A day spent with friends in London and getting to know the East End and also photographing some old favourites. A 5am start and a 9pm bus home gave plenty of time to wander about.
we're getting away from this town, leaving behind this place that shut us in since birth and before.
(I think this was just over Atlanta leaving the airport for California. I'm currently listening to the brilliant green's song escape as well.)

While hiking w/our Welsh Corgi - Pippa - we spied this trout fisherman in the Chattahoochee River. The outside temps were in the 40's and the river is dam-controlled, so most water flowing downstream is equally chilly; I hope this guy's waders were insulated!

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Maui and enjoy the surf and waterfalls. During my trip, I became mesmerized by the number of abandoned, often burned-out, vehicles there were along the roads and hiking trails. I became transfixed by them, drawn to photograph each one I came across. This Ford Escape was no exception. With the exception of the missing front tire, it appeared as if the owner had parked it under the tree to go on a hike but never returned.
The cold steel of the warehouse doors pressed against Jake's back, mirroring the icy dread creeping through his veins. Jenna, a shadow beside him, ran a hand over the grip of her machine gun, the metallic click a stark counterpoint to the pounding of Joe's heart, audible even in the cavernous space. Tension hung thicker than the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of light slicing through the warehouse doors. Every nerve ending screamed. They were a tableau of desperation, poised on the precipice of escape. Safety's off. The air crackled with unspoken promises of violence, a silent countdown to the chaos that would erupt the moment those doors swung open. The heavy weight of their weapons felt both reassuring and terrifying, a tangible symbol of the fight they were about to face.

The lost valley was found by a mistakenly driven large nail that cracked the rock wall hiding the valley. At first it was only a small waterfall, but then .................
Today in science I learned about the term "Escaping Velocity," which is when you reach the speed at which you leave earth's atmosphere forever. I decided to take a photo inspired by this term, and my interpretation of it, and I'm happy with the result. The sun represents the prospect of exiting earth, such as the "Guiding Light," the character's feet are barely touching the earth to suggest she is jumping, and the fact that you cannot see her face represents the fact that she's leaving forever.

Update 2013JAN10
The Wall Street Journal picked up the story of the Holmes & Walker family in Dunalley Tasmania, January 2013. [0] A quick note from mate, Simon on Facebook, "Quite a familiy portait. Kids can be very courageous and resilient in a crisis. highlights how kids and people react in crisis. They may appear calm at the time, but after the crisis is another story.
Below is a short story of how Shane, his wife and two youngsters survived Black Saturday, huddling together under a wet blanket between two water tanks.
Strathewen 2009
Post fires, 2009 in Strathewen with Moose i ran into Shane at the community centre. We got talking about the fires & where we were on the day (me, 80km away) while he was at his house in Rankins Rd. Rankins Road is half way b/w Bowden Spur and Bald Spur road and not a place to be during a fire. I didn't make much of it till, Then the the Wind Changed was on TV later in the year. You can catch the promo here ~ www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRU7KVl0Oas
There's a bit of film Shane took directly after the fire, panning his hand-held towards what was left of his house and then to the two water tanks, where from beneath a blanket his wife and seven year old and three year old survived. In the film it showed the problems these youngsters faced & the most telling the older of the two chewing her parents out for not getting them out of there. The film detailed some of the delayed fear each of them experienced, post fire.
You can see Shane and family here Last year making my way through the area on the 3rd anniversary I ran into Shanes new house. I'd recognised it by the letterbox (above)
Children (and adults) might appear fine at the time but a lot of work will be required to sort out the issues that will follow.
Buy the film, Then The Wind Changed.

Black Saturday 3 years on
Third anniversary of Black Saturday today. So I made the familiar trip through Kangaroo Ground, Panton Hill to Strathewen. Spotted some hay bales in KG. Then a quick diversion to Panton Hill.
Here's a quick upload of some of the images taken today.
Everything that's crap seems to happen in February. This month also marks the Ash Wednesday anniversary.
Spent some time at Mooses place. Walked a bit of the fence line. The place is peaceful. Took a few shots. Laid some flowers. Then I went across the ridge-line to Gary and Jacintas place. There's nothing there anymore. No sign of anyone visiting unlike the first anniversary. Left some more flowers. I got a bit of a kick out of running into not one but two sets of Kangaroos getting there.
When I watched #thenthewindchanged I thought I'd seen this letterbox today? I switched back onto Bowden Spur road to go to Kinglake Central, Kinglake to pick up some pies for lunch. I finally finished the day at Dads in Kinglake West.
Got home, had some tea but of PT and watched, "Then the wind changed". I'd met a lot of these people. Moose would drag me into the community centre when things were being held. The last time I was talking to Shane he was telling me of a jump he'd scrounged out of a Globemaster with the paras. Dennis lives just up the hill from Moose. It was Dennis who cleared Mooses property of fallen timber. This is where we spent a lot of 2009/2010 clearing and burning timber. Watching Olly, I realise this is why I stick close to Moose and keep an eye on him and make sure he's on track.
I'm glad they made the film. Strathewen really was let down on the day.
