Love these old vw's - had an 1964 one myself many years ago - kept breaking down however as it is the happiest and friendliest car on the road , it was all good - Everybody smiled and waved at me when I drove it. I smiled and waved at the guy in his car too - will post another photo in colour in a couple of moments.
I ordered salty pancake with ham and cheese. This tasted similar to lasagne, but made with pancake, ham and cheese sauce. It tasted great.

I showed a photo of a Mallard Drake...with a full display of feathers. Here is his mate, preening. They had been in the lake doing what ducks do each spring. They then came up on the shore for some sun and relaxation.

Not all iceplants are created equal, but all have a root and stem system that is bound to trip you up if you're not careful. I think all ice plants are native to Africa or South Africa, and the diversity of colors and beauty of the daisy-like flowers draws me to them even though I have tripped and fallen a number of times - embarrassing, but not damaging - at the patched near the Carquinez Straits where I've done my shorebird, song sparrow, and sweat bee hunt for the past 16 years.
Malephora crocea is a species of flowering plant in the ice plant family known by the common name coppery mesemb and red ice plant. It is native to Africa (esp. South Africa) and it is grown in many other places as an ornamental plant and a groundcover. In California and Baja California this is an introduced species and often a noxious weed in coastal habitat such as beaches and bluffs. It is planted along highways in California and in Arizona it is utilized in landscaping for its low water needs and tolerance of sun. It has been recommended as a groundcover in areas prone to wildfire in southern California due to its low flammability.
It is during periods of our 100° plus weather that ice plant really shines. It's more than tolerant of heat and drought, but it has been known to produce a fire break when wildfires break out all over Calfiornia (like now).
For those wondering, we lost power for ten minutes and that was at 11 last night when it did no "harm." (Funny: at close to midnight, we received a phone call - we still have two hard wired phones - stating that the proposed brown-outs had been cancelled. Now who calls anyone at midnight to tell them that nothings going to happen! (Footnote's footnote: I could barely move yesterday with a literal painfully stiff neck. At 8 PM, all of a sudden, it just plain disappeared. Poof! At 3 AM, btw, it is now 85°. Maybe my neck untangled in the heat. We're not through yet as the hot weather will continue. September is, btw, one of our hottest months, and the ice plant thrives.)

Here's a photo of a female House finch on the stalk of a thalia. Some of the smaller birds seem shy about getting in the pond's stream while larger birds are there, so they hang out on the periphery and wait their turn.

I've always mistakenly assumed that the flehmen response was performed exclusively by males. Wrong!
According to ScienceDirect.com, while bulls demonstrate typical flehmen reactions when tending a cow, cows also exhibit flehmen toward one another, and it has been suggested that they use this behavior to stimulate the onset of estrus and synchronize the timing of copulation.
This photo marks the first time I've witnessed a female showing the flehmen response.
Additional notes:
That's not bull with extra legs...another young bull is standing behind him. The cow is by far the fattest one we observed during our three day with the bison herd. She looks like she skipped the nine-month + gestation period and is already about to give birth.
Lucky timing to get the bull bellowing and cow performing the flehmen at the same time.
