An epic trip - 6-hours, 30-miles from Ouray to Lake City, Colorado - with rough rocky patches, switchbacks, shelf roads, and sweeping vistas all the way, reaching almost 13,000 feet at the summit. A Jeep Badge of Honor trail for good reason.

From TrailsOffroad.com: In the late 1800’s, miners started digging for gold, silver, lead and other ore in the San Juan Mountains. They needed a way to get people and the ore out to the nearby towns. Those roads left by the long-abandoned mines are now some of the most famous off-road trails in the books. Engineer Pass, a 30-mile trail, is one of them and is part of a trail now known as the Alpine Loop.

There are multiple mine ruins to view and explore the grounds of along the way including the Hard Tack Mine and the Michael Breen Mine.

Mile after mile provides new and more amazing views of Colorado and the San Juan mountains. Oh Point and the official summit have breath-taking panoramas of the mountains.

This trail goes well above the timberline at just over 12,900’. With the altitude comes stunning views of the mountains to the north including the Uncompahgre, Coxcomb, Wetterhorn and Wildhorse mountain peaks. The view is so expansive at Oh Point that on a very clear day, you might be able to see all the way to Utah if you turn your eyes to the west.

Royal Engineers Depot -

On wartime and later aerial photographs, numerous buildings and other structures are visible at the northern extent of the site. Little remains other than the foundations and terraces upon which the buildings were situated, and analysis of the area was hampered by thick vegetation and rubble. These structures appear to be the remains of a Royal Engineers Depot, an interpretation supported by the nearby Defensive Electric Light (DEL) which was converted to a Royal Engineers workshop.

Building terraces, platforms and building foundations -

TM 2619 3197 - Two terraced platforms, their slopes 2ft 7in and 3ft 7in high, are the bases for structures now dismantled. The terraces are at least 72ft 2in long and 16ft 4in wide.

TM 2622 3197 - A concrete platform at least 22ft 3in long and 11ft 1in wide with a narrow ramp leading up to what was presumably the doorway, though all traces of this have disappeared.

TM 2623 3197 - Beneath heavy vegetation, and therefore not investigated in detail, were the remains of what appear to be wall footings.

The park, a public garden, was created through Baron Haussmann's development of Paris; a former quarry was developed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand (1817-91), horticulturist Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps (1824-73), and architect Gabriel Davioud (1824-81). Work was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III in 1860, and opened for the Universal Exhibition in 1867.
