Here's an image from one of the greatest birthdays I have had to date.

We spent the entire day on a 16 km hike, which I can still barely move from. We spent some time in Banff, sat in the hot spring, then started driving home when it was already quite dark out.

While we were driving back to Golden, BC., where we are lodging, we stopped for a quick stop at this rest stop. It was clear at night, which we saw was rare for this area of the park.

I stacked all of these images (22) in Photoshop using Lighten blending mode. Originally, I was only going to have one frame with me in it, I am the blurry headlamp sneaking through the frame, but I decided to keep them all in there.

It was really difficult to compose the shot I wanted because of the constant traffic that whirred by the frosty mountain highway. Just off camera-right, the lights from cars in both directions were coming into play. I decided to work with it and it lit up the outhouse rather nicely. I didn't think so at first, but after reviewing on the screen when I got home, I knew I got what I wanted.

It's been a great pleasure to be out in BC, and Alberta for these last few days. I have some memories to take home and some lovely images, as well.

Here's to my 30th birthday vacation and time to pack up and head home, for the weekend!

Most of the time I shoot at sunset, today this was sunrise on MacIntyre bluff.

Salmon Glacier

The 5th largest glacier in North America and the world’s largest road accessible glacier is a remnant of that last great age of glaciers; the Fraser Glaciation period.

Located just north of Stewart and only accessible by driving through Hyder, Alaska. You will drive through Hyder at sea level and then the road quickly climbs and heads back into B.C. The road was originally built for Granduc Mines. There are several gold mines along the route, some long ago shut down with others going full tilt.

Driving through remnants of avalanches and slides from the latest storm, it is not a road for the faint of heart. Shear cliffs down one side that are not forgiving if such an accident were to happen to put you over the edge.

Going from the first view point of the glacier, known as the ‘toe of the glacier’ to the summit viewpoint at 3370 ft the landscape drastically changes. The trees at the summit are of the alpine variety, very stunted and unusual growth. And of course snow drifts and hundreds of waterfalls. Absolutely stunning surroundings the whole 37km drive.

Vancouver Nightscape at low tide...

A quiet morning at Buntzen Lake in Anmore near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

About this photo:

Welcome October!! Hard to believe October has arrived, my favourite time of the year when the fall colours will start to appear. I enjoyed a walk with the doggies yesterday morning with some rain showers at beautiful Buntzen Lake. This place is located in Anmore near Vancouver, BC, Canada. I love the moodiness that rainy weather brings, it was so serene and quiet out there. Only 2 other people and a dog crossed my path. 😍🍁🍂🐶 I am so grateful to live near such beautiful places.

This is one of the photos I took there yesterday morning, I hope you like it!

Some information about Buntzen Lake: Buntzen lake used to be named Trout Lake, and was also called Lake Beautiful and then renamed to Buntzen Lake in 1905 at the opening of the tunnel to Coquitlam Lake. In 1903 the lake was used to power Vancouver's first hydroelectric plant "the Buntzen Powerhouse". A tunnel was excavated through Eagle Mountain from Coquitlam Lake to Buntzen Lake. Coquitlam Lake was dammed, and water flowed 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) through the tunnel to Buntzen Lake, and from there, through an outlet at the north end of the lake to two power generating stations on Indian Arm. The first, Powerhouse No 1 built in 1903, and the second 300M away, Powerhouse No 2 built in 1914. Buntzen Lake is also used in another power generating plant, Burrard Generating Station, a gas-powered plant, where water is used to produce steam for the generators.

The area around the lake is managed by BC Hydro as a recreation site and visitors can swim, fish, hike, and boat on the lake. There are many trails in this area. You can walk around the lake, take longer all day hikes into the back country and much more! The recreation area has been a very good example of multiple use, allowing Hikers, Mountain Bikers and Equestrians to use the trails together. Most of the trails extend from the recreation area into Indian Arm Provincial Park. Dogs on a leash are permitted on all trails at Buntzen Lake. There are also two designated off-leash dog areas, one of which includes an off-leash beach area, and an off-leash trail. (Info from Wikipedia)

There’s so much about Conrad I would never have known. I’ve known him for a long time now, we’ve hung out, painted together, made masks, partied. It’s been 3 years and we finally had a full conversation about more than what was in the moment. We went for a long drive down barren roads and so, between the bites of jerky, we told our stories. I focussed on my most recent Kootney journey, him on everything I had missed between the times we’d seen each other. The start how he met the friends that connected us, the time he spent dating another mutual, living in Victoria, working in the film industry, coming back to Mission, and freelancing.

I learnt a lot. Most of it, now that I know, had slipped past despite being obvious. I suppose when I met him our interactions were mostly in passing. Group conversations, talking about interests like music, art, and film, words overheard at parties. It was curious to learn someone I already thought I knew. His relationships past, how he knew my friends, how we met, who he’d seen, who he’s seeing. As much as you may know someone, just think about how many memories you have. Everyone has that. There’s no way to scope what anyone else experiences. You can explain it, but to know it and feel it is something rare, fleeting at best, and to even begin to understand is something else entirely. For a moment I felt I understood a bit of what Conrad was telling me. It was a moment of bonding. I’m glad for this project. I’m glad to have gone exploring with him. I’m glad to know I’ll be able to share these moments with others. I’ll be glad to know I’ve hopefully done or will do for someone else as well.
