"1942 Turning The Tide"

Fireflies (also called lightning bugs) are beetles. They take from one to two years to mature from larvae, but will live as adults for only about 21 days. Their light patterns are part of the adulthood mating display. Each species of firefly has characteristic flash pattern that helps its male and female individuals recognize each other. Most species produce a greenish-yellow light; one species has a bluish light. The males fly and flash and the usually stationary females respond with a flash. Peak flashing for synchronous fireflies in the park is normally within a two-week period in mid-June

Testing this Tamron 28-105 mm f/2.8 lens. As reviewed, this lens has been known to be soft wide open. I intend to learn how to maximize this handicap and see which type of photographs would benefit this lens property. On the other hand, at higher stops, the lens show great promise as shots become crisp and sharp.

On a whim, I picked up a cheap mini-softbox at Microcenter this morning, to use with the macro bracket. I had very low expectations of it, but it's actually semi-decent. I need to find some internal support to keep it from drooping, but it's a good size for macro (3.5"x3.5") and it fits pretty snugly on the flash. It's a little bit better than the bare flash I was using yesterday, but it does seem to take the edge off the hottest glare, and the texture on these fireflies' shell looks a bit more interesting.

Shot at 1:1 with the 100mm macro. Lit with a 430EX II on a macro flash bracket, camera left, on a Flash Zebra off-camera cord, through an RPS Studio (whatever they are) mini-softbox. TTL, but consistently around 1/16th power, and 2nd curtain sync because the bugs are moving.

Firefly, Angkor, Cambodia.

Found this firefly on my asian lilac outside. I think it is "Photinus Pyralis", but I can't be sure.
