Shortly after 5:30 PM Saturday evening, Santa Barbara County Fire responded to reports of multiple people trapped on the beach. Upon arrival the first engine found 3 victims, 2 female and 1 male, trapped on the beach by rising tide and surf. Unable to make it back to the stairwell, the fire department opted for a rope rescue. A hole was cut in a fence and two rescue personnel rappelled approximately 75ft down to rescue the victims. The rescue took over an hour as the surf continued to slam against victims and rescuers. Three engines, a truck and a water rescue team responded to the scene. All three victims sustained only minor injuries.

It's not every day a fire engine pulls up outside my house, today one did, the reason was that someone had driven a car up the muddy bridle path, into a field and set fire to it. I wanted to get closer but we weren't allowed to, so the two shots of the fire were taken through the hedge from afar.

1936 Model 1407 Packard 12 5 Passenger Sedan

The Packard Red Hexagon was undeniably one of the automobile Industries earliest marks of quality. Originally a black & white symbol when it appeared in 1908, the red background originated when mechanics would paint the Indentation of the logo on the hubcaps of refurbished vehicles declaring them 'complete', and superior to other cars (in the owners eyes). Ultimately the Packard company began producing the symbols with red backgrounds, which remain a symbol of pride a superior craftsmanship.

ASK THE MAN WHO OWNS ONE

This phrase was used in Packard sales campaigns for many years, it is regarded as the most famous ad slogan ever created in the US- coined in 19O1. The slogan was inadvertently created when a man inquired about purchasing a Packard and the company owner, overwhelmed with producing the new cars, replied through his secretary to "Ask the man who owns one". The ad campaign was born!

Packard built 80,978 cars in 1936. 623 were 12 cylinder, but only 5 of the 12 cyl cars were a 5 passenger sedan! The brakes are mechanical with vacuum assist, the AM radio was installed at the factory, and the paint and upholstery are original. The car before you appears as it has been for over 75 years. If you're lucky enough to be here when we start the car next, you'll truly appreciate the precision craftsmanship of the nearly silent but powerful engine.
