By 2000 most freights over the S&C were in the hands of the Class 66's. and on this day of West Coast diversions there was two EWS 66 hauled Gypsum trains. Here the first one that went up in the morning is seen returning south with its empties. 66073 is seen at 1428 at Blea Moor with its working 6E13, 1332 Kirkby Thore - Knottingley. ( thanks to Adrian for the correct working and headcode )
The southern portal of Blea Moor tunnel can be seen in the background.

Last night I had insomnia and didn't sleep a wink. I'm guessing this was partly due to the two cups of coffee I had drank to help stay awake at a business seminar, plus the scoop of vanilla ice cream I shouldn't have had right before getting into bed.
In any case, I had a math exam at 8am this morning, and 90 minutes into the 2-hour exam I started to loose my focus and literally couldn't remember what 4 x 7 is. I had to first calculate 4 x 6 and then add another 4 to get 4 x 7.
I planned this photo shoot a week in advance as I was interested in getting a cool shot of some starfish, and low tide would coincide with sunset. However, I wandered the beach for nearly an hour and couldn't find any starfish appropriately perched on the top of rocks.
I eventually settled on this composition, which required standing in seawater up to my thighs. My rubber boots were filled with water and my jeans were soaked, but I "had" to do it to get close enough to the rock in foreground. When I saw larger waves approaching I screamed for joy like a little kid because I knew the larger waves would crash and give me some cool water action.
Afterwards I retreated out of the water and sat on a rock to empty the water from my boots. I raised my right leg just enough so the water would pour out of my boot without even needing to remove the boot. I then raised my left leg and proceeded to empty the seawater down the back of my leg, thoroughly soaking the seat of my pants. I think that is something only a man is dumb enough to do. After hiking back to my car I removed my wet jeans and drove home in my underwear.
I actually had a few decent captures to choose from, but ultimately chose this one because it has the biggest and baddest water action, and also has the best color in the clouds. This photo is a single exposure taken with a Lee 0.9H grad ND filter.
Auckland, New Zealand. Just right after dinner and the rain stopped, it was remarkable to find this area empty. Returned the next night with my Sony camera, it was so crowded and virtually impossible to take a reasonable picture ...

All the other squirrels have been content to forage for seeds on the ground under the feeder, but not this one. Even though the feeder is almost empty, this squirrel is determined to get into it.

I'm early this week for Illustration Friday. The theme is "empty", and this is what got into my head and wouldn't go away. Empty heart.
Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
Isaiah 24:1 King James Version
When I shot this image I felt very sad for the poor man....
and I felt the deep feeling of emptiness that reflects his life...
All he had is What you can see in the picture....
No friends no relatives nothing...

My Website:
M347's hallmark traffic as of late has been empty center beam flatcars en masse at the back of the train. Like the surrounding forest, there isn't much to see.
Not that I have nothing else to upload, quite on the contrary.. Found this old shot when I looked at pictures I would like to include for my website. Oh yeah, the day is coming! ;)
Cleaner than it's ever been! Jesse moved out yesterday! Better move some stuff in there before he comes back!

A recent trip to Nicaragua left me with a bundle of good photos, good times and new friends. Check out the story at danielfranksphotography.com
Two days ago I bought the Singh-Ray Vari ND filter and that got me thinking about all the locations where I could shoot some interesting long-exposure photographs. That, in turn brought me to this older image I took a few months ago from the top of Burj Khalifa. I posted a very similar shot here, but this one is later in the evening and obviously with a much longer exposure. I love how it makes the streets look almost empty and I am really thinking about trying to take a similar photograph during day-time with my new filter. At its maximum the filter can add 8 stops to an image so that should allow me to get a fairly long exposure during the late afternoon hours.
Now for something not so technical… Like I said in my previous post one of my shots from Salalah was on the cover of TimeOut Dubai and in case you wanted to see it I’ve posted it on the Facebook page.

After taking in the Strawberry Fest train show in Waupaca, my friend Rich and I decided to check out the train action west of Waupaca. This empty oil train was caught at Larson Rd. You can see Highway 49 passing overhead in the background.
A lonely chair in an empty courtyard at Georgetown University.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow'
And tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
(The ghosts of those who died on the barricade appear)
That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Phantom faces at the window.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.
(The ghosts fade away)
Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more.
