Before completing a year in government, he had to face the Chillán earthquake and the so-called "Ariostazo." During his mandate, he promoted a strong industrialization process, for which he founded the Production Development Corporation (Corfo) as part of an ambitious economic development plan that contemplated the construction of electrical and steel plants, oil exploitation, support for the manufacturing industry and the mechanization of agriculture. Regarding this last issue, despite having proposed in his book The Agrarian Problem (1929) that the State should redistribute unproductive lands and that its own government program contemplated reform agrarian, which was never carried out in these years.
In accordance with his campaign slogan, another fundamental axis of his administration was the expansion of primary education and the creation of the "General Secretariat for the Defense of the Race and Use of Free Hours." His government would be the first of the three successive administrations known as "radical governments" that would exist in the country until 1952. Of these, his was the only one to remain in the popular memory of the 20th century, by leading the Popular Front and carrying out a government that promoted industrialization and education at the service of popular interests.
His government also stood out for developing an active cultural policy. In 1939 he promoted the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Gabriela Mistral, with whom he had a close friendship, although she only obtained it in 1945. He also ordered the preparation of a bill to create the National Prize for Literature, which was finally promulgated in 1942. .
Popularly known as Don Tinto or the Pancake Minister, due to his ties to the wine industry, and as The President of the Poor.
Tuberculosis prevented him from finishing his term, dying halfway through it. After his death, the figure of the president was consolidated in the popular imagination through his widow Juana Aguirre Luco, who continued to play an active social role that helped enhance her own figure and that of her husband, as exponents of a popular policy. put at the service of the most dispossessed.
In his honor, an Antarctic base was founded and the old sector of Ochagavía (south of Santiago) gave rise to a Department6 with his name that included the current commune of Pedro Aguirre Cerda and other municipalities in the southern sector of Santiago. Likewise, a railway station was named after him.

Our investigations into non-recent child sexual exploitation are ramping up with five suspects arrested in relation to reports of abuse in Oldham between 2011 and 2014.
Detectives in our dedicated CSE Major Incident Team have been working closely with the survivors at the centre of these cases, gathering evidence and intelligence, with unwavering determination to bring child abusers to justice.
This action involved the execution of five warrants simultaneously at addresses in Oldham, Tameside, and Manchester.
These offences follow a disclosure from an Oldham survivor that forms part of a complex and wide-ranging investigation codenamed ‘Operation Sherwood’ which draws on our effective partnership with Oldham Council.
We have previously arrested six suspects as part of this investigation. They were placed on police bail with significant child protection conditions to adhere to, whilst our investigation continues.
The five men arrested this morning remain in custody for questioning.
The suspects are not necessarily all linked, but they collectively relate to four survivors we are supporting.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, lead for Protecting Vulnerable People, said: “The survivors at the centre of these cases have placed their trust in the GMP of today, and have the confidence to support prosecutions, which we hold to the highest regard.
“We are working closely with them, while they receive tailored support from partnership agencies, moving forward at a pace and in a manner that is right for them.
“Our investigative teams are piecing together all the evidence and taking robust action as soon as we can. Bringing child abusers to justice is why our detectives work so tirelessly day-in day-out. It’s essential we get this right and build strong case files to present the best possible case in court.
“We are now making significant strides in our pursuit and activity is only going to continue ramping up. We will not allow time to be a barrier to justice and any abusers in Oldham or beyond should be warned that we are coming for them.”

In Truro, Cornwall group Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE) staged a major vigil outside the city’s cathedral in support of IARD, to raise awareness of the suffering caused to billions of animals by factory farming and animal experiments. SAFE highlighted how the consumption of animal products is destroying the environment, damaging human health, as well as causing untold suffering and death to animals. In the season of peace and goodwill, they asked the public to question the unnecessary sacrifice of millions of animals for Christmas dinners. With the support of the Lush store in Truro, SAFE used the vigil to advocate a meat-free diet and boycotting animal-testing companies.

Romance scams, where fraudsters exploit emotional connections for financial gain, continue to ruin people who are tricked into investing in fake crypto websites and apps.
Recent raids on online gambling operations in Cambodia have unveiled the scale of this problem, with centres housing 100 to 150 individuals engaged in fraudulent activities.
Cybercrime’s complex nature calls for a need for all parties involved —police, prosecutors, and judges— to work together to ensure that evidence is preserved and presented effectively.
