Chalandamarz
It is at the start of March, when the evil spirits of winter are driven away, that Chalandamarz is celebrated in the Engadin. The old custom of Chalandamarz (from the Latin Calandae martius, the first day in March) can be found in different forms in all villages of the Engadin: with the loud ringing of bells winter is said to be driven away to make place for Spring. Thanks to the book “Schellen-Ursli” by SELINA CHÖNZ, with its impressive drawings by ALOIS CARIGET, the way in which the custom has evolved in Guarda has become widely known…
…Children derive the greatest joy from the festival, where they take part in the big procession, carrying large bells through the village. Making a huge racket they hope to finally kill off the harsh winter.
But what is to be done if the bell needed for the festival is missing?
In the story a lad by the name of Uorsin had precisely this problem more than fifty years ago. The picturebook tells of him resolving to go up to his parents’ mountain cabin to fetch a bell. In his haste, however, he forgets how far and dangerous the route over the snowy meadows and perilous paths is. After the strains of the hike and fearful of the dark night he nods off in the cabin. He sleeps the whole night long in the straw bed, on the bell he has found, while his parents, relatives and friends, indeed the whole village, search for the young runaway. On the following day the lad comes back down to the valley beaming at his magnificent find. His relieved mother greats him lovingly.

The trail is set out so that those with children can complete it in stages. At the individual stations of the trail there are signs with pictures and texts from the “Schellen Ursli” picture book by Alois Carigiet and Selina Chönz. On the back of the signs you will find photos of flowers in the nearby surroundings, taken from Edmond Perret-Gentil’s book Flora of the Engadin Tuoi Valley. Descriptions of the route can be obtained at the Guarda Tourist Office

Wenn versehentlich das Pyjama aus dem Fenster auf das Dach der Hotelküche fällt. Vielleicht hätte ein anderer Hotelier einen Mitarbeiter geschickt statt dem Gast den Weg auf das Dach zu erklären.
