Although it was built of Portland stone the workmanship was very faulty. Between 1833 and 1840 extensive repairs were necessary, and a good deal of patching-up was done, until at last it was decided to build a new bridge on the same site (the present bridge), which, in 1869, was opened by Queen Victoria.
The present bridge is 923 feet long, consisting of five wrought iron arches built to a design by Thomas Cubitt. Cubitt also designed the adjacent rail bridge (now demolished) and it was a condition that the spans of the two bridges be aligned. It was built by P.A. Thom & Co.[2] and is owned and maintained by the City Bridge Trust, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Due to the volume of traffic over the bridge, it was widened between 1907–10, from 70 feet (21 m) to its present 105 feet (32 m).
The bridge became internationally notorious in 1982, when the Italian banker Roberto Calvi was found hanged below one of its arches in what was originally believed to be a suicide, but is now officially regarded as a murder.

Faulty unit - almost 20 years old, so those electrolytics have to be prime suspects! I suspect it is "hooting", so the decoupling around the three terminal miniature regulators are currently under suspicion.

Our annual break in the sun, this year to the Canary Islands. A marvellous time was had and as always I tried to capture many of the notable moments. Among the highlights were a trip 30 meters under the waves in a passenger submarine, a camel ride, lots of hotel entertainment, up a volcano or two, underground in lava-created tunnels, wild west night at Rancho Texas, which also has an animal park, and I enjoyed photographing the volcanic landscape.

after my drunk ass (and faulty diy camera strap) led my camera to its imminent death in sacramento, i kept taking pictures most of the tour. the view from the viewfinder wasn't THAT fucked up. unfortunately, the negatives didn't see it in the same light. (hah! get it?!) almost all the post-sacto shots came out like this. this particular blurry mess was sina and brandon's band playing in the living room of the gnomestead in oly, washington. photos taken of house member wearing "gnomeland security" badges are sadly unrecognizable.
Faced with a faulty auto panel, if you have one of these, conversion to semi-auto is simple - take the cover off behind the driver's head, unplug the similar 30-way plug and fit this one, and the auto panel is bypassed. These were used in LT garages as 'get-you-home' devices in case of panel failures on the road.

This is the faulty component in the left-hand channel: a 220uF capacitor that I measured on the multimeter at 17nF. The lack of capacitance made the regulator go into oscillation as the voltage was turned up. The top of the capacitor is slightly bulging, which is a sign of failure.

Unless my memory is faulty, this one probably comes from an old Marine, one of the survivors of the 2nd Raider Battalion's Makin Island Raid, who later became an arms specialist with the weapons company, 4th Marine Regiment.
It's been polished and the guard bent straight, but it's original and I suspect worth much more than was paid for it sixty years ago.

Attempt at your own risk!
My Powerbook was narcoleptic, it had a faulty temperature sensor which told the powerbook that it was basically on fire, when in fact it was not. This caused an emergency sleep whenever it damn well felt like it. Very annoying and very hard to work with! So after two years of research and $25 of screwdrivers I cut the damn thing out. Here are pictures that I hope will help others having the same problem as the below links did for me! I used cuticle nippers to cut the connecting legs of the sensor off the ribbon it was soldered on to.
A note to anyone else who decides on the cuticle clippers, make sure you cut the legs really far down close to the ribbon - I had some errant legs that shorted out the computer a bit and it wouldn’t boot, even when they were covered with lots of tape. I think they may have been touching under the tape which would explain it, but I can’t confirm since I don’t see that well! Trimmed down and retaped and everything is working great, knock on wood!

All too often I find myself making the same reference to: 'the sun setting on...' It's a natural result of the light being good at either end of the day and me being both terrible at getting up early and not very imaginative when it comes to metaphors.
Still, I hear positive things came of the public meeting concerning Herne Hill Velodrome so with any luck this photo can just be a nice photo, rather than a captured moment from the end of a great and historic sporting venue.
Instead it serves only as reminder of an excellent evening spent with my colleague Andy, playing with taped-up cameras and enjoying ourselves. Sadly Andy isn't joining the Seattle adventure, so there's every chance we won't get a chance to do this again. I hope, then, that the photo represents only the end of a personal chapter.
