Two Young Herons

(Hector and Helen)

The shutterspeed could have been higher, the bin is annoying and I needed to be closer, but nature doesn't wait unfortunately.

Grey Herons fighting over food in London's Royal parks

This shot was taken in the 1960's by my grandfather, Lucien Toucas at a bull fight in Spain. He captured many shots of this fight, and most, all recorded on slides, are in the process of severely discoloring.

Pop, in addition to being the executive chef of the renowned grand hotel, The Hotel Astor, in New York City, was a Frenchman, and would take a cruise now and then to his hometown in France, also taking in other European sights like this iconic fight.

Mixed in with Pop's slides were ones that appeared to be tourist photos that were sold to those whose cameras weren't working, or who didn't want to be bothered recording all the sights! I wouldn't have known they did that except for some of the markings on the slides. Many of those shots were obviously very professional. My grandfather had great equipment for the day, and was an avid photobug, but lacked some of the composition skills that were evident in some of those shots. He did a pretty good job on this one, though.

In my edit of this shot, I used the black & white filter to remove all the violet tones that came up on the pavement, but erased the rest to leave the colors. I think the result looks a little more natural. Many of these old slides are getting very purple, orange or red in tone now. Sadly, it wasn't that many years ago that they were just fine. Time is the enemy of film.

The mockingbirds love to pose and fight, the one in the back looks much worse for the wear, and a little rough on the wings too. The other one seems to be moving fluidly, maybe a little more confident! These two reminded me of old samurai movies, with their winds swinging through the air so much like katanas.

What I like best about the shot is the one on the bottom showing some type of defensive behavior, but doing so fluidly, look at his tail and how it balances the wing movement. This one is firmly anchored and drove off the poor intruder, who is looking rough. If you see him on large, you can see how rough he looks.

Fight for Survival

Today is World Polar Bear Day, an annual event celebrated every February 27 to raise awareness about the conservation status of the polar bear.

Internationally, polar bears are listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN. The primary conservation concern for polar bears is habitat loss and reduced access to their seal prey due to climate change. Scientists predict that as the Arctic continues to warm, two-thirds of the world's polar bears could disappear within this century. Research also shows that hope remains if action is taken to greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions soon.

But while most people think that global warming is the overhanging threat to polar bear survival, it is actually the continuation of unsustainable hunting pressure that is driving the species towards extinction.

More than 600 (!) bears are killed per year by humans across Canada alone, the vast majority by indigenous Inuit people, a rate calculated by scientists to be unsustainable. Lack of courage and honesty from environmental groups and politicians is allowing this scenario to continue.

Morten Joergensen has written an important book about ALL the threats polar bears are facing, and with very urgent recommendations: Polar Bears on the Edge: Heading for Extinction while Management Fails.

So while I was messing around with the coloured backgrounds i thought; 'why not create the dvd cover'... so I did. Not quite the same due to physically limitations, but you get the idea..
