Mount Rushmore National Memorial is centered on a colossal sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the sculpture's design and oversaw the project's execution from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son Lincoln Borglum. The sculpture features the 60-foot (18 m) heads of Presidents George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), as recommended by Borglum. The four presidents were chosen to represent the nation's birth, growth, development, and preservation, respectively. The memorial park covers 1,278 acres (2.00 sq mi; 5.17 km2) and the actual mountain has an elevation of 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. (Ref. Wikipedia)
The Bridge of Sighs.
From the splendor of council halls, you plunge into the dungeons.
Where CASANOVA conceived and planned her daring escape, cells were unhealthy.
It has this name because of the sighs of the prisoners, who took one last look at freedom before torture or execution. So says the legend.

The special sauce of Second Life is that it helps us to feel things. Sometimes it is the tender touch of another human even when they are thousands of miles away. Other times it is the beauty of a song or a work of art that allows us to see into the hearts and minds of artists. Without the pathway to our sometimes unreachable emotions, SL would just be another video game.
Thankfully we have sims like this one to help us listen to the stories in the wind.
Thank you ARCħEŦҰPE11. I can't keep up with your latest name but I will always find a way to keep up with your art. This one poked at one of the hidden places in my heart I keep under lock and key.

The castle was built by the Venetians in the early 13th c entury. It is among the largest castles in the Mediterranean area. At the south edge of the castle a fortified islet floats. Bourtzi, as it is called, a prison and place of executions during the Turkish Occupation, was built in 1500 and is connected to the Sea Gate of the castle with a paved tiny road.
A basilica is a church with an ordinary roof that does not have a domed shape. It is such a building, built in the X century, located on the main square of the city.
When Georgia became a Christian country, mass executions of priests and adherents of paganism took place on the territory. At the same time, temples were rebuilt in the church, leaving no chance for another religion. From the largest building where the pagans worshiped their gods, they made a three-nave Christian basilica. But the churches did not stand for a long time and by now have already been destroyed.
Uplistsuli in translation from Georgian means "Church of the Prince." The uniqueness of the temple lies in the fact that it was built in a purely Georgian style: the side rooms from the main are separated by walls, not columns.
Near Uplistsuli you can see the ruins of the basilica, defeated in the era of resistance to Christianity.
The gallows was erected in 1597 instead of a wooden gallows. The number of people executed is unclear, but there are some indications that relatively few people died there, which is also due to the relatively liberal jurisprudence of the Count House of Erbach. Only one execution in 1746 is documented in the church records, which is considered certain. Johann Adam Beisel from Unter-Sensbach was hanged for theft and adultery. [2] According to the inscription on a memorial stone next to the gallows, the "last execution in 1804, a gypsy woman for stealing a chicken and two loaves of bread" should have taken placeThree red sandstone columns about five meters high were set up so that they form the corners of an equilateral triangle. They carry three crossbars arranged in a triangle, which is why the place of execution is also known as the so-called "three-sleeper gallows". The gallows served the high court of the Oberzent under the rule of the Counts of Erbach; In 1806 they were deprived of their jurisdiction by Napoleonic law, which also ended the right to impose the death penalty. Europe, The Netherlands, Overijssel, Twente, Hengelo, Stationsplein, Helical holes sculpture (Rinus Roelofs) (slightly cut)
When you leave Hengelo station, there are two eye-catching groups of sculptures at the Stationsplein. The one on the right is a group of giant, playful bears and the one on the left consists of 8 abstract Rinus Roelfs sculptures. They are part of his 'helical holes' series and made of cast iron, sandblasted aluminium, powder-coated metal (the one on display here), and ‘raw' corten steel.
Thru these materials, the sculptures are intertwined with the past of the ‘metal city’ of Hengelo. Because of their mathematical 'look' and high-tech execution, the series shouts CAD-CAM (the artist crafted the CAD part - the program- himself), so they are connected to modern technology too.
Rinus Roelofs’ work and its underlying concepts are based on complex mathematical and geometric principles. This is no coincidence, he studied applied mathematics before going to art school. He has exhibited in science museums around the world and (of course) in the Escher museum in The Hague.

The Town of Ramsgate public house is located at the centre of the ancient hamlet of Wapping in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It features in several books about London inns where it is rated as "a notable specimen of a waterman's tavern."
Although the present building dates back to 1758, the National Monuments Record have stated that it was constructed on earlier foundations.
The notorious Judge Jeffreys was caught outside the ale house as he tried to escape disguised as a sailor on a collier bound for Hamburg after the Glorious Revolution, in the same year, which overthrew King James II. Presiding over the Bloody Assizes after Monmouth’s unsuccessful rebellion against James II, Judge Jeffreys had taken great pleasure in sending hundreds to their execution, and in abusing their attorney’s, which was a costly mistake as one of them recognised him resulting in his capture!
Ramsgate harbour of 1850 features in the pub sign and is also etched on the mirror near the entrance to the pub.
As for the Wapping Old Stairs next door, they also have a bloody history. If you visit during low tide, you can still see the post to which condemned pirates were chained to drown as the tide rose. The Stairs were made famous in Rawlinson’s cartoon and Dibden’s poems. John Banks came here, with Captain Bligh to inspect the Bounty before purchasing it for the ill-fated voyage to Tahiti.

15th Century English Farming Abstract Art This image presents an abstract view of 15th-century English farming, focusing on stylized diggers and the earth. It features complementary colors and fine details in a vibrant mosaic-like texture. Created by Diney on Oct 21, 2025 using the HiDream I1 Dev AI image generator model.
(The original Diggers were a radical group of agrarian communists in England who emerged in 1649, following the execution of King Charles I. Led by Gerrard Winstanley and William Everard, they attempted to cultivate common land as a "common treasury for all" and create egalitarian rural communities, believing that the earth was for everyone and that private property and class hierarchy were wrong. Harassed by local landowners and authorities, the Diggers were dispersed by early 1650.)

The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty, now in Uzbekistan. The name Rēgistan means "Sandy place" or "desert" in Persian.
The Registan was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis - and a place of public executions. It is framed by three madrasahs (Islamic schools) of distinctive Islamic architecture.
The three madrasahs of the Registan are: the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) and the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning school.
The Castello di San Giorgio is part of the Ducal palace of Mantua. It is a moated rectangular castle, each of which's four corners has a large tower and the moat is crossed by three drawbridges.
It was built between 1395 and 1406 on the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Capo di Bove for Francesco I Gonzaga, to designs by Bartolino da Novara. Ludovico III Gonzaga gave over his rooms in the "Corte Vecchia" to pope Pius II for the Council of Mantua in 1459 - that year, he commissioned Luca Fancelli to rebuild the castle as a palazzo rather than as a defensible castle. He also commissioned the frescoes of the castle Camera degli Sposi. In 1490 the castle became the site of the studiolo of Isabella d'Este, remaining there until she moved it to the "Corte Vecchia" in 1519-1522. In 1496 the condottiero Paolo Vitelli was captured by Francesco II and imprisoned in the castle. It remained the main Gonzaga residence for around a century until Guglielmo Gonzaga moved his apartments to the rebuilt "Corte Vecchia".
In 1810 the Tyrolean fighter Andreas Hofer was imprisoned in the castle before his execution by the Kingdom of Italy. Mantua became part of the Austrian Empire in 1814 and from 1815 it was a maximum security prison for the Empire's political opponents, such as the Belfiore martyrs from 1852 onwards. Others pro-Risorgimento figures imprisoned there included Ciro Menotti and Teresa Arrivabene. The building's structure was damaged by the 2012 Emilia earthquake.

Standing on a rocky promontory jutting out into Loch Assynt, Ardvreck Castle is a ruined building dating from the 16th century. It is thought to have been constructed around 1590 by the Clan MacLeod family who owned Assynt and the surrounding area from the 13th century onwards.
The royalist Marquis of Montrose, Cromwell's most famous ennemy, was captured and held there in 1650 before being transported to Edinburgh for trial and execution.
The castle was then attacked and captured by the Clan MacKenzie in 1672. In 1726 they constructed a more modern manor house nearby, called Calda House, which burned down under mysterious circumstances one night in 1737.

Ginza ( 銀座 [ɡindza]) is a district of Chūō, Tokyo, located south of Yaesu and Kyōbashi, west of Tsukiji, east of Yūrakuchō and Uchisaiwaichō, and north of Shinbashi. It is a popular upscale shopping area of Tokyo, with numerous internationally renowned department stores, boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses located in its vicinity. It is considered to be one of the most expensive, elegant, and luxurious streets in the world.
Ginza was a part of the old Kyobashi ward of Tokyo City, which, together with Nihonbashi and Kanda, formed the core of Shitamachi, the original downtown center of Edo (Tokyo).
Ginza was built upon a former swamp that was filled in during the 16th century. The name Ginza comes after the establishment of a silver-coin mint established there in 1612, during the Edo period.
After a devastating fire in 1872 burned down most of the area, the Meiji government designated the Ginza area as a "model of modernization." The government planned the construction of fireproof brick buildings and larger, better streets connecting Shimbashi Station all the way to the foreign concession in Tsukiji.
Soon after the fire, redevelopment schemes were prepared by Colin Alexander McVean a chief surveyor of the Public Works under direction of Yamao Yozo, but execution designs were provided by the Irish-born engineer Thomas Waters; the Bureau of Construction of the Ministry of Finance was in charge of construction. In the following year, a Western-style shopping promenade on the street from the Shinbashi bridge to the Kyōbashi bridge in the southwestern part of Chūō with two- and three-story Georgian brick buildings was completed.
These "bricktown" buildings were initially offered for sale and later were leased, but the high rent prevented many of them from being permanently occupied. Moreover, the construction was not adapted to the climate, and the bold design contrasted the traditional Japanese notion of home construction. The new Ginza was not popular with visiting foreigners, who were looking for a more Edo-styled city. Isabella Bird visited in 1878 and in 1880 implied that Ginza was less like an Oriental city than like the outskirts of Chicago or Melbourne. Philip Terry, the English writer of tour guides, likened it to Broadway, not in a positive sense.
Nevertheless, the area flourished as a symbol of "civilization and enlightenment" thanks to the presence of newspapers and magazine companies, which helped spread the latest trends of the day. The area was also known for its window displays, an example of modern marketing techniques. Everyone visited so the custom of "killing time in Ginza" developed strongly between the two world wars.
Most of these European-style buildings disappeared, but some older buildings still remain, most famously the Wakō building with the now-iconic Hattori Clock Tower. The building and the clock tower were originally built by Kintarō Hattori, the founder of Seiko.
Its recent history has seen it as a prominent outpost of Western luxury shops. Ginza is a popular destination on weekends, when the main north-south artery is closed to traffic since the 1960s, under governor Ryokichi Minobe.
Many leading fashion houses' flagship stores are located here, in the area with the highest concentration of Western shops in Tokyo. It is one of two locations in Tokyo considered by Chevalier and Mazzalovo to be the best locations for a luxury goods store. Prominent high-end retailers include the American company Carolina Herrera New York, French companies Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent, Italian company Gucci and Austrian brands Swarovski and Riedel.
Flagship electronic retail stores like the Sony showroom (which closed in 2017 and new building would open in 2022) and the Apple Store are also here (Ginza 2 chome). The electronics company, Ricoh is headquartered in the Ricoh Building in Ginza. The neighborhood is a major shopping district. It is home to Wako department store, which is located in a building dating from 1894. The building has a clock tower. There are many department stores in the area, including Hankyu, Seibu, and Matsuya, in which there are many shops: grocery stores, restaurants, women and men clothes, sportswear, and jewellers etc. There are also art galleries. Kabuki-za is the theater for kabuki, one of Japanese traditional playing, and locates on between Ginza and Tsukiji. The building was opened in 1889 and has been reconstructed several times because of war and fire. The present building was built in 2013.
Each Saturday and Sunday, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., the main street through Ginza is closed off to road traffic, allowing people to walk freely. This is called Hokōsha Tengoku (歩行者天国) or Hokoten for short, literally meaning "pedestrian heaven". There are some people who do street performance such as magic and playing instruments. As a famous photo spot, some cats sleep on signs, where people can put their own cats onto these signs. The location where cats are is different depending on the date.

This ancient Roman Amphitheatre was built in the 2nd century AD, it was was half carved in the rock, while the rest was built in local white limestone, with a façade surpassing 20 m in height. It housed fights between men and animals, of gladiators and other specialized fighters recruited in and outside Sardinia. It was also the seat of public executions. It could house up to 10,000 spectators, some one third of the Roman Caralis.
The amphitheatre was no longer in use starting from the 5th century AD and was subsequently used as a free stone quarry. It is now used for musical presentations, which required the construction of a structure whose presence has raised criticism owing to its size.

King Bart the Odiferous was royally upset that his well-planned wedding was so terribly interrupted. But there was a bright side to his misfortunes. In the pandemonium of the ruined ceremony, his soldiers had managed to capture a single forester outlaw! What luck! King Bart's favorite pastime was watching the executions, and he certainly wasn't going to miss this one. Unfortunately for the king, the rascally foresters don't take too kindly to their comrades being beheaded, and it seems as if they are about to foil his majesty's well-laid plans once again...
Ryan was kind enough to send Steven and I some of his new Executioner pieces, so obviously we had to build a cool scene with em! ;)
THFAVAGD!
8th February, 1587, Fotheringhay Castle, England, Mary, Queen of Scots was executed. It was the first "legal" execution of an anointed European monarch.
For the last 19 years she had been in England in what was effectively imprisonment. In October 1586 she had been found guilty of plotting the assassination of Elizabeth I of England, her cousin in what became known as the Babington Plot.
On the morning of her execution she entered the Great Hall, wearing black garments, and told her friends and servants to ‘rejoice rather than weep for that the end of Mary Stuart’s troubles is now come … tell my friends that I die a true woman to my religion, and like a true Scottish woman and a true French woman.’
Mary was disrobed of her black garments revealing an outfit of deep red – the Catholic colour of martyrdom. She then knelt down on a cushion, rested her head on the execution block, as she stretched out her arms she cried out in Latin “Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.”
Her executioner had to take three swings of the axe, the first landed on the back of her head rather than her neck. The second blow was semi-successful in its purpose cutting into her neck. The third completing the severing.
As the executioner lifted Mary’s head he was left holding her wig, whilst her head tumbled onto the stage. The remains revealed the effects of her years as a prisoner with her hair being short and completely grey. To cap off the surprises Mary’s little Skye terrier revealed itself after having his in Mary's skirts, it was now soaked in blood.
Mary, Queen of Scots was 44.
Garfield has had a stay of execution. On the day before I was due to put him to sleep, I had a visit from his owner down the street. He advised me that it would mean a lot to his children to keep the cat alive. After speaking to my wife about the situation, we have now decided to keep Garfield and give him the medical attention and care that he badly needs. I will be getting him de-sexed in the next week or two to try and stop him getting into fights and then get him some other medical attention. 2:32pm, Sunday the 2nd of September, 2018.
One of the many old pubs which line the Grassmarket, a large, open area just below the Castle, at the bottom of the Old Town. The name The Last Drop comes from the fact that public executions were once carried out in this area - in fact some of the lamps hanging inside the pu are suspended by little ropes tied into a hangman's noose!
