It is claimed that Death is the great leveller because Death makes everyone equal, because it does not spare anyone, not even the wealthy, famous, or talented. A visit to a cemetery such as Glasnevin shows that this is not really true. It is true that no one can avoid death but some people certainly can show off their wealth even after their death. They or their family can announce to the world just how wonderful they were when they ware alive but those with less money may end up sharing an unmarked plot with a number of strangers.
Since 1832 the bodies of the rich were interred in fancy private tombs while those of the poor went into unmarked common ground. It really surprised me to discover that up to 75% of those buried in the cemetery are in unmarked shared graves. Special areas were also created for victims of the many epidemics or outbreaks (of smallpox (1871-2), cholera (1865-66) or typhoid (1846-49)) that occasionally killed off large numbers of Dubliners in short periods of time. The last such outbreak, the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, saw 240 funerals at Glasnevin Cemetery over an eight-day period. The norm would have been twelve or thirteen.
Since the first burial a register has been maintained. The register includes the full name and address of the deceased, cause, date and location of death. The exact location of the grave is also included in the register but that does not mean that there will be anything to see. During a previous visit I came across an American family who on finding the grave on their great grand father were very upset by the fact that there was nothing to identify the grave or to indicate who was buried there. They got really annoyed with the official when he explained that it was a pauper’s grave and even more upset when they learned what that meant. The official eventually said to them I was not even born when your grandparents were buried so please don’t get annoyed with me.
Glasnevin Trust, which runs Glasnevin Cemetery, has operated a ‘pay later scheme’ for families who couldn’t afford graves at the time of burial. This would happen regularly, but in most cases people never repaid the money and the grave would be considered to be a pauper’s grave meaning that the grave was occupied but still owned by the trust. Today, these graves are known as “gone over graves” and are available for sale. Before any ‘gone over grave’ is sold, it is Glasnevin Trust’s policy to ensure that potential buyers are made fully aware of the grave’s history and the remains of the original occupants are not disturbed.
There were signs against the Olympics, Afghanistan, the seal hunt, the tarsands, the Gateway project - pretty much everything you could imagine.

On Equal Pay Day, let's remember that women still only make 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Share this if you support equal pay for equal work.
When it comes to preparing to have a family, a brown-headed nuthatch couple does not exhibit sex (or gender, as we'd see it)-specific behaviors; the male and female take turns hunting/foraging and excavating and cleaning their nesting cavity. Each does one job for a while, then they switch jobs until its time to change again, etc. At least, this is how it was for the three couples I've observed over the years.

One of seven installations during the event Lights in Alingsås 2016 – the theme of the year is Enlightenment. It is based on the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development agreed to by 193 world leaders. This installation is inspired by the goal "5 Gender equality".
Workshop head: Sabine De Schutter, Germany: "When I was a child, everything seemed equal. I thought I could do anything and everything. I´ve realized our world isn´t equal at all! I understand why they said not to play football or to go out after dark. My voice isn´t heard equally, I don´t have the same opportunities. I am a woman.
One day I wish to see equal chances and respect for all girls and women. That we feel safe whenever and wherever we go. I wish for a better world!"

being on break from school and the fact that work is basically dead right now would equal more time for photography...WRONG! We're currently moving (and let me tell you-I am BEYOND ready for that to be over.!) and life is just as busy as usual. Hence the reason it is currently 4:32am and I've yet to get a moment of shuteye....Just saying. Anyway, I have honestly not even touched my photos from the Photo Trek I took to PR Dec 8th-13. In fact, I have an ENTIRE 8 card I haven't even uploaded...Yeah. Photography fail. Anyway, I really liked this picture because these models were really stiff and trying impossibly hard to be Victoria's Secret Models/Playboy centerfolds and this was one of few candid moments! Which, of course, are my favorite! Hope everyone has a happy and SAFE New Years Eve/New Years!

‘Equal Temperance’ is a schizophonic composition for twenty-nine pianos. The composition provides the audience with an insight into the imagined sonification of the instruments regarding the environment they have been placed within. The project explores the differing tunings and acoustic environments of the pianos whilst additionally providing a creative documentation of the London soundscape.
The pianos used in this composition were part of the ‘Play me, I’m yours’ live art piece installed in London by Luke Jerram in July 2009. The material for the composition was recorded at each piano site over a ten-day period in collaboration with pianist, Keir Vine. Every location features in the composition and no external material was used.
‘Equal Temperance’ was diffused live over 8 speakers with Keir Vine performing on piano in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer, Southbank. This performance was part of the ‘Trouble Tune Tonic’ festival on July 31st 2009.
For more information about the piece and details of each piano please see this link - equaltemperance.blogspot.com
Have I a son who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid? One who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory?
Thats not for me to judge. Its for me to be there when he needs but I must also have the integrity to challenge when I feel it right - that, quite simply is the catch 22..
