I stopped in at an east end Toronto street festival build around displaying a variety of show cars including classics, muscle cars, hot rods, and tuners. (www.wheelsonthedanforth.com) While I was investigating some of the impressive metal, I saw this beautiful retro woman with an impressive hairdo. She was carrying a parasol and I couldn’t resist approaching her and asking for a photo. She happily agreed to my request. Meet Suzy Q.
We were in a rather uninspiring location – the parking lot of a suburban strip mall – in full sun. Suzy Q agreed to step around the corner of the hamburger joint where there was a slice of shade from the building and I tried to make the best of it and finished with a couple of backlit photos facing into the strong afternoon sun. I could have used a reflector or some fill flash, but didn’t have either with me.
Photos taken, I checked out my assumption that Suzy Q was involved in the event and she explained that she had co-organized and judged a 50s beauty pageant. It was the first time that the car show has had a beauty pageant and she said it was a smashing success and would likely become an annual event. She was sorry to hear that I had missed it and so was I.
When I explained my Human Family photo project, Suzy immediately agreed to be in the project so we talked for a few more minutes. She was very friendly and generous with her time as we chatted on the parking lot. When I asked how long it took her to create the amazing retro hairstyle she surprised me by saying “Just about 15 minutes.” “15 minutes?” I exclaimed. “I’m really surprised. I would have thought hours. She smiled and said “I have an advantage: I’m a hair stylist.” (Her salon can be found on Facebook under Pretty in Style.)
In addition to being a stylist, Suzy is a professional 50s pinup model. When I invited her to share a message with the project, she thought for a brief moment and said “Women should empower other women. It used to be that way in the past, but it doesn’t seem to be any more.” Her advice is “Be the woman who tells the other girl when she has lipstick on her teeth.” We shared a laugh but I thought it was a great message and behind the humor was a strong belief in empowerment.
Thanks Suzy, for taking a few minutes to meet and for participating in my Human Family project on Flickr. Congratulations on the success of the pageant. Perhaps I will arrive at the car show earlier next year and get to see the pageant. It sounds like a lot of fun.
This is my 851st submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.

A vintage 1655 Explorer II captured with a background image of a 216570, the current Explorer II. It is Rolex's homage/update to this classic.
Reference 1655 was first introduced in 1971 and produced until 1984. It is powered by the 26-jewel caliber 1575 movement.
The 1655 was not a popular watch model and fewer of them were made and sold than other Rolex sports models. This relative rarity and its now famous orange hand has made it a desirable collectors watch.
On its 40th anniversary in 2011, Rolex reintroduced the famous 'orange hand' to the line.

We were told about a trophy fishing lake in Manitoba, where the browns are huge. Well yes indeed they are.
We each caught the biggest brown trout for us so far but not without some drama.
No not to the fish, even though they fought like a freight train and were so strong as to launch themselves up for a hug and then self release.
No, the drama was with the weather. We arrived with some cloudy conditions and amazing fishing. So what if the clouds got fuller and darker and wetter, and downpoured for the 3 days we stayed? So what if our lakeside campsite became a lake? With the best trophy fishing we've had in a long long long time, we endured and fished. Until we couldn't. Until the heavens opened for too long and you couldn't see the lake for the storm.
Time to go, and apparently we picked the exact right time to leave, as Manitoba Floods to this area were so intense that a state of emergency was declared.
For us, with amazing fishing and trophy size, it was a state of elation.

Took an off-road ride through Mammoth to explore some hot springs. Beautiful place! Wouldn't mind going back again.
Cosplayer: one of my cosplay buddies, Stabitha Stabs in her gender-bend version of DC Comics' "Booster Gold." I love the little "Skeets" she has on her shoulder!

Really pleased to find out this made Explore.
A landscape photographer feels the need to explore new places to satisfy his line of continuity. When he finds it, he begins a process of studying possibilities related to the climate, the most interesting events of the day to complement them, the position of the sun according to its orientation, etc... And if the sea is part of this, the state of the tides and the size of the waves. This place is an example, still in the study phase. At the moment with a sunrise between the golden and blue hours.
Wow! I did not expect this to be featured on Flickr's Explore (Feb. 18, 2025). Thanks for all the love, folks!
I do not know who the cosplayer is. Can anyone help me ID her? If I'm not mistaken, she was hanging around the "Marvel Rivals" group on Saturday afternoon at Katsucon 2025.
A couple of my on-line friends ID'ed her. This is Madz
