In conjunction with the conversion ceremony, the 174th CEC celebrated their 100th year with the South Carolina Army National Guard. The unit assembled and was federally recognized on October 16th, 1924, serving in both World War II in 1944 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. I didn't know train engineers really wore those hats. I thought they were just for little kids' Halloween costumes, like a chef's hat for a chef, or a helmet for a motorcyclist.
