Those bouquets have been sent by anonymous folks throughout the UNITED STATES to couples getting married! Inviduals who want to support the weddings and be part of the weddings have been calling up SAN FRANCISCO florists and asking that bouquets be delievered to ANY couple getting married! this has been going on all week. HUNDREDS of wedding bouquets have been sent! florists were so busy this week that they had to give some delieveries to other florists! you can see some of the beautiful bouquets in my SAN FRANCISCO wedding fotos a few pages back...

SAN FRANCISCO marriage applications and flowers...yesterday, i went to City Hall to witness couples getting married San Francisco style. It was really emotionally moving. Very different type of celebration compared to the GAY DAY PARADE. Officials want a constitutional challenge by suing the State of California over state laws that define marriage as between a man and a woman.

The lawsuit backs the core assertion by Mayor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, that marriage definitions in the state`s family code violate the State Constitution.

"The City and County of San Francisco is going on offense today in protecting the mayor`s action," City Attorney Dennis Herrera said. "Mayor Newsom took a bold step last week, and we fully agree with him that his position is justified and that the California Constitution provides that there should be equal opportunity under the law, and not just for straight people but for gay and lesbian people as well."

The city contends in the suit that the state family code violates both the Constitution`s equal protection clause and its due process clause by not giving equal opportunity to same-sex couples.

"The issue of whether state statutes prohibiting same-sex marriages violate constitutional protections is emerging as one of the great legal and civil rights issues of our day, and the question must be answered by our courts," Mr. Lockyer the State Attorney said.

"As a lifelong defender of civil rights, due process and equal protection for all," Mr. Lockyer said, "I do not personally support policies that give lesser legal rights and responsibilities to committed same-sex couples than those provided to heterosexual couples."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, said Mr. Lockyer "has assured me that he will vigorously defend the constitutionality of the law." The governor also said that the altered marriage licenses in San Francisco, which must be filed with the State Department of Health Services, "fail to meet legal standards."

The lawsuit, which was filed in San Francisco Superior Court, also named two conservative groups that last week sued to block the same-sex marriage policy. By including the groups in the lawsuit, the city wanted to make sure that any court decisions in those cases took into consideration the city`s constitutional arguments.

"What we are doing is trying to ensure that the constitutional issue is addressed," Mr. Herrera said. "It`s doing what any good lawyer would do and ensure that you are protecting your client`s position on all available fronts."

Mr. Newsom`s directive on Feb. 12 set off a blitz of gay weddings, numbering more than 3,000 by the close of business on Thursday. People waiting in line for a license applauded the city`s new legal move, but in a sign of the growing rancor surrounding the marriages, opponents began picketing outside City Hall.

"I think what we have done, is we have affirmed marriage in San Francisco," Mr. Newsom said. "We have affirmed it because we`re celebrating people coming together in their unions. I feel affirmed as a married man by what`s happened here in San Francisco."

MAKES ONE REALLY PROUD TO BE A SAN FRANCISCIAN!

SAN FRANCISCO...lines are all the way out the door and around the block. The religious right speak with the devils forked toungue...for they say that gays are promiscous, but then do not allow gays to get married. There is no FREEDOM for all until all have FREEDOM as in FREEDOM TO MARRY. (a right winger was seen with a sign that he wanted to marry a tree...unreal.)

MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM has approved the change in the wording of marriage licences to state `applicant` and not to be gender-specific. He has allowed gays and lesbians to legally marry in San Francisco and is willing to challenge the State that it can not discriminate against gays and lesbians, and thus, allowing them to marry! 2,636 couples have married this Valentine`s Day weekend, and more will continue!

MAYOR NEWSOM, who is straight, stated marriages will continue throughout the week because the anti-marriage forces failed to show Civil judges that these marriages are harmful. BUSHIT of course is having a cow over this and wants to use this issue to pull away focus from his unjust war and unjust policies.

The huge influx of people requesting marriage liciences were all handled by City workers who VOLUNTEERED their time! MAYOR NEWSOM has allowed CITY HALL to be open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday which is a National Holiday, Presidents Day. This is a sure slap in the face to President BUSHIT who opposes gay marriages as well as opposes anything SAN FRANCISCO stands for! BUSHIT just raised the rent of the HETCH HETCHY resevoir which is SAN FRANCISCO`s water source. BUSHIT raised the `rent` from $60,000/year to $300,000 MILLION A YEAR! BUSHIT knows that SAN FRANCISCO would never, ever support his war nor his evil policies which are aimed to benefit his political cronies and NOT the poor or working class US citizens!

Most people in work in the United Kingdom will receive a payslip either weekly or as in most cases today once a month, and normally find their wages paid directly into the bank, once the employer had deducted your tax and National Insurance (for overseas persons - NI is the part that pays for our free health care - it is free for us as we have already paid for it).

For many they will find around 20% - 30% removed in total from their pay packets.

It gets a little more complicated if you have two jobs, normally the second job will be taxed at the full rate, so even more money will be removed from this second pay packet.

In 1974 I took on a second job part time on Sundays and Bank Holidays at washing dishes at a cafe.

Lyons had years before been at its peak, now with the failure to bring in more up to date food, custom was slowly going down year by year, as their older customers died off, few people under 25 would ever even try them.

Food and atmosphere were more in line with the 1950s rather than the 1970s, if you wanted butter for a roll or toast, you were given a circular unwrapped piece on your plate, none of this modern pre-wrapped packaging.

The rate of pay was good for Sunday work etc at more than double my current rate per hour. At the time £2.40 per hour would have paid for 50 letter stamps, today it would work out at around £45 an hour, or as cigarettes ten packets of 20, today it would equal £100 per hour. Not bad for loading a selection of plates into a rack and pushing them into the dishwasher.

The only problem was that all pay matters were controlled by the Great Computer at Cadby Hall in London.

The firm had installed one of the first business computers in Britain and was named Leo. (Years before "Deep Thought" came along).

The only problem was that someone did not have the time to programme LEO with my National Insurance Number.

The result was that my entire pay form my first few weeks were taken as tax. I did have the chance the following year to claim it back, but as I had left Lyons, I don't think the amount was ever credited to my tax account.

At times, the worst letters to see on a British pay slip are 0T, this might not mean Over Time but the dreaded tax letters that mean: You've started a new job and don't have form P45 or haven't provided your employer with relevant information before your first pay day.

D0, is slightly better that only takes 40% out of your pay packet.

One of the reasons that many decide they are better off not working and take benefits from the State.

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Hundreds of people gathered at the Camp Arifjan theater Jan. 20 for a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday Celebration hosted by Army Support Group Kuwait and the equal opportunity sections from the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and the 1st Theater Sustainment Command.

The ceremony included the singing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" by Army Spc. Rhonda N. Bush from the 310th Human Resources Sustainment Center, an invocation by Army Chaplain (Capt.) Abdiel F. Fuentesgarza with the 19th Engineer Battalion, and a reading of President Barack Obama's "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Proclamation" by Army Staff Sgt. Dustin C. Delong with the 371st Sustainment Brigade. The attendees also watched the original broadcast of King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Army Chaplain (Maj.) Henry McCaskill, Jr., the operations chaplain (forward) for the 1st TSC, accepted the 143d ESC’s invitation to be the ceremony's guest speaker. McCaskill flew from Afghanistan to speak about his experience growing up in Alabama during the 1960s. McCaskill's father, Henry McCaskill, Sr., helped organize many of the rallies, marches and meetings associated with King's civil rights movement.

“My father took me to many of the meetings that covered topics like voting rights and access to civic services,” said McCaskill. “I was eight years old when all this happened in 1965, but I can still clearly recall the energy from those meetings . . . I’ll never forget the singing, shouting and praying.”

McCaskill gave a detailed narrative about the challenges his father faced to include threats to burn down his home and harm his family.

“I remember my father receiving death threats over the phone,” said McCaskill. “One night he confronted and chased off a mob wanting to burn our house down. That was life for us in Hale County, [Alabama], in 1965, though the African American community had another name for it.”

The chaplain also expressed his respect for King as a proponent for love, equality and non-violence, and the he urged his audience to mimic those qualities in their lives.

“Dr. King said that, ‘love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend,’” said McCaskill. “Even in the midst of hate and violence, King never strayed from that key message.”

At the ceremony's conclusion, Army Lt. Col. Andrew K. Tapscott, the deputy commanding officer for Area Support Group-Kuwait, presented the ceremony's chief organizers and participants with certificates of appreciation.

1 almond (1.2 g)

1 oz (23 whole kernels) (28.35 g)

1 cup, sliced (92 g)

1 cup, ground (95 g)

1 cup, slivered (108 g)

1 cup, whole (143 g)

(1 ounce = 28.3495 grams).

* I weighed 1 cup of almonds & found that it equals 4 ounces. The suggested serving size is one ounce which equals approx:

1.35 mg of iron per one ounce serving(2.7 mg of iron are in 1/2 cup of almonds).

Overview:

Walnuts and almonds are both good choices for healthy snacks, as they provide healthy fats, protein and minerals. The nutritional value of each nut varies, however, and you may wish to choose one over the other based on your nutrition needs. Walnuts, although, higher in fat, are slightly higher in some minerals. Almonds, on the other hand, are higher in protein, fiber and vitamin E.

Calories:

A 1 oz. serving of walnuts contains more than 20 calories more than 1 oz. of almonds, mostly because they contain a higher percentage of fat. One serving of almonds contains 163 calories, which are made up of approximately 15 percent protein, 72 percent fat and 13 percent carbohydrates. One serving of walnuts contains 185 calories, which are made up of approximately 9 percent protein, 84 percent fat and 7 percent carbohydrates.

Protein:

One serving of almonds contains 6 g of protein, which is 13 percent of the recommended amount for women and 11 percent for men. Walnuts are lower in protein, with only 4.3 g of protein, which is 9 percent for women and 8 percent for men. Walnuts and almonds are not complete proteins, as they do not contain all nine of the essential amino acids, which are those amino acids that must be obtained through food because they are not produced by your body.

Fat:

Walnuts are higher in fat than almonds, with 18.5 g per serving as opposed to 14 g per serving. However, the fat in both types of nuts is primarily polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which do not raise cholesterol like saturated fat does. Both types of nuts are low in saturated fat, with one serving of walnuts containing 1.7 g and one serving of almonds containing 1.1 g.

Carbohydrates:

Both almonds and walnuts are low in carbohydrates, with 6.1 g and 3.9 g, respectively. Almonds, however, contain almost twice as much fiber as walnuts, with 3.5 g per serving as opposed to 1.9 g per serving. Most adults need approximately 28 g of fiber per day. The fiber in nuts is soluble fiber, which can help lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Vitamins and Minerals:

Walnuts and almonds are both high in copper and manganese, but walnuts are slightly higher in both minerals. One serving of walnuts provides 50 percent of the recommended amount of copper and one serving of almonds provides 31 percent. One serving of walnuts provides 54 percent of the recommended amount of manganese for women and 42 percent for men while one serving of almonds provides 36 percent for women and 28 percent for men. Almonds are much higher in vitamin E than almonds. One serving of almonds supplies 50 percent of the recommended amount, while one serving of walnuts supplies only 1 percent.

Demonstration am Pariser Platz vor dem Brandenburger Tor anlässlich des Equal Pay Day am 21.3.2014

The boy in red is perhaps the leader of this troupe of Bramhin boys performing their morning rituals.

At the UN General Assembly in New York, champions of equal pay took centre stage, putting forth a clarion call to end the global gender pay gap that stands at 23 per cent. The event launched the high-profile Equal Pay Platform of Champions, a diverse group of advocates to amplify and galvanize mobilization—as part of a broader ILO-UN Women Global Equal Pay Coalition—calling for equal pay for work of equal value. The event at the UN was hosted by UN Women in partnership with ILO, and co-sponsored by the Missions of Iceland, South Africa and Switzerland, coinciding with the opening day of the 61st Commission on the Status of Women, the largest inter-governmental forum on women’s rights and gender equality, which is focusing this year on the theme of “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work”.

The Platform of Champions builds momentum to address the issue of pay inequality, which affects women and girls in every country in the world. It brings together Oscar Award-winning American actress Patricia Arquette, two-time Olympic gold medalist and soccer superstar Abby Wambach, along with leaders from trade unions, civil society, government and private sector, film makers and gender equality advocates.

A recruiting poster for the London General Omnibus Company which was seeking women conductors (clippies) due to the shortage of men in the midst of World War I. The first such female conductor, a Mrs G Duncan, started work for the Thomas Tilling Company in 1915.

The LGOC, then the largest omnibus company in the city, went on to employ some 4,600 female clippies (so-called because of the ticket-clipping machines they used) during the war. Eventually some 18,000 women were employed by transport companies in London alone in a variety of roles; however, men generally received better pay and conditions. Equal pay was never achieved, but after a strike, women in transport companies nationally did get the war bonus that men were already receiving.

At the end of the war, many women were forced out of their jobs, regardless of how well they had performed them, to make way for men returning from the armed forces. The whole process was repeated in the Second World War when some 20,000 women worked for transport companies in London alone, but again many lost those jobs to men returning from military service.

The first female bus driver in London did not appear until 1974!

On the opening week of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, an inter-generational conversation convened by UN Women, placed youth leadership at the centre of its new campaign, Generation Equality: Realizing women’s rights for an equal future.

The multigenerational campaign to mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, demands a sustainable future where women and girls have equal rights and opportunities. The side event on 16 September examined what’s needed and what’s working to promote the leadership of young women within the United Nations.

This 1959 advertisement shows the equal largest order for single deckers ever from Edinburgh Corporation. In 1959 and 1960 Edinburgh bought 50-strong batches of Tiger Cubs, Easily producing the largest fleet of the Pneumocyclic PSUC1/3 variant. Edinburgh’s General Manager and Leyland jointly patented a safety feature in which the door open control was incorporated in a sixth position in the gate for the gearbox, and interlocked with the handbrake assuring the bus could only have the door open whilst static and out of gear. The 1959 batch had 44 seats with a single at the front on the nearside, the 1960 batch sat 47, with three plus two seating rows toward the rear. Although these Tiger Cubs had an advanced specification, Edinburgh took Titans with open rear entrances and also vacuum brakes in following years, and took its last manual buses in the 1970s.
