The Menagerie Collection features twenty beautiful lockets with whimsical anthropomorphic animals and a freshwater, baroque pearl. These are wonderful – just large enough to show the beautiful detail of the vintage illustrations, and small enough so that one needs to pay attention to realize they are not your run-of-the-mill cameos!

Each comes with silver-plated findings and a 20” silver plated chain.

All pendants are made of printed and cut acrylic, which is rigid, quite light, and slightly translucent. Pendants are 2.3” / 5 cm long.

I love taking pictures of water features. I thought this one turned out pretty well by adjusting my aperture to make the colors a bit cooler.

This exhibition features new work from current North Dakota State University photography students. These fourteen students are enrolled in either Advanced Photography or a photography Independent Study.

In Advanced Photography students explored a topic of their choosing through five “variations,” which required them to produce five different bodies of work about their topic over the course of the Fall 2016 semester. After completing all variations each student chose one series to display in the gallery in frames that they built.

Students who enrolled in Independent Study designed a large, semester-long project that explored a topic and technique of their choosing. Work from these students’ ranges from photographic installation to darkroom prints, and nearly all presentations include frames made by the students.

As a whole, this exhibition displays the breadth of interests and skill present in a group of student artists and showcase the depth of the Visual Arts program at NDSU. Preparing work for the Memorial Union Gallery provides students with an opportunity to develop their professional skill sets and share their work with the broader campus community.

Photographic techniques capture electromagnetic wavelengths beyond human vision, revealing features invisible to the naked eye. These signals are processed into interpretable forms using methods like color mapping.

Pink lacks a specific electromagnetic wavelength, while grey poses a limitation due to its representation of only intensity—a blend of light and dark without spectral specificity. Imaging techniques reliant on spectral variation produce identical results for greyscale images unless non-visible data is present. Deviations from this uniformity may indicate errors, misinterpretations, or unknown phenomena.

Contention persists over analytical debates, including dismissible claims like Van Allen belt dangers and contested evidence of lunar mirrors. The precision of laser reflections targeting a moving 3x3-foot marker on the Moon highlights technical skill but often fails to resolve skepticism. For instance, a 0.1° shift moves a laser spot 670 km across the Moon's surface.

Forensic analysis (2022, 2023) of Apollo 11–17 photographs assessed authenticity claims. Images of humans in space, Earth, and the Moon's distant views were validated, but Moon landing visuals showed variations, suggesting diverse techniques may have replicated certain elements.

PEMi (Photoelectromagnetic Image) software enhances forensic analysis by differentiating natural and artificial light sources, revealing hidden features. Each PEMi-ID links to original sources, ensuring traceability and comparison.

The tumbler is heavy, solid, and very nice. It features a gasket-style lid. It secures well but small children could simply pull it off - so be advised it's not a safety lid.

The lid also features a slide spout that opens and closes via a slide which bisects the top - not a swing opener.

The print is saturated very nicely - deep, full, vibrant colors. Like most dye-sublimation printing it can be a little "soft" around the edges. However, that's an artists-eye comment as I doubt the average consumer would get any sense of the printing technique used.

The tumbler also features a rubberized bottom to prevent sliding or, more important (in my opinion) sticking to glossy coasters if moisture ever was present.

Speaking to that I've filled it with hot and cold in a room temperature room (as it is purposed for hot and cold liquids) and never once did condensation form on the outside of the container - and I'm in Iowa (the land of humidity).

Goblin Valley State Park is a state park of Utah, in the United States. The park features thousands of hoodoos, referred to locally as goblins, which are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles, some as tall as several yards (meters). The distinct shapes of these rocks result from an erosion-resistant layer of rock atop relatively softer sandstone. Goblin Valley State Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, also in Utah about 190 miles (310 km) to the southwest, contain some of the largest occurrences of hoodoos in the world.

The park lies within the San Rafael Desert on the southeastern edge of the San Rafael Swell, north of the Henry Mountains. Utah State Route 24 passes about four miles (6.4 km) east of the park. Hanksville lies 12 miles (19 km) to the south.

Evidence of Native American cultures, including the Fremont, Paiute, and Ute, is common throughout the San Rafael Swell in the form of pictograph and petroglyph panels. Goblin Valley is noted for several rock art panels, as well as the rock formations. The secluded Goblin Valley was then found by cowboys searching for cattle. Then, in the late 1920s, Arthur Chaffin, later owner/operator of the Hite Ferry, and two companions, were searching for an alternate route between Green River and Caineville. They came to a vantage point about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Goblin Valley and were awed by what they saw – five buttes and a valley of strange, goblin-shaped rock formations surrounded by a wall of eroded cliffs. In 1949, Chaffin returned to the area he called Mushroom Valley. He spent several days exploring the mysterious valley and photographing its scores of intricately eroded rocks.

Publicity attracted visitors to the valley despite its remoteness. In 1954, it was proposed that Goblin Valley be protected from vandalism. The state of Utah later acquired the property and established Goblin Valley State Reserve. It was officially designated a state park on August 24, 1964. In 2019 the state park was expanded by adding 6,261 acres of federal land.

The unusual stone shapes in Goblin Valley result from the weathering of Entrada sandstone. The Entrada consists of debris eroded from former highlands and redeposited on a former tidal flat of alternating layers of sandstone, siltstone, and shale. The rocks show evidence of being near the margins of an ancient sea with the ebb and flow of tides, tidal channels that directed currents back to the sea and coastal sand dunes.

Joint or fracture patterns within the Entrada sandstone beds created initial zones of weakness. The unweathered joints intersected to form sharp edges and corners with greater surface-area-to-volume ratios than the faces. As a result, the edges and corners weathered more quickly, producing the spherical-shaped 'goblins'.

4me4you Features - ‘reducing her colour palette..’

Artist: Vanessa Garwood

4me4you recently enjoyed a visit to PM/AM Gallery, where the spotlight illuminated the work of the talented artist Vanessa Garwood.

Vanessa Garwood, initially known for her mastery in oil-based portraiture, has evolved her artistic journey to embrace a diverse range of mediums and disciplines. This expansion has provided her with a broader canvas for creative expression, pushing the boundaries of her subject matter. Transitioning to a limited palette of black, white, and grey, Garwood delves into life's contrasting narratives with a literal visual representation, capturing the dynamic interplay on her canvases. Despite the constraint of this aesthetic choice, her works resonate with humour and satire, offering viewers an accessible entry point into her candid exploration of life's challenges.

In her latest artistic phase, Garwood has made bold decisions to paint exclusively in greyscale and switch from oils to the quicker drying medium of acrylics. These changes have streamlined her process, fostering a deeper immediacy in her work, which she considers her most personal to date. While her earlier focus was primarily on human subjects, including portraits, nudes, and dancers over two decades, she now draws inspiration from both reality and fantasy, blending boundless imagination with real-life figures. Despite the whimsical elements infused into her compositions, Garwood's commitment to naturalism ensures a relatable connection for the viewer.

The transition to a shorter window for paint manipulation may limit the time for technical refinement, yet it ignites a newfound spontaneity in Garwood's expression. Embracing this flux state, she thrives without the burden of overthinking. Surprisingly, the absence of colour doesn't diminish the vitality of her work; rather, it amplifies the raw energy of her paintings, captivating the viewer's imagination in monochrome. Garwood achieves a remarkable feat, activating the perception of colour in the mind without its physical presence, underscoring the power of her artistic vision.

A notable theme in Garwood's oeuvre is the strong presence of women engaged in everyday rituals seldom depicted in traditional art history—moments shared over drinks, cigarettes, laughter, and embraces. These scenes epitomise expressive freedom, celebrating vivacity while acknowledging underlying insecurities and challenges. They serve as a poignant reflection of a world grappling with oppressive struggles, yet reaching out for moments of joy and camaraderie amidst uncertainty.
