DM&IR 193 and 316 have cut off a healthy cut of DEEX coal hoppers that had been on the NSSR for winter storage. The BNSF burners on the left will take them back to the PRB for more black diamonds. The Canadian geese proved to be a nice prop.

Not a sight you see very often on the Bakerloo line.
Opened in 1906 the Bakerloo line seems to have the most twists and turns of all the undergrounds lines!

The JFK memorial - a cenotaph - or "empty tomb", a few blocks from where Kennedy was shot in Dallas. Some people seem disappointed when they walk up to it - basically it's like walking into a big empty concrete box without a lid. In the middle is a simple marble stone, only about 2 feet high, with his name engraved on it. To me the structure perfectly catches the sense of emptiness, futility and loss that you get from his death.
We always think we have more time.
My father-in-law passed away suddenly yesterday. A state trooper called the school looking for my husband and asked that he drive to one of the local hospitals.
Somehow, we knew.
And yet, it is still impossible. Despite his congestive heart failure. Despite his failing health over the past several years. Despite that deep-rooted understanding that we are all mortal.
It is still impossible. How can someone so much larger than life be gone?
We've spent the last two days at his house. His leather chair sits empty. The colors seem dull and the air seems to have been sucked from the room. There are moments of remembrance that bring us laughter, and for a moment, he's there with us. And minutes later, the breath catches in my throat and reality falls heavily into my heart.
Every ring of the phone is the potential heartbreak of telling someone who somehow didn't know. Hugs bring comfort and a paradoxical shower of renewed grief...for those hugs have a different meaning right now. Food trays come to the door and we burst into tears.
I have been through sorrow and loss. It doesn't get easier. Nothing about this is easy.

I have been meaning to get out and work with my Busch Pressman camera and finally did just that yesterday. I still have so much to learn. The entire process is both laborious and cathartic in some way. I went to Wengerlawn, a tiny crossroad village north of Brookville where I had found an abandoned farmhouse earlier this year. I was expecting the owner to run me off (from next door) but I never saw them. Maybe this excursion was meant to be.
Processing the film last night was also an interesting experience, working with all the sheets of film in open tanks. I wish I could print these on actual silver based paper to see what they really look like. I also think the next time I'll shoot slower film. HP5+ is great film, no doubt. Considering I used the original Wollensak lens for these I'm quite happy. I have a Symmar-S as well but it's even longer than the stock lens. I'm a wide angle shooter if I can for landscapes. Maybe time to see what I can afford.
