I missed the tulip festival but this time I am not going to miss the sunflower festival. Last weekend was a great opportunity to go to Chilliwack for a quick roadtrip.

I find the sunflowers by this time are pretty much towards the end as many sunflowers were dead or dying. Since this is the second last week of the festival, quite a lot of people came to take this opportunity to do some selfies with these beautiful flowers.

Location: Chilliwack Sunflower Festival, BC

Located between the Middle and Upper lakes

British Columbia's Okanagan region is best known for it's wine. Us rail fans however know it best for the Kettle Valley Railway. 10 miles of the infamous railway is now preserved in Summerland, BC. It's always a highlight of the summer to visit locomotive #3716 in wine and steam country.

Salmon Glacier

The 5th largest glacier in North America and the world’s largest road accessible glacier is a remnant of that last great age of glaciers; the Fraser Glaciation period.

Located just north of Stewart and only accessible by driving through Hyder, Alaska. You will drive through Hyder at sea level and then the road quickly climbs and heads back into B.C. The road was originally built for Granduc Mines. There are several gold mines along the route, some long ago shut down with others going full tilt.

Driving through remnants of avalanches and slides from the latest storm, it is not a road for the faint of heart. Shear cliffs down one side that are not forgiving if such an accident were to happen to put you over the edge.

Going from the first view point of the glacier, known as the ‘toe of the glacier’ to the summit viewpoint at 3370 ft the landscape drastically changes. The trees at the summit are of the alpine variety, very stunted and unusual growth. And of course snow drifts and hundreds of waterfalls. Absolutely stunning surroundings the whole 37km drive.

141 m (463 ft), Murtle River flows into the canyon created from years ago volcanic activity, it is the 4th largest waterfall in Canada.

Located in Wells Gray Provincial Park - this waterfall was one of the reasons for the creation of Wells Gray Park in 1939.

Named after the Honourable Arthur Wellsley Gray, Minister of Lands for British Columbia from 1933 to 1941.

One of the many popular streets to capture the beautiful blossoms in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Happy Easter to all of you!

About this photo: Yay, my first blossom encounter is a fact! The blossoms are a little bit later this year, I am guessing because we had a late cold spell and a dump of snow at the end of February.

The street near the Akali Singh Sikh Temple in Vancouver are always some of the first blossoms to bloom. When I got there I had the street all to myself for a little while. I wandered up and down the street, took some photos, this one being one of them and by the time I left there were several people wandering the street to take photos.

The Cherry Blossom Festival officially kicked off on April 1, 2023. There are many different varieties to be found in Vancouver and we usually get to enjoy cherry blossoms from the end of March until the end of April.

Vancouver’s history with cherry blossoms dates back to the 1930s, when the Japanese cities of Kobe and Yokohama donated 500 trees to plant at the Japanese Canadian War Memorial in Stanley Park to honour Japanese Canadians who served in the First World War. In 1958, another 300 trees were donated by the Japanese consul. These beautiful trees became so popular that the park board planted more and more. Now you can find trees with cherry blossoms all over Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Some information of Vancouver:Vancouver is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Vancouver is Canada's third largest city and is located by the Pacific Ocean on a peninsula surrounded by water and in the distance there are the mountains. Vancouver is considered a pretty clean and safe city with a great variety of shops, museums, theatre, outdoor activities (hiking, walking, kayaking, sailing, skiing on the local mountains in the winter) and more. Walking around Stanley Park is a favourite thing to do for tourist and locals alike. This beautiful park extends from the city centre of Vancouver almost to the North Shore. With wonderful views of the mountains and the ocean around every corner, downtown Vancouver is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Walk along Robson Street, the most popular shopping street. Experience Chinatown with the different kinds of building and stores, walk on the beaches of English Bay and the seawall of Stanley Park, enjoy a walk in Gastown with the old steam clock and the many gift shops.

Look out for some Hollywood film sets as Vancouver is used for many big Hollywood movies and shows. That's why you might hear that Vancouver is called "Hollywood North". Here are some examples of shows and movies that were/are filmed here: "Dead Pool", "Skyscraper", "The X-Files", "Dark Angel", "Stargate-SG1", "The 6th Day", "Kiss of the Dragon", "Small Ville" and many more. Then there is also the Canada Place, the stadiums, the Harbour Lookout, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Science World, the Vancouver Art Gallery and much more! All of these attractions are located within minutes from the city centre.

Vancouver is also popular in the winter for winter activities. There are 3 local mountains where you can do any type of winter sport. There is Grouse Mountain, most famous for it's stunning views over the city and fresh powder snow. Grouse Mountain is accessible by skyride...this is a big airtram that will take you up to the top of the mountain. Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain are famous too and you also get wonderful views from the top of these mountains. As you can see...Vancouver has lots to offer. The Winter Olympics were held here in 2010 as well.

Another shot of the grizzly bear family. This time with mom and a cub standing.

Spent a night at E. C. Manning Provincial Park in BC. Had a long hike the night before up to the viewpoint. My friend and I was trying to drive uphill on this snowy road condition. And we decided to park the car half way and hike up to the viewpoint. Was a 10.5 km in total round trip. Not so bad...? Guess you can say it's nothing if you are an experienced hiker! grin emoticon

Anyway... after the long hike, we drove back to the parking lot by Lightning Lake around 2:30am. Set up my tent on the snow and had a few hours of sleep. Woke up right before sunrise time and just enough time to get to this location. Hope you enjoy it!

Rennell Sound, Queen Charlotte islands/Haida Gwaii

A pair of eagles flew into our camp site while we were down in Rennell Sound - I think they were hoping we were fishermen with leftovers

I always thought that this place is just called Whytecliff Park as a whole including the beach, and playground area behind. But after looking at it on google map today and found out the island you see in the middle is called Whyte Islet Park on its own. And it can only be reach during low tide. The rocks on the right will connect all the way to the island when the tide is low.

And if you are trying to reach the island when it is low, make sure you watch for the tide to go back up. Otherwise, you'll have to swim back to the shore!! :)

Sun just set on the right side painted some color on the clouds above.

Thanks for viewing!

"Singing in the rain"

These very vocal and neat looking birds were all over the area we were exploring today on the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC. Such bright legs and feet, couldn't help not watching them for some time. Very social birds also.

This evening's moonrise over English Bay Beach and the English Bay Bathhouse. The Supermoon Blood Wolf Moon 2019 peeks out from behind Mt. Seymour in North Vancouver. Captured from Kitsilano, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ January 20, 2019 🌚

Moon names are getting a bit out of hand these days... don't you think?

Side Note 📃 The tallest building centered in this photo is the Empire Landmark (aka Sheraton Landmark) which is slowly being disassembled (and not by that crane) Anyone notice the black glass top with the revolving restaurant is missing?

Sometimes you have to get right into the very cold river to get the image that you are envisioning - setting up a tripod amongst slippery cold underwater rocks really does have a payoff.

The rare Purple Martin, a member of the swallow family return from South America in late April every year. During the winter they soak up the sun east of the Andes in Columbia, Bolivia and Brazil.

OASES (Organization Advocating Sanctuary for Endangered Species) has contributed funds and labour for adding and maintaining nest boxes at the Tod Inlet colony for a number of years.

In 1985, there were 5 breeding pairs of western purple martins left in the wild, now there are nearly a 1000 thanks to those nest boxes located in various safe locations.

The nest boxes are located very high up on pilings to ensure that the Purple Martins have a safe location away from land predators.
