Didn't see what the name of that ship was, but the island there in the middle is called Hamnholmen! ("Harbour island")

After a day on a bus, from Livingstone to the Lower Zambezi, we arrived at our home for the night, Zambezi Breezers. Upon arriving it was immediately clear where we would be spending our evening. This shot is taken on a deck built out over the banks of the Zambezi.

Sitting and relaxing, as the sun retired, we watched chartered fishing boats make their way back to their respective lodges and locals make their daily commute home by canoe. They all traveled the crocodile and hippo infested waters with the same manner of craft. They were very simple and appeared to be made from one tree trunk. The back-end seemed to always be submerged and while paddling they let their legs dangle over the sides into the water. www.traverseearth.com

What had ignited last evening's odyssey was a brilliant, late-afternoon stroll through the 3 pagodas (sic) park. It would either make or break my trip, a previous traveler had warned, and I accepted the challenge for the former to result.

The three pagodas after which the park is named are only a trifle of an attraction within a huge, meticulously cultivated compound. It is the quintessential Chinese cultural amusement, combining one part real antiquity with three parts contrived historical authenticity. Much to my chagrin, man of the religious edifices on which the park's current crop of structures are modeled were either destroyed by natural disasters or ruined by "historical wars", namely the Cultural Revolution. Regardless, the refurbished pagodas and their entourage of reconstructed temples hold their own in vying for tourist dollars in Dali's ferociously competitive market.

I spent a bank-breaking $121RMB - the cost of a one way bus fare between Kunming and Dali - to enter the attraction and the money was well spent. Not only are there acres and acres of picturesque gardens and prodigious temples which provided plenty of opportunities for me to practice my photography, but the park also has what I consider to be the most immaculate toilets in China (as well it should since the high entrance fee guarantees gleaming facilities, as well as a scant number of visitors who can afford to pay the price to use those sparkling restrooms). Dirty China, this is not! To boot, all of the facilities and attractions are spaced out on the park's massive grid. I had an outstanding workout walking the mile or so from the park's entrance to its rear where the tower overlooking Erhai lake and the mountain is situated...

This evening, my Dad called me and told me to go out on my balcony right away. And for good reason. This scene greeted me. God, I love Santa Fe.

I took three pictures and meshed them to create a panorama. The colors were not enhanced or changed in any way.

It was a very beautiful evening sunset. I told my son to look outside & he looks. Then he says go take a picture. He knows me too well. LOL

Always been fascinated with the different Designer evening gowns parading during Oscars Night (or should we say The Academy Awards) so we tried coming up with some design options if ever we have a celebrity client that will attend the event in the near future. :-)

Forest Hills, Queens, NYC

September 17, 2010

It all happened within 5 minutes.... At about quarter to 6, without warning, during the height of the evening rush, the most violent storm in recent memory tore across Staten Island, Brooklyn and central Queens. One tornado, with winds of 80 mph sent rooftops flying in Brooklyn, and a second tornado touched down in Queens, combined with a macroburst with winds in excess of 120mph. There was one tragic fatality, 1,500 trees were lost, 3,000 lightning strikes were counted, and 911 fielded 24,000 calls in the three hours following the storm.

The sky was getting dark, but having heard nothing on the weather forecast, I went out to the supermarket. As I walked back there was near constant thunder and I almost ran to get home, feeling the impending intensity in the air. I hurried up the front walk of our apartment just as the first big drops were falling and by the time I made it upstairs, water was blasting through the windows. Even after I closed them, water was coming THROUGH the air conditioner. You could see nothing outside but a dark-green and grey swirl and it sounded as if someone was punching the glass, trying to get in. The wind seemed to come from everywhere. And then it was suddenly gone.

Almost immediately, the sirens began, and I'm sure many were injured. Very sadly, a woman from Pennsylvania was killed nearby in her car. Our front walkway was barricaded by fallen trees, which was the general scene everywhere. Every block was littered with trees, many of them huge and ancient. A few windows in our building were smashed out. Eerily, there were also a number of shoes and umbrellas laying around- discarded as people ran for cover. In the air was the smell of fire. I must have seen more than 40 damaged cars, and about ten which were completely crushed. Many streets were impassable, and a traffic nightmare quickly ensued- total gridlock, people going the wrong way down streets, pedestrians everywhere, and off-duty cops trying their best to keep the peace. Someone told me it took him one hour to drive two blocks.

The general sense on the street was one of disbelief, as many homebound commuters emerged from the subway totally unaware of what happened, the unique Forest Hills blend of trees and urban-ness mangled out of recognition. As night fell, the scene became more chaotic still, with snarled traffic and constant sirens lasting until well after midnight. Firefighters from other neighborhoods were having trouble navigating the bizarre address system of Queens, and worse, could barely fight through the crowds. I overheard on a police radio that, among other incidents, a woman was going into labor a few blocks away.

Up at Queens Boulevard, a few stores had lost their windows- some had overturned shelves and puddles of water. Many signs were damaged and some teenagers were gleefully carrying a huge green "Yellowstone Blvd" sign that had fallen.

After midnight, there was a bit of peace, but within an hour around 7am, the chaos returned full force. There's a lot of clean-up to be done, and I imagine it will take weeks. All told, however, we are lucky. It is amazing, though sad, that there was only one fatality- that almost everyone managed to stay clear of all the falling trees is miraculous. Far worse things happen all the time around the world. Still, the words on everyone's lips as you walk through the neighborhood today are best summed up by what I heard an elderly woman say in a thick Russian accent: "In my life, I never seen nothing like this"

Gorgeous clouds in the evening sky

One evening in October

When I was 'bout one-third sober

And was taking home a load with manly pride.

My poor feet began to stutter

So I lay down in the gutter

And a pig came up and lay down by my side.

Then we sang 'It's All Fair Weather'

And 'Good Fellows Get Together'

Till a lady passing by was heard to say:

"You can tell a man who boozes

By the company he chooses."

And the pig got up and slowly walked away.

Yes, the pig got up and slowly walked away,

Slowly walked away, slowly walked away.

Yes, the pig got up and he turned and winked at me

As he slowly walked away

Found this little one having an evening stroll in the garden with a trailer full of cuddlies =)

There are LOTS of flowers in this family. Many color variations with many species and subspecies. At this specific location (elevation, exposure) they appear at the apex of their bloom. Long bloom season as I recall seeing some of the first ones a couple months back.
