Testing this Tamron 28-105 mm f/2.8 lens. As reviewed, this lens has been known to be soft wide open. I intend to learn how to maximize this handicap and see which type of photographs would benefit this lens property. On the other hand, at higher stops, the lens show great promise as shots become crisp and sharp.

Another winter firefly (Ellychnia corrusca), climbing up a tree.
On a whim, I picked up a cheap mini-softbox at Microcenter this morning, to use with the macro bracket. I had very low expectations of it, but it's actually semi-decent. I need to find some internal support to keep it from drooping, but it's a good size for macro (3.5"x3.5") and it fits pretty snugly on the flash. It's a little bit better than the bare flash I was using yesterday, but it does seem to take the edge off the hottest glare, and the texture on these fireflies' shell looks a bit more interesting.
Shot at 1:1 with the 100mm macro. Lit with a 430EX II on a macro flash bracket, camera left, on a Flash Zebra off-camera cord, through an RPS Studio (whatever they are) mini-softbox. TTL, but consistently around 1/16th power, and 2nd curtain sync because the bugs are moving.

The cover is made of enameled tiles, one created by each student (with one on the back). The hinge is copper and brass, the stitching is waxed linen. The paper is Mohawk superfine, the green borders are letterpress.

Firefly is surrounded by woods. And in those woods there is a place with nothing but hammocks. Very chill.

Found this firefly on my asian lilac outside. I think it is "Photinus Pyralis", but I can't be sure.
