Cook's first kettle was a big cast iron affair that sat on the wood burning range. That was nothing! At the opposite end of the range was a monster of a cast iron fountain; big brass spout hanging out over the floor. Don't know what that is? Look it up. There was no plumbed in hot water in those days!
Then came gas, and indoor plumbing. The cast iron kettle was relegated — too slow. Then the fountain went to a museum!
Now the mantra is "electrify everything". Cook's new range is sleek, powered by induction, no stoking required and no indoor emissions. How long will the turquoise kettle last? I'd say its days are numbered too!
That original kitchen had character; atmosphere — soot, grease — that kind of thing. This is all stainless and sterile. If there's a down side, I couldn't revive an abandoned newborn lamb in front of this range. Those were the days!

Mass Central Railroad train PA-2 has reached the end of the line in South Barre, 25 miles from Palmer, with MCER GP38-2 1751 (ex PC 7997 blt. Jun. 1972) and GP9 1749 (ex CO 6199 blt. Dec. 1956) which are dressed in a sharp scheme that mirrors the original Boston and Maine bluebird colors debuted on their GP9 order of 1957.
After pulling up to the end of track where their former Boston and Albany Ware River Line branch ends ignominiously in the woods, they have reversed direction and are backing into the Wildwood Reload. This scene has changed vastly since I last photographed it in 2020 as seen here: flic.kr/p/2kdqPC2 Sadly in early 2022 the nearly 120 year old Barre Wool Combing mill that rose to the right of the train was completely demolished after having sat vacant for decades since being shuttered in 1974.
When Penn Central abandoned half of the old B&A Ware River Branch in 1968 service was maintained to this point, but by 1975 trains no longer came to the village after the mill closed. The new Mass Central that took over the route in 1979 a few years after the state purchased it rarely ventured this far until 1999 when the railroad established the Wildwood Reload on the former mill property. It has proven to be a quite successful transload, warehousing, and distribution point and now trains travel up here three to five times per week.

This picture captures everything we associate with Havana. The imposing government building with its brutalist architecture evokes memories of East Europe and communist countries, while the picture of Che Guevara on its facade is a testament to Cuba's revolutionary past. The almost empty streets suggest a certain quietness that is uncommon in capitals around the world, yet an old American car from the fifties driving around tourists brings a sense of charm and nostalgia to the scene. It's as if time has stood still in Havana, and everything around us is a testament to the city's rich history and culture. To us, Havana is a place of indefinable magic - a city that is timeworn yet magnificent, dilapidated but dignified. It's a place where beauty can be found in the most unexpected places, and where every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered. However, Havana is not without its challenges. It can be both fun and maddeningly frustrating, a city that requires patience and a willingness to adapt to its rhythms and idiosyncrasies. Yet, for those who are willing to embrace its complexities, Havana is a truly unforgettable destination – Havana, Cuba.
