Recently opted to switch over to an iPhone 5S after encountering some persistent trouble with my HTC One. The camera on this phone is quite something, and I was surprised how clean night shots come out (viewed as a whole, not pixel peeping). OIS (on iOS, hah) would be nice, but with such a small focal length it could be far worse. Part of this though is also that I'm just getting used to shooting at higher ISOs.

Empty Bowls, an annual fundraiser for Clay and Cherokee County food banks, took place March 23 at the Olive Dame Campbell Dining Hall. The event raised money to help those in need in our community.

Attendees selected their favorite bowl from hundreds of colorful ceramic bowls made by local potters. Diners also enjoyed a hearty meal in the Dining Hall, enhanced by good company and live music. Special thanks go to Mike Lalone, our Resident Potter, for organizing this event. We also appreciate the efforts of local potters and other volunteers who helped make Empty Bowls 2013 a successful event.

Last night I had insomnia and didn't sleep a wink. I'm guessing this was partly due to the two cups of coffee I had drank to help stay awake at a business seminar, plus the scoop of vanilla ice cream I shouldn't have had right before getting into bed.

In any case, I had a math exam at 8am this morning, and 90 minutes into the 2-hour exam I started to loose my focus and literally couldn't remember what 4 x 7 is. I had to first calculate 4 x 6 and then add another 4 to get 4 x 7.

I planned this photo shoot a week in advance as I was interested in getting a cool shot of some starfish, and low tide would coincide with sunset. However, I wandered the beach for nearly an hour and couldn't find any starfish appropriately perched on the top of rocks.

I eventually settled on this composition, which required standing in seawater up to my thighs. My rubber boots were filled with water and my jeans were soaked, but I "had" to do it to get close enough to the rock in foreground. When I saw larger waves approaching I screamed for joy like a little kid because I knew the larger waves would crash and give me some cool water action.

Afterwards I retreated out of the water and sat on a rock to empty the water from my boots. I raised my right leg just enough so the water would pour out of my boot without even needing to remove the boot. I then raised my left leg and proceeded to empty the seawater down the back of my leg, thoroughly soaking the seat of my pants. I think that is something only a man is dumb enough to do. After hiking back to my car I removed my wet jeans and drove home in my underwear.

I actually had a few decent captures to choose from, but ultimately chose this one because it has the biggest and baddest water action, and also has the best color in the clouds. This photo is a single exposure taken with a Lee 0.9H grad ND filter.

Empty medicine bottles left, years ago, on the window sill of the pharmacy at the abandoned 'Preston Castle' in Ione, California. It is said that paranormal activity runs rampant in this old abandoned building, once a notorious reform school housing juvenile offenders and abandoned boys in northern California.

She cycles with purpose, the sun on her face and an empty carriage ahead – perhaps on her way to collect life’s most precious cargo. There’s a quiet poetry in the in-between: the pause before presence, the space waiting to be filled.

Beyond the edge of the world there’s a space where emptiness and substance neatly overlap, where past and future form a continuous, endless loop.
