I was trying to capture the beautiful rose petals during sunset time when my sight was drawn towards a harmless, standstill fly sitting on the rose petal. Light was dim as its winter evening in this side of Globe. I used my high ISO setting (1600) to keep a good enough Shutter Speed (1/160). I could take 2-3 shots, hand-held, before it flew

Some technical details of Fly as an Insect

Flies are insects of the order Diptera (from the Greek di = two, and ptera = wings). Their most obvious distinction from other orders of insects is that a typical fly possesses a pair of flight wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax. (Some species of flies are exceptional in that they are secondarily flightless). The only other order of insects bearing two true, functional wings plus any form of halteres are the Strepsiptera, and in contrast to the flies, the Strepsiptera bear their halteres on the mesothorax and their flight wings on the metathorax.

The Diptera comprise a large order, containing an estimated 240,000 species of mosquitoes, gnats, midges and others, although under half of these (about 120,000 species) have been described. It is one of the major insect orders both in terms of ecological and human (medical and economic) importance. The Diptera, in particular the mosquitoes (Culicidae), are of great importance as disease transmitters, acting as vectors for malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, encephalitis and other infectious diseases.

Diptera derive from Mecoptera or a strictly related group. The first true dipterans known are from the Middle Triassic (around 240 million years ago), and they became widespread during the Middle and Late Triassic

A few hummingbirds are still hanging around, which was a surprise to me. I checked out Google and found out that a type called Anna's will stay around all winter if you keep them fed. So I have my trusty feeders full and will keep a couple extras in the house to trade out if they freeze. They are fighting like crazy and it seems there is one bully in the crowd that chases them all off. This is the baby one of the group, and I don't see him getting a sip in very often, so I have decided to hang a few feeders in the front of the house to maybe draw part of the crowd up front so nobody starves.

This summer my friend and I decided to just drive around see if we'd find anything interesting to photograph. We were just going along when we came across this random castle and I knew I had to stop and get a picture. Instead of just taking a simple picture of it I decided to make it a little "unique" by creating a filter using my sunglasses. I felt like it would give it the feeling as if you were seeing the castle from my point of view.

Hidimbi Devi Temple, also known variously as the Hadimba Temple,is located in Manāli,a hill station in the State of Himāchal Pradesh in north India. It is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, sister of Hidimba, who was a character in the Indian epic, Mahābhārata. The temple is surrounded by a cedar forest at the foot of the Himālayas. The sanctuary is built over a huge rock jutting out of the ground, which was worshiped as an image of the deity. The structure was built in 1553.

The Hidimba Devi temple is built around a cave where Hidimba performed mediatation. Hidimba was supposed to live here with her brother Hidimb, and not much is known about their parents. Born in the Rakshas family, Hidimba vowed to marry one who would defeat her brother Hidimb, who was supposed to be very brave and fearless. During the Pandava's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandava exile, when they visited Manali Bhima, one of the five Pandvas, killed Hidimb. Thus, Hidimba married Bhima, and gave birth to their son Ghatotkacha.

The Hidimbi Devi Temple has intricately carved wooden doors and a 24 meters tall wooden "shikhar" or tower above the sanctuary. The tower consists of three square roofs covered with timber tiles and a fourth brass cone-shaped roof at the top. The earth goddess Durga forms the theme of the main door carvings. The temple base is made out of whitewashed, mud-covered stonework. An enormous rock occupies the inside of the temple, only a 7.5 cm (3 inch) tall brass image representing goddess Hidimbi Devi. A rope hangs down in front of the rock, and according to a legend,in bygone days religious zealots would tie the hands of "sinners" by the rope and then swing them against the rock.

About 70 metres away from the temple, there is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Hidimbi's son, Ghatotkacha who was born after she married Bhima. The most surprising feature of the temple or what believers could call the most reassuring feature of the temple is the fact that inside the temple the imprint of the feet of the Goddess carved on a block of stone are worshipped and if you goto Google Satellite and zoom into the area where the temple is located, you can clearly see the imprint of a giant foot spanning across the valley in the area near the temple.

The Indian epic Mahabharata narrates that Pāndavas stayed in Himachal during their exile. In Manali, a strongest person named Hidimba,a brother of Hidimdi, attacked them, and in the ensuing fight,Bhima, the strongest Pandav, killed him. Bhima and Hidimba's sister, Hidimbi, then got married and had a son, Ghatotkacha, (who later proved to be a great warrior in the war against Kauravas). When Bhima and his brothers returned from exile, Hidimbi did not accompany him,but stayed back and did tapasyā (a combination of meditation, prayer, and penance) so as to eventually attain the status of a goddess.

I have been deliberately trying to avoid shots of the 'wheel of Nottingham' or 'Nottingham Eye' this year to thhe extent that I even missed light night as last years was dissappointing from the previous one and compared to that of Sheffield.......... come on City Council come up with something interesting next time.

Anyway........ as I was walking through the square the position of the sun and number of people was creating some superb shadow work.......... so I used the wheel as the shield for the sun and the back drop and waited....... waited until the right shadows were in shot (some fifteen minutes later and I get the shot I wanted!).

Explore #107 Thanks friends!

Hi friends, please pray for Levi, my grandson. He had very bad asthma today and turned blue. The ambulance, 5 paramedics, and 5 police caars came today.....I'm thankful for the county I live it, they responded quickly and he was breathing better. His mom has him at the doctor right now. The pollen is really making him sick.

Thank you for your prayers!

I shot this this morning when he was feeling well. I loved the light on his back....I never intended to upload this one but it seemed a good way to request prayer!

I have passed by these classic red stools outside "D's Diner" for over two years now, always meaning to stop. Well, I finally did. This is one of those great old diners that just screams the 50's. Can't you just picture the girls in their pink poodle skirts and angora sweaters, perched on these stools, sipping malteds?

THIS is Americana at it's finest.

Long live the diner.
