Empty coffee bottles over a wooden table.

Shops in Geneva are closed on Sunday, and the streets are empty. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon, and I was trying to capture the emptiness and the overcast mood in this picture.

Nha Trang, Vietnam, 1997 - Leica M4, Summilux 35, Kodak Tri-X

Hard to explain the true reasons why I chose this night capture for illustrating my artbook Vietnamese We - Người Việt Nam chúng tôi - Nous autres Vietnamiens. Under a grudging monsoon rain I probably felt close to these guys as a roving photographer and loved their empty look outside a hash house at midnight.

Just back from a short trip to Edinburgh.

On the flight back to Amsterdam (KL1290 @ 19:30), the plane was nearly empty - 9 passengers, and 5 crew - this was one of KLMs Boeing 737-300s, which they have configured for 127 passengers.

It was a bit of a party flight too - most people moved to the forward cabin, and the cabin crew were handing out as many drinks as they could :-)

And with a virtually empty plane (and light on fuel), the take off was ultra quick - it's only a 60 minute flight anyhow.

If you really like cabin views, take a look here - my most viewed photo !

One of a series of photos by Nick Thompson of a set of mosaic panels in the church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. The panels are high up and not well lit. A tip my hat to the Nick for what he achieved. See the full set here: www.flickr.com/photos/pelegrino/sets/72157624125438256/wi...

An Empty Bench at Hampton Court Palace

Central Park, usually teeming with people, was empty today because of the cold. I stopped in the middle of a street that's usually a challenge to cross, with all the runners, bikers, horses and walkers, and took this picture. I had plenty of time.

Seattle Central Library, 1st floor. Thinking of those who had been lost in a bombing halfway round the world and the empty places their families were looking at, too.

From a recent night shoot around MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)

Unfortunately MIMA wasn't illuminated but at one end of the building is this little cafe

For me, the scene was a little wistful; this softly lit little cafe waiting through the night for its pupose to begin with the coming day. I tried to capture this mood by emphasing the soft lighting and accentuating the contrast of the green seating with the orange cast from the lights.

This is for my friend Christopher's Empty Bowl Challenge!

Together, we can fill an empty bowl.

Many of us have spare change lying around the house.

So, I, Diana Chao, pledge to complete the Empty Bowl Challenge by taking and posting a picture with an empty bowl, filling that bowl with spare change, and contributing that amount or more to help a family experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia and around the world.

Every year, the Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network (PIHN) hosts an event called the Empty Bowl Dinner that raises awareness about family hunger and homelessness. Every guest leaves with an empty hand-made bowl as a reminder that every night hundreds of families go hungry in the City of Philadelphia.

Learn more and donate at philashelter.org/index.php/how-to-help/donate/

Every donation helps a family experiencing homelessness. #emptybowlchallenge #PIHN

Also, if you have any stories of how you have been affected by the Empty Bowl Dinner, share it too!

//

To me, I see the light skidding across the bowl a symbol of hope and imminent brightness. You can just take a regular selfie, but hey, why not make some art in the process of helping others out?
