The Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest geyser basin in the park and is located near the northwest edge of Yellowstone Caldera near Norris Junction and on the intersection of three major faults. The Norris-Mammoth Corridor is a fault that runs from Norris north through Mammoth to the Gardiner, Montana, area. The Hebgen Lake fault runs from northwest of West Yellowstone, Montana, to Norris. This fault experienced an earthquake in 1959 that measured 7.4 on the Richter scale (sources vary on exact magnitude between 7.1 and 7.8; see 1959 Yellowstone earthquake). Norris Geyser Basin is so hot and dynamic because these two faults intersect with the ring fracture zone that resulted from the creation of the Yellowstone Caldera of 640,000 years ago.
- www.kevin-palmer.com - After climbing 3,800 feet in 2.5 miles, the trail ends. That was the easy part. The next section is about what you would expect with a name like “Chicken Out Ridge.” A highly exposed, near vertical cliff face must be negotiated, with a 2,000’ drop on either side. After that it’s one final scramble up steep, loose scree to the summit. Borah Peak is not only the apex of the Lost River Range, but also the highest point in Idaho. The views were spectacular, although diminished some by smoke. Unlike Bora Bora, Borah is no tropical paradise. Climbing season is short. The hazardous snow bridge on the upper slopes typically doesn’t melt out until the end of July. Borah Peak is also notable for being located on a fault line. In 1983 a magnitude 7.3 earthquake caused the mountain to rise by 7 feet. The looming descent had me wishing I had a wing suit, so I could fly the vertical mile back to the trailhead. But there are no shortcuts. The way down proved just as difficult as the way up.
The Hurricane fault is on of three major faults that marks the transition from the Colorado plateau to the Basin and Range geological province to the west. It is about 160 miles 250 km) long and has a vertical offset of nearly 8,000 feet (2400m) towards the Basin and Range Province.
It is an extensional (normal) fault that started with he extension of the Basin and Range province about 5 mio years ago.
Occasionally slickensides can be observed, where the heat generated by the friction of the nearly vertical drop melts the rock surface.

To me this is the most vibrant display of colour in the fall.
The Aspy Fault runs inland for about 40 kilometres (24 miles) through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Land masses move and separate along fault lines, geologists can determine what land masses might once have been connected. Cape Breton may have been joined to Africa at one time.
He got a little carried away with the female right by his side :>) I am protecting his modesty. Julie made me do this LOL and gave me the title. If I get booted from Flickr, it is all her fault. Rainy days bring out the craziness in me.

Stratum: Virgin Limestone, lower Triassic
As part of the Sevier orogeny much thrust folding occurred in this area. Here we see the initial stage of such a thrust fault.The limestone layer starts to buckle up under the pressure exerted from the left (west). In this case the fold is being pushed over the existing layer at right, and the two layers are separated by a thrust fault ramp. Some of the thrust faults can extend over 100 miles, this is just a baby one, but shows the principle of thrust faulting. The faulting here is caused by brittle deformation with breaking of the limestone layer. Over roughly one half mile, this rock layer showed over seven small thrust faults, some were caused by brittle deformation as well as ductile deformation

Like the Torridon peaks further south,
the monolithic Sutherland landscape
is made up of three key rocks:-
Lewisian Gneiss, Torridonian Sandstone and Cambrian Quartzite.
However, because of a series of violent mountain-building “thrusts,” and many faults and displacements, as well as igneous intrusion, and rocks being transformed, by heat and pressure, to Metamorphic rocks, the geology, here, is immensely complex.
The base rock, where many of the lochans are, is Lewisian Gneiss, 2-3 billion years old.
Above this is the bulk of Quinag, in the form of reddish-brown Torridonian Sandstone, over 500 million years old.
The peaks are capped by white crystalline Cambrian Quartzite, over 400 million years old.
Quinag has three main summits, all over 2,500 feet.
On its northern side, in the shelter of many foothills and
under the influence of a Maritime micro-climate, from the nearby coastal bay, remnants of ancient forests of Birch, Rowan, Wych Elm, Aspen and Oak can be found.
As with all Sutherland’s monolithic mountains, they seem higher than they are, because they rise from a low, hilly, loch-strewn hinterland.
Quinag resembles a grumpy Stegosaurus rising from its slumbers.
There is nowhere in Europe quite like it.
It is unique and quite fascinating.
Another world……
but a very peaceful and beautiful one.
This overlook is reached by the 9 mile long Hilina Pali Road which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1933 and 1942. The overlook sits on the Hilina Pali Escarpment which is the largest fault escarpment on the south flank of Kīlauea. Hilina Pali means windy cliff in Hawiian. It was windy when we were there. It had been a mostly sunny day but by the time we reached the overlook it was clouding up and a nice cool breeze was blowing. The Hilina Pali Overlook is approximately 2,282 ft (695.6 m) in elevation above sea level. The last volcanic activity in the area around the overlook was about 500 years ago. The overlook sits on top of the Hilina Pali Escarpment which is over 2,000 feet high and more than 12 miles long. The reward for a 9 mile drive is a breathtaking view out into the Pacific Ocean. The land sticking out into the ocean on the right side of the photo is Nali'kakani Point. On the left Kakwai Point can be seen. These points or capes formed as a series lava deltas when hot lava spilled into the sea. The entire east coast of Hawaiian National Park is mostly a large lava delta complex.
Trees on a windy day.
Well this was a fun playtime for Sliders Sunday.
The idea and the implementation were relatively simple, but by the time I explain it, you won't be convinced. That will be my fault though in trying to document what I ended up doing :(
And the whole reason for explaining things is to try and encourage other folk to have fun too. Kind of shooting myself with my own rifle...
The idea: trees in woods move a surprising amount on windy days. It's scary looking up and seeing a big beech swaying by ten or twenty feet above your head. Take a series of shots looking up and stack them as a kind of multiple-exposure just to show what goes on.
The implementation: point camera up and hold the shutter in continuous burst mode. This is nine images stacked thuswise.
First mistake: the burst just took over a second according to the camera metadata so not much movement (a tree swaying takes several seconds) - but enough! You can see that the higher thinner branches move more so their patterns are more spread out giving a brushlike effect.
Stacked in Affinity Photo which is really easy. You could also do it in Photoshop.
I actually stacked it five different ways using different mathematical operators (I was just thinking: try them all and pick the ones with pretty colours - AP gives you a preview just mousing over the operator list).
Second mistake: to be honest, that’s overkill. Most of the individual stacking operators produced intriguing results by themselves. I was just trying to make the fun last longer :)
Blended the layers together using different blend modes. Again just keep adding the different stack versions and go for a blend mode that looks pretty or interesting. The Minimum version of the stack gave you nine images of each branch like a rake brush effect which I liked so I emphasised that.
So that got us the basic result. The rest was just finishing.
There seemed to be a problem with the end product - there was a quite a lot of grainy pixelation (inherent in some of the blend modes). So I used a Maximum Blur filter at a low resolution to clump up the pixels a bit. More painterly that way, or so the thinking went...
Then a Curves adjustment in LAB mode to brighten the image and increase the contrast, enhance the colours (the basic strange colours came out of some of the stacking variants, but stacking tends to reduce contrast and saturation too so I tried to counter that).
Then two tweaks I feel naked without: sharpening (with Unsharp Mask) and a vignette (slight dark one here).
And we are done. And I have had fun. And you are exhausted :(
As usual for this group I shall post a link to one of the in-camera originals that were stacked, in the first comment.
Thank you for taking time to look. Especially at one of these Sliders Sundays strange manifestations of captured imagery…
I hope you enjoy it! Happy Sliders Sunday :)
[For what it's worth here are the details of the blended layers, all at 100% opacity.
Base layer: Range operator (Normal);
Next layer: Median operator, Difference blend;
Next: Outlier operator, Negation blend;
Next: Maximum operator, Negation blend;
Top: Minimum operator, Luminosity blend. This was the one with that most emphasised all the stripey branches :)

It looks like insects have been feasting on this fern along the trail in Goodenough Canyon, Idaho. I couldn't resist the spot of light through the trees.
I will probably be on and off Flickr for several days, so I am sorry if I miss some of your wonderful photos.

Þingvellir is a place in the administrative district of Bláskógabyggð in southwestern Iceland, near the Reykjanes peninsula and the Hengill volcanic area. Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is at the northern end of Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.
Parliament or Alþingi ("Althing" in English) was established at Þingvellir in 930 and remained there until 1798.[3] Þingvellir National Park was founded in 1930, marking the 1000th anniversary of the Althing. It was later expanded to protect natural phenomena in the surrounding area, and became a World Heritage Site in 2004.
Creo que mereció la pena levantarse para este amanecer de lunes, ya no por las fotos que saqué, que no me han gustado tanto como hubiese querido, sino por el espectáculo que pude ver.
Ahora mismo estoy escuchando Not Your Fault, Awolnation.

Laguna Salada

In this view to the northwest the Hayward Fault is located beneath (or is close to): Highway 13 (at bottom center of image), Lake Temescal, Highway 24 (near bottom of image), the Claremont Hotel (large white building in center foreground), the University of California, Berkeley campus, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (in center-midground), Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond, San Pablo and Point Pinole (in the distance), extending into San Pablo Bay. From there, the fault extends beneath the bay a bit, to where it has a large right step and becomes the Rodgers Creek Fault; the Rodgers Creek Fault extends northwestward to Santa Rosa.
well ... it's not my fault! The stand he came with is faulty ... so he can't stand ... at least now he can!! ^^
