Conrail’s NY7 job is seen running racks from North Yard to Stellantis on the north side of Detroit. To compliment the shot on a somewhat stale branch is a Conrail bucket truck. Though the engines running on conrail may not sport the signature blue, just about everything else here does.

10-12 years of waiting on a list to have a Trabant. Or 40 years of a different kind of waiting that seemed an infinity. 60 years ago, DDR’s motorized dream started to spread all over the streets. And then again, another river of Trabis, along the Berlin Wall, streaming through the Charlie Checkpoint, taking home the East German citizens after a 40 years trip into a dimension where everything was immovable.
Truth is, the Trabant broke through the proverbial wall long before it crossed into West Berlin. Also called a “spark plug with a roof”, the Trabant is a s y m b o l of a nation who knew how to go beyond. Not only was its body built of recycled materials, but it could run on whiskey, cooking oil or virtually whatever else could burn. The main problem with the engine was the smoky exhaust and the pollution it produced. A reunified Germany discovered that this smoky box-shaped car, whose rasping engine emitted noxious clouds of blue exhaust, was impossible to recycle or dispose of because the Duroplast fails to compress, incinerated gives off toxic fumes and leaches chemicals if buried. What has never been a problem for East German engineers was now a problem for German engineers. (Apparently, it can be shredded, mixed with concrete to render the chemicals inert and pressed into building bricks, though has never been accomplished on a significant scale.)
Made of nothing + lots of imagination, the Trabi disappeared in its own smoke, swallowed by progress and history. The Trabi has vanished but it’s more alive than ever, brought back to life by the fans of the cult car, rescued, restored and transformed by the worldwide enthusiasts. Cuz if in the East was cancelled, crushed and rejected, in the West was wanted, valued and accepted.

It was strange yesterday, the sun never broke through and we were shrouded in a cloak of fog which made the day very cold. Luckily the visit from the First Minister and the Deputy First Minister went well, an awe had a great opportunity to raise the profile of the work for the High Brown Fritillary. Everything will be alright is by The Killers, let's hope they will be.
