Hi friends,
I have been on a journey, but not a photographic one. About two weeks ago I had successful open heart surgery to replace a heart valve. I am now biomechanical.
The surgery date was planned. A decision arose – if you knew this image might be the last you share with the living world, what image would you chose?
Why would it even matter though, right? As I sat on my recovery bed in the hospital, reading the book “Essentialism”, I came to the same conclusion I did pre-surgery – photography is one of those few essentials to me, and interacting with my close photographic friends is an important part of that.
I am on the other side now. Under quiet conditions, I can hear my heartbeat through the clicking of my mechanical valve, a reminder of my finite existence. My desire to create is as strong as ever, and I thank you for our journey together.

Though this shot in Augusta has been done many times before, it's definitely worth going to. On a bright fall morning, 261 heads west to Glencoe past the most photographed farm in the state this weekend. The day before we got rained out on at this spot, but the second day was greeted with bright blue skies, perfect for a day of shooting.
Photo taken for the November 15. 2021 Macro Mondays theme: EDC. I'm very much a person who carries stuff...but my folding umbrella is too big for a macro photo, and a handkerchief isn't very interesting to look at so...
Virtually always in my bag (barring security rules): the latest incarnation of my mini Swiss Army knife¹ (I use the scissors more than anything else) and a wooden² comb³.
¹This particular one is a souvenir from a trip to NYC; you might be able to guess when.

With a sudden “crack!” of pyrotechnics, a mockup of NASA’s Orion spacecraft released its grip on a set of cables and began a graceful, deliberate dive toward a pool 14 feet below.
Instead of an Olympic-style feat of athletics, it was a mighty stroke of engineering — and an essential step forward in NASA’s journey to Mars.
Onlookers gathered near the Hydro Impact Basin at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, applauded and cheered. They had just witnessed the simulated water landing of a space capsule, through the use of a 7.2-ton mockup covered with sensors capable of detecting forces that the structure and its astronaut crew would experience.

Lots of food photos were taken this week. Food is not my favourite subject but dark chocolate is definitely one of my favourite food groups. I have some with a cup of coffee daily when we sit down for our evening telly. This is one of several bars of interesting chocolate given by my husband for a valentine. He knows my heart. Unfortunately there wasn't much art to find in it this time.

Okay, this one was a ride (to develop), ..again. Part 7 of the "lost gorge series", in no particular order, but this is still from the 1st 1/3 of the gorge.
Felt kind of ambivalent about the whole thing. For one, I'm pleased that I could 'keep it together', and not totally blow out hightlights and / or shadows.
By the way, these panos are all one exposure in terms of settings, I'd rather spend more time doing some tests (into the bright areas, into the shadows etc. and then find a middle ground based on the histogram) and optimizing things, than mess around during the sequence, that's asking for troubles. It was necessary to do some local developments (top, middle and bottom row came out very different), which I try to avoid and only do if it is promising, cause this escalates quickly with that number of images.
I felt compelled to show it all, but the false-color development got really busy with tons of details and a bit too HDR-y for my taste, but technically it really is even though I did not do any bracketing. I aim at making it look natural though, well as natural as an IR false-color pano can be. I had to stand back for a little bit until I got the courage to crop, which ultimately made the image more digestible, less visually stimulating, highlighting the essential parts that sort of help anchor the eye also, I think.
The stream makes just a slight bend here, most of which you can see in the pano is due to the wide horizontal angle (maybe around 240°) and also due to being in the lower part of the panorama.
