“Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Not a penny was there in it,
Only ribbon round it.”
Traditional English Nursery Rhyme, published in 1842, but sung for at least a century beforehand.
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 2nd of August is “regard the R”, a theme where it is required to take a photo where something beginning with the letter R should be the main subject of the picture. In this case, I have opted to delve into one of my many collections. I collect antique and vintage purses, handbags and reticules. I have chosen one of the latter: a reticule. So what is a reticule? A reticule, also known as a ridicule or indispensable, was a type of small handbag or purse, similar to a modern evening bag, used mainly from 1795 to 1820, but as late as the Twentieth Century up until the Great War. The reticule became popular with the advent of Regency fashions in the late Eighteenth Century. Ladies did not have pockets in their dresses throughout this period, and a reticule could be used to keep the necessities a lady might require. They are usually embroidered or beaded. My reticule is an Edwardian one that has been stunningly hand beaded with a pattern of pomegranates, grapes and flowers, and the reticule features a russet silk interior (another R). It is in such good condition for its age that this reticule is a museum quality piece. To add some extra Rs to fill the frame, I have placed the reticule on some satin brocade, featuring Art Nouveau roses. I hope you like my choice of subject for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.

A lovely spiral staircase with contrasting textures and centre sculpture in one of the many public spaces featuring art at the Embarcadero Centre complex in San Francisco’s financial district. This bronze sphere is an untitled work by German artist Fritz Koenig.
Towards the end of this month, the current inworld location of Art Korner will be closing permanently and I will be dedicating my time to Artsville, a collaborative project with ValiumSL.
The Art Korner blog will, of course, live on and will be the place where you will be able to stay updated on exhibitions and installations in the art world including everything at Artsville.
Artsville is designed by Megan Prumier and features a unique sim build which I am sure you will all enjoy.

The Grand Opening for Artsville will be on June 24th, 25th, 26th and will feature art from some incredible artists along with some of the most fascinating musicians and performers.
We hope to see you there! LM coming soon!
JUGENDSTIL... Tulip
Jugendstil, artistic style that arose in Germany about the mid-1890s and continued through the first decade of the 20th century, deriving its name from the Munich magazine Die Jugend (“Youth”), which featured Art Nouveau designs.
An artistic red Tulip almost like a conductor of the orchestra. AAH imagination is a beautiful thing!

Photo taken at the Mori Art Museum on the fifty-third floor (53F) in the Mori Tower, Roppongi Hills. I shot my way through the "Sensing Nature" exhibit, which featured art pieces by Yoshioka Tokujin, Shinoda Taro, and Kuribayashi Takashi. (See More about the Mori Art Museum. Or, read commentary about the "Sensing Nature" exhibit, with photos, via Google Translate.)
Beautiful tiles and signage in the subterranean world of New York City’s Subway are found in many of the old stations that date back turn of the twentieth century, when the city of New York and the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit company) and BMT (Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation) undertook a large scale massive rail construction project which would be known as the Dual Contracts. The ‘Dual’ nomenclature referred to the fact that it was contract between New York City and two separate companies, the IRT and the BMT. The IRT had opened the first subterranean subway in Manhattan. When it was all said and done over 300 stations were completed in a period of 34 years under the leadership of Squire J. Vickers who took over for the architectural firm Heins and LeFarge who the city had initially contracted to design the first IRT stations, stations based on the “City Beautiful” theories that arose from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The designs of architects George Heins and Christopher LaFarge, engineered and built by William Barclay Parsons and opened to the public on October 27, 1904 were Beaux Art stations that featured art-and-crafts stylized glazed terracotta and mosaics and were featured in the first 28 IRT stations that were completed. For many so called ‘subway connoisseurs’ these first 28 stations represent the apotheosis of subterranean subway design.
When Vickers took over in 1908 he somewhat simplified the design of his predecessors, still artistic and lovely, but with an eye for ease of maintenance doing away with the bas-relief terracotta signs going forward. Squire Vickers wish was to design something recognizable, beautiful but that would last and withstand years of usage. His work would be referred to as “Dual Contract Signage”, squared off mosaic tiling that utilized Arts-and-Craft type that would adorn the twenty-plus lines that were constructed under the auspices of the Dual Contract in four of the five boroughs of New York, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. It is because his contributions to over 300 stations and leadership that Squire J. Vickers is referred to as the architect of the New York subway system or the ‘Underground Renaissance Man’.
I enjoy viewing and photographing the beautiful signage of this subterranean world of the labyrinth of New York City Subway, the IRT and BMT lines now all belong to the MTA along with the IND (Independent) line and there’s an unofficial ban on photography by the MTA since the events of 9/11/2001, though for the most part MTA police do not strictly enforce it, I take pictures of the tile work with policemen only a few feet away. I understand the fear is that someone will take photos of the structures to use for a bad purpose, but these stations, their signage are works of art.
The signage at the Spring Street station which is what this image is of is very typical Dual Contract signage, the raised borders around the letters, fancy decorative border running along the entire length of the tile wall of the station. The blue background behind the white letters were a form of color keying local stations along lines also Vickers idea. However a telltale of the age as there is clear water damage from the ceiling that washed down on the lettering. I will be posting more signage, I’ve been taking pictures of them for the past 30 years. Under Mayors Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani, Bloomberg and current mayor De Blasio, the MTA has spent a great deal of effort cleaning, repairing and restoring many of these old 300+ stations because just like a lot of things during the turbulent 1960’s, the bankrupt 1970’s and graffiti laden 1980’s, the New York City Subway stations were really a mess when I was a lad.
This was captured with a Nikon 1 J1 MILC with a Nikon 1Nikkor 10-30mm F3.5-5.6 VR lens processed in Photomatix Pro and cleaned up in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Buffalo, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2024
Main Street is Buffalo, New York's historic thoroughfare, originally surveyed in the late 18th century from an ancient Native American trail. It has been central to the city's growth, serving as its primary hub for commerce, banking, and entertainment.
History and Evolution
Transportation Hub: Since the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, the street's southern end became a vital transportation center, connecting lake vessels with the canal system, and later with railroads and streetcars.
Commercial and Social Center: Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the street solidified its role as the city's premier retail destination, featuring grand department stores (like AM&As and Hengerer's), major banks, and the residences of the social elite.
Theatre District: The 600 and 700 blocks of Main Street flourished as Buffalo's Theatre District, featuring iconic venues like Shea's Buffalo Theatre, which continues to host Broadway shows today.
Current Status and Features
Infrastructure and Traffic: A downtown section of the street was closed to car traffic in 1985 to accommodate the above-ground portion of the Metro Rail (light rail). However, a project called "Cars Sharing Main Street" has been gradually restoring vehicular access to this central corridor.
Activity Centers: Main Street remains a crucial urban axis, particularly in the areas around:
Lafayette Square: A civic center.
Canalside: The revitalized waterfront area.
Theatre District: Featuring art galleries, restaurants, and performance venues.
Historical Divide: Historically, Main Street has often been viewed as a social and economic dividing line in Buffalo, with noticeable contrasts between neighborhoods located to the east and west of the street.

Photographed at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens near Penzance in West Cornwall this is an unusual departure from my normal photography as I don’t normally feature art work from any other artists in any art form. However this particular piece caught my eye and I immediately thought that it would make a great black and white image (for me!). The park itself is a great day out for those who love formal and informal gardens and in particular the many and varied sculptures and artistic ideas that are scattered across the site, and if my image inspires someone else to visit and appreciate the many artists’ works then I’m not hung up about “plagiarising” their work by means of my photography.

The best thing you can see with the fall colors in Colorado are the red orange Aspen Trees. Sometimes they are by themselves, other times they are mixed in with the golden colors. Mother Nature has a way of making beautiful art. Glad I found this Aspen Tree Colony that was turning red. IT was the only one in the area.

The Usherer by Amy Ferrari
“This tree is mighty and responsible for ushering the clouds along their way. The road and telephone lines think the tree’s methods are
outdated, but the tree knows human technologies come and go, and can never compare to Nature”
A compulsive doodler, Amy has always been fascinated by line, shape, colour and pattern. The desire to celebrate the disregarded has always propelled her creativity.
Quilting Bee by Roger Witmer
It is easy to describe this as a typical Mennonite pastime but the art of quilting speaks to so much more. It is a community building art form that culminates in an incredibly practical item. Community, creativity and practicality are perfect descriptors of not only the local Mennonites but also the entire Region.
Roger has been a professional artist in Waterloo County for over 35 years and ran his own gallery in St. Jacobs from 1991 to 2008 when he retired and now paints for his own pleasure. Roger showed and taught in the building that is part of this Cultural Centre Hub now opened as THE TASTING HOUSE.

My Favourite Photograph?
Adelie penguins at Paulet Island. Canon EOS-1D X with EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X.
It is difficult to say one photograph is a favourite. Unlike ice creams which come in a limited number of flavours, photographs are myriad in number and one's taste changes from time to time. However, this is currently my all-time favourite photograph taken from Antarctica earlier this year.
I was on a Zodiac with Aurora Expedition's Howard Whelan and Canon Master Cinematographer Abraham Joffe, just touching the stony shore. We were shooting for the Tales By Light episode. Not too far away, this Adelie penguin was contemplating a swim, but keeping an eye on us. However, he (she) was the only penguin at all interested in what we were up to.
The elements in the photo that I like most are the low camera angle, which means we're at the same level as the penguin and below the tops of the growler ice bergs in the background. I also love the blurred background. The blur turns a straight photograph into a work of art, purely because of the bokeh - the out-of-focus areas. They almost look like they have been hand-painted.
In terms of technique, the telephoto lens does all the work, but you need to focus on something relatively close with areas behind and in front of your subject to be blurred. If you focus on a subject near infinity, then there's nothing behind the focus point to be out-of-focus and the result just looks like an ordinary shot.
If you haven't caught Tales By Light yet, produced by Canon and National Geographic Channel, please tune in this Sunday evening. My mum says this will be the best episode of the six because her son is in it. We've currently seen four amazing episodes featuring Art Wolfe, Darren Jew and Krystle Wright. Following my episode on Antarctica, the following week Richard I'Anson will feature in an amazing piece on India and the Himalayas. Feedback (so far - I hope mine matches it) has been sensational!
So, please tune in on Sunday at 8.30 on the National Geographic Channel.
And if you'd like to visit many of the same Antarctic/South Georgia destinations this November/December, join me with Aurora Expeditions as part of a special photography group. For more information, visit www.auroraexpeditions.com.au/petereastway
