blue within geological ore deposits around the world and is one of six toxic mineral types regulated globally as "asbestos".

Mined and exploited for well over a century, crocidolite asbestos was used primarily for its unique and diverse physical qualities once considered beneficial to industry, offering strong chemical resistance, exceptional tensile strength, high insulating and fireproofing properties, as well as its ability to be woven into many textile applications.

However, regarded by a majority of medical experts and health organizations as the most dangerous and potent subtype of asbestos, crocidolite asbestos has been officially banned worldwide, but is still found lingering in our nations’ buildings, infrastructure, vintage consumer products, old military equipment, known as legacy asbestos.

In the example pictured here, the grey-blue textile comprises nearly pure crocidolite asbestos and is shown woven into an original World War I-era military flamethrower’s full-body suit (quite possibly the world’s only existing completely intact head-to-toe crocidolite asbestos protective apparel). The glaring, blue asbestos suit with reflective mica eye-shields stands hauntingly encased within a glass exhibit, all while housed inside the very impressive Royal Military Museum (War Heritage Institute) located in Brussels, Belgium.

In this front-on close view of the suit, it becomes more apparent that its design would lead one to believe the wearer had to breathe directly through the crocidolite asbestos fabric, likely inhaling countless carcinogenic asbestos particles from the very friable fabric.

(ALSO SEE: A separate macroscopic image of a single thread of crocidolite textile yarn, shown loosely tied into a knot, demonstrating closeup detail of the splintery asbestiform nature of asbestos).

The General Fireproofing Company opened in Youngstown, OH in 1902 and started as a maunfacturer of building materials. During WWII, they transitioned to manufacturing aircraft parts and after the war, back to furniture manufacturing. The furniture lines discontinued in the 1970's and GF went bankrupt in 1989.

Outstanding Characteristics of Fireproofing:

Fireproof Aluminium Composite Panel fulfils the requirement of fireproof due to the usage of modified polyvinyl plastic interlayer in between without toxicity and covering of unflammeable aluminum layer at two sides. The ability of fireproof is higher than index requirement, it is a safe fireproofing material and fully meets the fireproofing requirement specified in building code.

I love ghost signs on brick buildings.

This safe is great for small businesses. There is an internal locking drawer, an open slide out drawer, a small shelf, a letter size hanging file folder and a key storage area. There are multiple versions of this safe, this is the better one with a 2-hour fire rating (vs 1 hour standard) and is certified to protect digital media during a fire (ie: important company file backups! video tapes, cd-roms, dvds, etc...)
