Every summer I take a week or two vacation to a family cabin in the Whiteshell Provincial park in MB, Canada.
Every year on February 6th, men in Shingu city, Wakayama, carry lit torches as they run down a long flight of steep stone stairs from a shrine into the city. It was my first time to see it. Judging from how tired most of the entrants are, it's a lot harder than it sounds.
I took my tripod but the crowd was such that it just got in the way. So I put the legs together, held my camera over the crowd with it, and used my cable release to take these pics. It worked pretty well I thought!

Every year the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets across the country have a national sailing regatta hosted at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. Before competing at the final event in Kingston, cadets from every region must qualify at the regional regatta to move forward. This year the regional event for British Columbia is hosted at the “South Vancouver Island Cadet Nautical Training Site” in Esquimalt Harbour, and out of the 40 sailors that compete, only 20 can qualify in the Provincial Qualifier so that they may participate in the National Qualifier next spring, and finally the best 8 sailors will be sent to Kingston in the summer to represent the Pacific region.
This year the cadets were met their first day with challenging 15 knot winds, and beautiful sunshine on their last day of sailing sunday with winds at 5-8 knots. Please enjoy the photo album in the link below, photos taken by Vassili Angelblazer.

Every year, the Swiss Air Force shows it's skills. There is a live shooting with F/A 18 and F5 Tiger. You are pretty close to the target and the overflying jets, so it's really impressive!
Every so often, the universe throws together a curious little jam session. People who never met, never shared a stage, never drank from the same bottle and yet somehow, they’re playing the same tune.
Take Jim Morrison our always and forever Lizard King himself. A poet trapped in a rock star’s body, scribbling wild words about love, death, and that strange carnival called America. Now, somewhere along the way, Morrison gets his hands on a book by a Swedish guy, Carl Michael Bellman. Yeah, Bellman, he’s from the 18th century, when men wore wigs and drank their weight in schnapps. He wrote songs about drunks, sailors, and lost souls, all stumbling through Stockholm like they were looking for the next tavern or the next revelation. Sound familiar? Morrison must’ve thought so too, because he left notes all over that book like he was talking back across the centuries.
- A staggering connection had emerged in connection with an auction taking place in London. Various books and notes by Jim Morrison were to be sold, and one of the items was a book by the swedish national poet Carl Michael Bellman. Morrison himself had scribbled notes next to the translated texts.

Now Bellman, he was a poet with a guitar before they called it a guitar. Strindberg, August Strindberg, he picked one up too, though he mostly played with words. Guy was a storm in human form. He wanted to tear down heaven and rebuild it out of broken dreams and bad marriages. You could say Strindberg was Sweden’s first punk, throwing bottles at the establishment, just to hear them shatter.
And then, far from Stockholm and farther still from the Sunset Strip, there’s Emiliano Zapata, the stylish man with that big mustache and the manifesto. He didn’t write poems, but he lived one. ‘Tierra y libertad’ yes that translates to land and liberty. The revolution was his rhythm, the rifle his guitar.
So what do these four have in common? Bellman sang for the lost. Strindberg wrote for the damned. Morrison howled for the free. And Zapata, well, he fought for them all. Different centuries, different languages, same song. The melody’s called defiance and the key is always minor.
So the next time you think poetry don’t matter, remember that sometimes it shows up in the strangest places. In a Swedish tavern, a Mexican battlefield, a Paris hotel room, or even scrawled in the margins of a secondhand book sold in London.
The Red Sox have banners hanging up outside of Fenway Park for every player who is in the hall of fame who spent part of their career with Boston. Carl Yastrzemski is one of the best of them all. He played his entire 23 year career for the Red Sox. His 3308 games played are the most that anyone has ever played in a Red Sox uniform. He was my brother Silas' favorite when we where kids. Silas and I where Sox fans and my other brother Zach and my dad where Yankee fans.Anyway the Yaz was the MVP of the American League in 1967. That year he was the last player to this day to win a triple crown(leading the league in HR,RBI and AVG).In 1967 his league leading totals where .326 avg 44 HR and 121 RBI's and for good measure he also lead the league in runs (112),hits(189)OBP(.418) and SLG%(.622) . For his career he had 3419 hits 1816 runs scored 452 home runs, 1844 RBI's and a lifetime batting average of .285. Truly one of the all time greats,not just for the Sox but in all of baseball.

Whenever we get the chance to visit Tagaytay City, we always make it a point to pass by the Good Shepherd Sisters Convent to buy goodies and sweets. My daughter really likes the Ube Dimples from that place. It is a soft chewy candy made from yam and sprinkled with sugar.
