Officially half-way done with this project!
Kay Kay and I went to breakfast and then went and froze our butts off at the beach. I almost fell through ice and Kay Kay almost had a heart attack.
Happy St. Patrick's Day from us both!

Another from Saturday morning's misty sunrise at Cresswell. For this one I used a little bit more in the way of filtering to bring out the colours in the sky and used the interesting rock faults as a lead in.
From my one visit here, this looks like a cracking spot at pretty much any tide, which is good, as I always struggle for high tide locations.
No flashing invites / banners please

Multiple levels (parallel planes; rock surface curves down to right) of slickensided fault surfaces in an outcrop of Marron Fm. andesitic volcanic rock (in south-central British Columbia), with one of my fingers for scale. Above my finger, the lighter coloured material is a mineral vein (fluid flowed along a fault plane and mineral precipitated from solution) with a patchy distribution now because it is partly eroded away.
The slickenlines present have two different groove lineation directions, diagonal down to the left and down to the right in both the purplish-brown host rock and the light brown vein material. They record two different steep (sub-vertical) directions of fault motion at this site back in the Eocene (ca. 50 million years ago), a time of post-orogenic normal faulting in this part of western Canada.

The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 25 km long, which separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales. The strait varies in width from 400 metres from Fort Belan to Abermenai Point to 1,100 metres from Traeth Gwyllt to Caernarfon Castle. The present day channel is a result of glacial erosion of the bedrock along a line of weakness associated with the Menai Strait Fault System.

Storm gathering over the Sierra del Carmen, 1974. Looking east from Big Bend, the high sierra is in Mexico and rises to an altitude of 8,921 feet above sea level, pine forests in the summit peaks. Faulting along the front produces wavy limestone rock formations.

Not my fault you can blame Cindy it's all her doing.
So far I haven't reached for the makeup so you could be safe but the night is young.
The Landsat-8 satellite captured this image of the San Francisco Bay Area in the US state of California on 5 March 2015.
The city of San Francisco is on a peninsula in the centre left section of the image. In the upper-central portion, we can see the delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers with brown, sediment-filled water flowing down into the larger bay.
Starting in the top-left corner of the image and running diagonally to the south is the San Andreas Fault. This is the border between the North American and the Pacific tectonic plates, and is responsible for the high earthquake risk in the area.
Zooming in, we can see that some basins running along the fault are filled with water. In the extreme upper left, Tomales Bay formed along a submerged part of the fault, with its northern reaches opening onto the Pacific coast (not visible). Near the centre of the image, a number of water reservoirs are situated in the fault, providing water for the public.
Differences in land cover are obvious in this image. Surrounding the Bay we can see densely populated urban areas in white/grey, while forests and park areas appear in shades of green. In the upper-right corner, we can see geometric shapes of large-scale agriculture, with fields in different colours depending on the vegetation type.
Distinguishing between different types of land cover is an important task for Earth-observing satellites, helping us to understand the landscape, map how it is used and monitor changes over time.
On 23 June, the first satellite in the Sentinel-2 mission will be launched, and will provide such information on land cover on a global scale. In addition, it will determine various plant indices such as leaf area chlorophyll and water content indexes. This is particularly important for effective yield prediction and applications related to Earth’s vegetation.
With its multispectral imager and wide swath coverage, the Sentinel-2 mission not only offers continuity, but also expands on the Landsat missions – which provided this image.

Bedrock under the gravels is the San Simeon ophiolite complex, a dike and sill complex which represents (I think) an old spreading center on the Jurassic(?) seafloor, as basaltic dikes were injected into the spreading "crack" to make new ocean floor. Sea-floor spreading was the key discovery in the then-new global tectonics which has evolved into the present-day understanding of plate tectonics, the details of which are way above my [retired] geologic pay-grade. Here, the diagnostic rock-type is microdiorite, which is simply finer-grained diorite: coarser than diabase, which is also reported to be present, but which I haven't yet seen. As you can see in the photo, the cobbles are sorted and crudely bedded, meaning they were deposited in fast-moving water. The yellow-brown color, from iron oxides, means deposition was subaerial = non-marine. I'm not sure what the story is for the larger, rounded "bowling-ball" cobbles below the bluff, except that they get rounded in the pounding surf, and are obviously strong! And not so easy to examine in person, for an old codger.
Structure: at the center of the photo, you will see a break (fault) with the right (south) side down. The unnamed fault displaced both bedrock and the older gravels. It was unmapped in the 1970s-era USGS mapping. It is likely a minor splay off one of the many faults which are more-or-less parallel to the coast, all likely related to the currently-active San Andreas fault system further east. According to my geologic guidebook, SLO county is moving North at around 1.5 inches a year. Which will bring us adjacent to downtown San Francisco in about 5 million years.... 🙀 Better shopping but worse traffic!
To the north is Point Sierra Nevada (rounded hill above it) and beyond that, the Santa Lucia mountains meeting the ocean about 15 miles north of here.

This is the FAP (Fault Annunciator Panel) on class 92 037 after climbing Beattock bank with train 6S94 14.40 Kingmoor Yard to Mossend Yard (normally 03.05 Dollands Moor to Irvine) the weight on this occasion being 1879 tonnes just under the maximum for a single class 92. When looped it was still red hot with all fans running in step three as one traction motor had reached 134°C and most were well over 100°. The biggest problem causing the displayed fault above is the no.1 traction converter had reached 65°C which is the critical point where the loco starts to enter self preservation mode and reduces traction power to the motors. If this kicks in before Harthope Viaduct climbing Beattock you are normally condemned to a slow death as the loco reduces more power, then as it drops below about 300kN tractive effort the loco simply stalls on the gradient. Thankfully I got the killer message just under a mile from the summit but drizzle was causing more loss of traction so the summit was reached at 14mph where I was able to get this photo in the loop having not acknowledged it thus not clearing the screen.
A few more grey hairs and time for a cup of tea and thankfully 92 037 came good for me in the end.
Iceland sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the fault line where two of the Earth’s tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart; as a result, Iceland is getting wider at a rate of roughly 1cm per year. Either side of this ridge, from the northeast to the southwest, earthquakes and volcanic activity are commonplace.*

My photograph used for the cover of the recently released book, Fault Line. It was taken many years ago when I was experimenting with my photography. Feel a bit inspired to do some creative indoor stuff now.

To me this is the most vibrant display of colour in the fall.
The Aspy Fault runs inland for about 40 kilometres (24 miles) through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Land masses move and separate along fault lines, geologists can determine what land masses might once have been connected. Cape Breton may have been joined to Africa at one time.
This hearth situation is my fault. I washed the cream-coloured cat beds in warm water and shrunk them. I then bought a tiger-striped replacement bed and have a second one on order.
Until today Sole showed no interesting in lying in front of the fire. Tessa, on the other hand, took over the too-small-beige-pillowy piece days ago.
On a chilly fall day at 12PM, I was lying down waiting for the southbound run as I was surprised by the sound of the bell from PW B23-S7 2215, the final "Super 7" in operation. PW2215 rounds the curve with a late CSO-3 headed north at Hartford, Connecticut as the crew gets a late start.
It was the final day of my last northeast visit and I have decided to make a last second trip to Connecticut with a stop by the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. Something told me to check out Hartford, CT one final time before going back to California. My gut feeling would lead to seeing the now final GE "Super 7" in operation and later, a CSOR High hood GP38-2 on the southbound CSO-4.
To explain the title, I attempted to shoot this locomotive with a close friend the week prior but due to a minor derailment, we weren't able to see it as it was 2 CSOR Geeps. But then I went alone only to be surprised by CSO-3 when she wasn't available....sorry bro.
