No trip to the Far East, particularly Japan obviously, would be complete without bringing back some Tomica! Despite one of the very first diecasts bought for me as a toddler being a Tomica its a brand which has never really had the chance to shine here in the UK and indeed Europe despite their obvious appeal.
I'm certainly no Tomica newbie but due to high prices online its always been a peripheral brand in my collection and so spending three weeks in Japan has gone a little way in correcting that balance. A combination of an extremely favourable exchange rate and availability every bit as good as Hot Wheels is here ensures I brought back suitcases full of them! ;-p
In many retailers and with additional tax free discounts a lot of the Tomica mainline models actually cost less than what most of UK stores charge for Hot Wheels which is definitely a sobering thought!
This gorgeous little Morita Fire Engine Type CD-1 is typical of the diecasts produced by Japans favourite toy car brand, an unashamedly domestic themed vehicle with a heavy metal content, great detailing and working suspension.
Found in a BIC Camera store which proved a good and inexpensive source.

Paisley Fire Engine Rally 2013.
It was a wet and fairly windy day at this years Fire Engine Rally so just goes to show that the sky's over Paisley are not always blue...

A 1912 Russo-Balt mod. "D" 24/40. This is actually the only fire engine made by the Russo-Balt factory. It is based on the 1 ton truck chassis and was ordered by Riga Peter's Fire Fighters Association. It was found as scrap metal and was dissassembled in the home of former fire fighter J. Mezhpapans in Rauna in 1976. In 1978 it was renovated by AAK and the fire department of Latvia SSR. It is powered by a 4501 cc, four cylinder, 40 hp side valve engine giving a top speed of 40 km/h.

First released way back in the 1970's, the Hot Wheels fire-Eater casting is quite the survivor. It returns for late 2021 in a noticeably modified form, particularly its front end where its lights and grille arrangement are now part of the baseplate to cut down on costs. Its body is predictably now all plastic but still has some charm nonetheless. Is this a generic design or loosely based on a real vehicle? Part of Case Q found recently at ASDA. Mint and boxed.
As bottom end priced Fire Engine models go surely this HTI one is one of the best. Unlicensed but the cab design appears to be based on a MAN TGA, this is a crisply cast and well finished model with some nice detailing. Part of a five vehicle Teamsterz branded set bought some months ago from Aldi. Mint and boxed.

I've gleaned the following information from sixappeal.org. F919 UOT is a Carmichael TACR2a which was originally registered 10 AY 00 and was used at Wittering. Reregistered and restored it is now fully operational and in regular use for fire cover. Here it is seen on July 27th 2013 attending the Ringmer Steam & Country Show.

Quite possibly a copy of the overtly generic castings which used to be sold under the Fast Lane brand at Toys R Us and indeed still are in countries where they are still trading. I'm not usually a fan of such ficticious designs but its pretty clean in its styling. Part of a 20 vehicles set now appearing at Smyths Toys. Mint and boxed.
