In April and May, 1954, Arbroath Harbour enjoyed a sustained boom period, its busiest time since before the Second World War, when an average of four boats per week berthed to take on cargoes of grain. They were running a shuttle service to various ports in Denmark, The Harbour also welcomed the first German freighter since 1939, the Adler of Cologne, berthed at the far piper in the picture. The photograph marked a unique occasion, with three vessels taking on grain at the same time. The other two were the Cromarty Firth, from Newcastle (left), and the Gannochy, registered at Dundee, in the foreground. The week after the picture was taken, no fewer than six boats loaded grain at Arbroath.
