For background, I am a military engineer and the engineer castle is a commonly used symbol of military engineers. The castle used in the US is derived from the US Army Corps of Engineers and it has since proliferated into other branches and nations’ engineer corps. On of the more interesting versions I have seen is a Japanese-style pagoda engineer castle used by a Japanese engineer unit.

I have been thinking about how to build a worthy version of the engineer castle out of LEGO for a few years, and then one day I saw a build using cheese wedges turned vertically on a stud-faced brick combined with a hinge plate to create 45°-angled wall corners. This is when I had a “no kidding” moment and my idea finally evolved into something interesting. However, I ended up moving again and the idea was shelved for a few more years until last March. That is when I finally downloaded Stud.io and started exploring its capabilities, as I had only used LDD previously. It was not long before I imported my castle files, and over the next two weeks I started crafting the design, building small section mockups to test the building techniques. I luckily had about half of the parts on hand, but I put off buying the rest of the parts until this past December; they all arrived in January, and completed the build in early February. One of my favorite details is the inclusion of the various engineer tools and capabilities represented on the back side.

As a LEGO hobbyist and as a combat engineer, I am excited about the build as a whole and being able to see a digital design transition into actual bricks was extremely satisfying, and I of course had a great time building this. Enjoy.

The park, a public garden, was created through Baron Haussmann's development of Paris; a former quarry was developed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand (1817-91), horticulturist Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps (1824-73), and architect Gabriel Davioud (1824-81). Work was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III in 1860, and opened for the Universal Exhibition in 1867.

Northern class operated by AT & SF Railroad and made by the Baldwin Locomotive Company in 1944. Because of wartime restrictions some of the parts were heavier to offset the lack of high-tensile alloys. As a result of the substitutions, these locomotives became the heaviest passenger locomotives ever built. Retired in 1959. [credit]
