From back in June. It was a bright night with a nearly full moon. This composite photo is 537 10-second exposures capturing fireflies in Floyd, VA with Tackyshack.

Have you ever seen a beetle like this one? Chances are you would recognize them even better in the dark! Like other pollinators, fireflies benefit from the wild areas of your yard. Tall grasses and other plants provide cover during the day so they can hide from predators, and turning off your exterior lights after dusk limits light pollution so they can communicate to one another using their flashes.

On September 20th, 2002 (exactly ten years ago), the first episode of the TV series Firefly premiered on the Fox network. Joss Whedon put together something so original, dramatic, and humorous, that it remains my favorite live-action TV show to this day. Sadly, the show was cancelled before the season was completed. The story could have ended there, but it didn't. Fans promoted the series, and word of it grew. The Firefly fanbase eventually became so popular that a feature film, Serenity, was released in 2005. Ten years from now, Firefly is a long way from being forgotten. The fanbase is bigger than ever, with more people being introduced to the show every day. Here's to Firefly flying for ten years!

Lampyridae is a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey.

When the stars come to play on Earth..
Another night, another place, another spectacular show.
Fireflies really are my favorite subject from now on.
