The Red Hats of the 823rd Red Horse Squadron spread out the newly poured asphalt at the Combat Shield compound at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., June 20. The two-month paving project by the Hulburt Field Airmen changed the layout of the roads in and out of the compound to allow for large haulers to maneuver and exit with ease. Today 2D Engineer Brigade inactivated for the third time since its inception in 1943.
The ceremony was attended by nonagenarian Jack Reed and his friend Edwin Leard III. Reed served in 542d Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment (EB&SR), 2D Engineer Special Brigade (ESB) in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Leard's grandfather, Edwin Leard I, served in the 532d EB&SR, 2D ESB and fought and died in the Pacific during WWII. They were both presented brigade coins by Col. Pete Andrysiak and Command Sgt. Maj. Brad Houston, the command team of 2D Engineer Brigade. Reed was also presented a brigade flag with an inscription reading "To Mr. Jack Reed. For your continued dedication to the 2D Engineer Brigade and your WWII service in 2D Engineer Special Brigade. You are the bridge to our legacy."
Maj. Gen. Mike Shields, commander of U.S. Army Alaska (USARAK), presented awards for the command team and their wives. Col. Andrysiak and Command Sgt. Maj. Houston were both presented Legion of Merit Medals. Their wives, Casey Andrysiak and Kim Houston, were both presented Outstanding Civilian Service Awards for their efforts taking care of the Soldiers and Families of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) community.
Col. Thomas Roth, USARAK chief of staff and the senior Army Engineer on JBER, presented the Essayons Award to Mrs. Andrysiak for her contributions to the Engineer Regiment. Roth also presented Silver de Fleury Medals to Col. Andrysiak and Command Sgt. Maj. Houston.
Finally, Mr. Shawn Rall of the Alaska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), presented the ESGR's Seven Seals Award to Col. Andrysiak and Command Sgt. Maj. Houston for the care and support they gave to Guard and Reserve Soldiers and Sailors during the brigade's recent deployment to Afghanistan.

Teens at the Avondale Regional Branch Library pick up some engineering skills and answer some of these questions with the help of their engineering mentors during this engaging program. This program is brought to the library in partnership with the UAB School of Engineering and is generously funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
